What should I do if my T-shirt has shrunk after washing?
All natural and blended fabrics are prone to shrinkage. It's not uncommon to find an item has shrunk 1-2 sizes after removing it from the washing machine. What should you do if your favorite T-shirt has shrunk after washing? Can you fix the situation, or will you have to say goodbye to it forever? Let's find out if it's possible to restore your T-shirt to its original shape and how to prevent it from shrinking.
Reasons for shrinkage of items
Clothes can lose a couple of centimeters in size for various reasons. To avoid shrinkage, please follow the manufacturer's care instructions on the product label. The fact that a T-shirt has shrunk after washing is usually a consequence of:
- Incorrectly selected spin intensity. For example, the item is made of delicate fabric that shouldn't be spun at all, but the user ignores this rule and sets the spin speed too high;
- Inappropriate temperature conditions. You should adhere to the temperature recommended by the manufacturer and never exceed it;
- The mechanical action of the washing machine. Excessive spinning in the drum is detrimental to cotton and knitwear.
The reason may lie directly in the fabric – some materials are highly susceptible to shrinkage and can lose up to 7% of their original size after washing.
The tendency to shrink depends on the fiber type, density, and weave. Therefore, some items are more susceptible to shrinkage than others. To avoid shrinkage, strictly follow the instructions on the label—do not exceed the washing temperature, spin speed, or ironing temperature.
Most often, items shrink due to high-temperature washing. For example, the label recommends a temperature of up to 40°C, but the owner sets the usual 60°C cycle, ignoring the manufacturer's recommendations. Or, even though all the instructions are followed, the machine, due to a broken heating element, heats the water to 60°C or even 90°C. A malfunctioning washing machine can damage the clothes in the drum.
What should you do if your favorite item has shrunk a couple of sizes? Is it possible to stretch the fabric so you can still wear the T-shirt? Let's explore several ways to restore your garment.
Is it possible to make a T-shirt bigger?
It's possible to restore a shrunken sweater's shape, and several methods for "stretching" the fabric have long been invented. All options are simple and won't require significant investment. To remedy the situation and stretch out your favorite garment, use one of the methods described below.
- If your wool sweater has shrunk, soak it in cool water. Let it sit in the basin for about 20 minutes. Then remove the T-shirt, gently shake it to remove excess moisture, and lay it flat to dry. It's important to straighten the garment and stretch it out by hand to achieve the desired shape.
- For seasoned people, the following option is suitable for restoring the shape of your favorite wool item. The T-shirt should be kept in cold water, and then put on and worn until the fabric is completely dry. So, if you have some free time and aren't afraid of catching a cold, feel free to try this tip. Your T-shirt will instantly fit perfectly.
- You can try saving a silk blouse using a tried-and-true "grandmother's" method. Fill a basin with water and add two or three tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide solution. Soak the item for two hours. When the time is up, don't wring it out. Simply lay a towel on a table and place the blouse on top. The towel will absorb the excess moisture, and the garment will dry and look its best.
- It's extremely rare for a synthetic T-shirt to shrink, but if it does, don't despair. It's even easier: soak the T-shirt in ice-cold water for 15 minutes, then throw it in the washing machine. Use a delicate or hand wash cycle, setting the temperature to no higher than 30°C. No need to add detergent.

- Cotton fabric can be saved with vinegar. Soak a clean cloth in vinegar and wipe the fabric with it. Then hang the item on a clothesline and attach a couple of weights to the bottom. This will stretch the T-shirt one size.
- A shrunken sweater can be saved by soaking it in 10 liters of water with three tablespoons of vinegar added for half an hour. Then, remove the garment, shake off the water, and hang it on the balcony. Once the garment dries, the vinegar smell will be gone.
- The opposite is true: don't cool the T-shirt, but rather warm it up. High temperatures are often the cause of shrinkage, but ironing the material properly can help restore its shape. This method is suitable for silk fabrics. Wet the garment, heat the iron, and iron the shirt from the inside out, stretching it to the desired size.
- If the manufacturer prohibits ironing your T-shirt, try steaming it. While steaming, also stretch the fabric with your hands.
To restore your item to its original appearance, try a more suitable method. In any case, it's easier to prevent a problem than to solve it later. Therefore, when washing your clothing, strictly follow all care instructions on the garment label.
Do not allow shrinkage
In most cases, it's possible to prevent fabric shrinkage. Therefore, to avoid suffering later and wasting time and effort restoring the item, it's best to prevent deformation in the first place. Experts recommend:
- Before washing your T-shirt for the first time, be sure to read the information on the label and always follow the care instructions in the future;
- wash items made from fabrics prone to shrinkage at a temperature not exceeding 30°C;

- Buy wool clothing one size larger. The item will shrink after washing anyway, so this way you can avoid the problem and easily slip into a washed T-shirt.
Avoid washing items prone to shrinkage at high temperatures or spinning at maximum speeds, otherwise the fabric will not lose its shape and will retain its original appearance.
So, it's best not to take things to extremes. It's incredibly unpleasant to buy an item and then find after washing it that it fits a child better. Therefore, always read the label. If the manufacturer prohibits machine washing, you should avoid using it. When the maximum wash temperature is 40°C, don't try to outsmart the system and set it to the usual 60°C. However, if the T-shirt does shrink, be sure to try to restore its original appearance using the methods described above.
