Length and diameter of the washing machine drain hose

drain hose dimensionsA simple washing machine component like the drain hose is often the wrong length. Users are forced to find another hose or extend the factory-installed one. To do this, you need to know its dimensions, not only the permissible length but also the diameter of the washing machine drain hose. Let's review various hoses and discuss how to extend them.

What are the different sizes of hoses?

All hoses for draining waste water from a washing machine or dishwasher can be divided into three groups:

  1. conventional, having a fixed length from 1 to 5 meters;
  2. The hose in the coil is long, sold by the meter, and divided into modules for easy cutting. This means it can be cut to any desired length. However, for connecting to a washing machine, the drain hose length should be limited, as a long hose places additional strain on the pump.

  3. Telescopic hose – a corrugated tube which has a length of 0.6 m when compressed and 2 m when extended. The disadvantages of this hose are that it is more prone to clogging, vibrates more when draining, and can tear if stretched sharply.

Drainage hoses are made of gray polypropylene, essentially plastic. Special elastic rubber fittings are attached to the ends of the hoses. When referring to the hose diameter, we mean the internal diameter of the fittings. Hoses can be equipped with fittings of the following sizes:

  • both fittings are 19 mm;
  • one fitting is 19 mm, the other is 22 mm;
  • both fittings are 22 mm.

It is extremely rare to find a hose with a fitting for connecting to a pump with a diameter of 29 mm in washing machines, for example, on older Indesit machines.

Hoses overview

TSG hoses are Italian-made gray accessories rated for a working pressure of 5 bar. They are sold in various lengths, which is reflected in the price. The main sizes are: 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 2.5 m, 3 m, 3.5 m, 4 m, and 5 m. Prices range from $0.90 to $2.35. All these hoses have an internal fitting diameter of 19 x 22 mm.

TuboFlex hoses are from a Russian manufacturer, rated for a working pressure of 2 bar. They are made of polypropylene and come in lengths ranging from 1 to 5 meters. The manufacturer recommends them for washing machines of the following brands: Candy, Beko, LG, Indesit, and Atlant. The approximate price for a 3.5-meter accessory is $1.90.

The Helfer hose is a washing machine hose made in Russia. It has an impressive operating pressure of 10 bar and can withstand temperatures up to 60°C.0The standard diameter of the fittings is 19 mm. The price for a 3.5 m long piece is approximately $3.5.

Hose extension

Washing machine manufacturers generally don't recommend extending the drain hose. But what if the drain outlet is far from the machine or isn't routed separately, and the standard 1.2-meter length isn't long enough? In this case, either replace the entire drain hose or extend it to the required length.

The first option is safer, since additional joints on the hose pose a risk of water leaks. When choosing the length of the hose, keep in mind that it cannot be stretched, so leave a small reserve.

The maximum length should not exceed 3.5 meters. Longer hoses will put strain on the pump. If the pump is weak, it may soon fail.

hose adapter

To connect the two hoses, you'll need an adapter. This is a plastic tube that fits into the ends of the drain hose and is secured with 16x27 mm clamps. It's important not only to extend the hose correctly, but also to connect it correctly. You can read more about this in the article. How to connect a washing machine drain hose to the sewer.

As you can see, the drain hose size is generally standard, especially in terms of diameter. If one of your washing machine's fittings has a non-standard diameter, you'll need to order a custom hose from the manufacturer or add an extra length. You can easily do this yourself.

    Gentlemen, please tell me how to use a segmented hose for drainage?
    Where to cut the segment in the middle or how?
    Is the cut segment only installed in the sewer?

    My new washing machine starts up and then, after 10 minutes, it goes back to the initial stage. Question: could this be caused by a taut drain hose?

    Roma, your drain hose is most likely installed incorrectly, below the level of the new machine's tank, which is a consequence of the so-called siphon effect. You need to either adjust the hose height to fit the new machine (the height is measured from the end fitting; adjusting the middle or the beginning won't help), or buy a siphon (a ball with a spring inside) that fits between the drain hose and the drain hose. This should correct the incorrect height.
