Natural and safe dishwashing detergents
The trend for eco-friendly products dictates its own rules. Manufacturers, adapting to new trends, are increasingly trying to sell consumers conventional products as eco-friendly. Take dishwashing detergents, for example: their formulas are generally similar, but they are produced under different brands and have different descriptions and characteristics.
So it turns out that one manufacturer claims the chemical composition is environmentally friendly, while another, reputable manufacturer, makes no such claim. So, as consumers, we have to carefully examine the ingredients of the product we buy and understand what constitutes a truly safe product.
What should a safe dishwasher detergent be like?
The range of organic dishwasher detergents is constantly growing, but how can you tell if a product is natural and safe? First of all, pay attention to the ingredients; it should be free of phosphates, fragrances, and chlorine. The packaging of such a product must bear one of the certification marks, for example, ECO GARANTIE or ECO Control. Products bearing the ECO GARANTIE label meet the following requirements:
- mineral and natural raw materials used in the production of products are grown only with natural fertilizers;
- Detergents are not tested on animals;
- the composition of the product is non-toxic and easily decomposes in nature;
- the products do not contain petroleum products;
- The products are not irradiated for disinfection.
The requirements for products bearing the ECO Control label are slightly different from the previous ones:
- does not contain any raw materials of animal origin;
- do not contain preservatives;
- washing products undergo dermatological tests confirming the safety of the product;
- production is carried out only using energy-saving technologies.

Now let's review brands of eco-friendly dishwashing detergents that are suitable for dishwashers.
Ecodoo products
Ecodoo produces dishwasher salt and tablets. These products are manufactured in France.
Ecodoo special salt is made of 100% sodium chloride, or rock salt, which is evaporated in the sun. It does not contain preservatives, fragrances, chlorine or phosphates. It effectively combats stains on dishes and limescale deposits on dishwasher parts. Available in 2.5 kg packages, it is ECOCERT certified and costs an average of $9.
Ecodoo tablets are biodegradable and phosphate- and chlorine-free. These tablets contain ingredients such as polycarboxylates, sodium carbonate, oxygenated bleach, sodium silicate, less than 5% surfactants, enzymes, and lemon oil. This formula effectively removes grease from dishes, leaving them sparkling and free of water stains after drying. A 30-tablet pack costs approximately $10.
ECODOO Gel is a concentrated dishwashing detergent based on essential oils. 10 ml is enough for one wash cycle.
ECODOO Rinse Aid is a concentrated product for brightening dishes. It contains water, citric acid, vegetable ethyl alcohol, and vegetable glycerin.

- EcoWare rinse aid is suitable for all dishwashers and contains water, alcohol, citric acid, and glucoside.
- Salt from this manufacturer is classified as a professional product and is not recommended for home use.
- Ecover detergent is suitable for semi-professional and professional dishwashers. Its composition is also safe for humans and does not contain any harmful substances.
Klar products
Klar products are manufactured in Germany and are considered environmentally friendly, as confirmed by the Ecogarantie certificate.
Available for sale:
- Powder. It's made from environmentally friendly ingredients and is phosphate- and chlorine-free. It removes tea and coffee stains, and for stubborn stains, you can enhance its effectiveness by adding Clar bleach.
- Tablets. Contain citric acid, succinic acid, baking soda, sodium silicate, bleach, alizarin oil, and enzymes. These tablets are effective at removing tea stains, dried-on food and grease, while being gentle on dishes. They can be used at any temperature.
- Rinse aid is an environmentally friendly, concentrated, hypoallergenic product that adds shine to dishes. It consists of water, lactic and citric acids, glucose, and alcohol. Suitable for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.
- Clar salt is highly purified and dermatologically tested for allergies. It is completely safe for humans.
Almawin Bio products
Almawin Bio tablets and powder are another German-made dishwasher detergent. These products are also certified and feature a safe and biodegradable formula. Both the powder and tablets effectively remove stains, including tea and coffee stains, and have no unpleasant chemical odor. When using powder, you must also use Almawin rinse aid and salt, which will make the dishes shine and sparkle. As for the tablets, they contain a substance that gives shine to dishes.
Bio Mio products
Bio Mio products are manufactured in Denmark and are Certified Organic. For example, Bio Mio's natural dishwashing liquid tablets contain essential oil, which provides excellent disinfection. They also contain cotton extract, which has absorbent properties, ensuring effective cleaning and eliminating unpleasant odors. Bio Mio tablets dissolve easily in all wash cycles and are suitable for all types of dishes, including delicate ones. They are versatile, requiring no salt or rinse aid.

Sodasan tablets remove dirt, grease, and coffee stains, but to achieve shine, you need to use rinse aid in conjunction with the tablets. This brand of salt is also available in tablet form.
This is just a small selection of products available on the household cleaning market. Other names to mention include Almacabio, Sonett, Trio-Bio, Attitude, Etamine du Lys, and others.
