Where is the load sensor located in a washing machine?
The drum load and water level in a washing machine are monitored by a special relay (pressure switch, sensor). This small device sends data to the control module, which uses an algorithm to determine further operations. Repairing or replacing it in the event of a breakdown is easy if you know where it is located.
Location of the sensor
The load sensor is located in the washing machine body. This small, round or rectangular device can be identified by the tube connecting it to the drum. As water is added to the machine, pressure in the tube increases. When this pressure equals the amount of liquid in the drum, the relay contacts switch. The control module, detecting this action, stops filling the machine with water.
If the machine starts to operate incorrectly—draining water, skipping a wash cycle, or not filling the drum at all, etc.—then this is likely due to the water loading relay. Some models of washing machines display a problem code on the display. For example, a Daewoo washing machine informs about problems with the pressure switch by displaying the message “E9”.
The relay may fail if the tube is clogged. You can fix this yourself. If the load sensor malfunction is due to electrical issues (oxidized contacts) or mechanical issues (damaged or worn membrane), it must be removed. In a Daewoo washing machine, the aforementioned "E9" message can only be cleared by removing the pressure switch.
Before dismantling any element of the washing machine, it is necessary to completely turn it off.
- turn off the outside water valve (if any);
- de-energize the machine (remove the cord from the socket);
- Unscrew the two rear screws, remove the top cover and inspect the interior of the machine.
Depending on the washing machine model, the load sensor is located in one of the following places:
- Manufacturers of washing machines Daewoo, Candy, LG, Samsung, Indesit place the pressure switch on the right side of the body, closer to the front;
- in Whirlpool and Ardo machines, the load sensor is also located on the right side of the body, but closer to the back wall;
- Machine manufacturer Bosch places this relay, which is distinguished by its large dimensions, in the center of the right side.
In some models, it's located lower and hidden behind wires. If you have trouble finding the sensor, use the tube leading from the drum as a guide. In older top-loading washing machines, the pressure switch may be located in the bottom tray. Therefore, if you still have the manual, consult it. Such design solutions are no longer used today.
How to remove the specified sensor?
Once you have located the load sensor, remove it as follows:
- remove the wires from the pressure switch contacts;
- disconnect the hose-tube;
- Loosen the mounting screw or, if the sensor is latched, turn it clockwise.
Inspect the relay and tube. If you see a defect that cannot be repaired, purchase a new one, taking the old unit with you to the store as a sample. Install the new sensor in the reverse order of removal.
