What depth do dishwashers come in?
When planning the interior of a kitchen, it's essential to carefully consider the placement of every piece to ensure everything fits perfectly. But what if, at the planning stage, we haven't yet decided exactly what furniture or appliances we'll purchase? While kitchen cabinetry is easier—we can draw a sketch with a designer and order it custom-sized—what about appliances, particularly a dishwasher? To avoid making a mistake with the dimensions and ruining the look, it's essential to know the exact dimensions of the dishwasher we're purchasing, particularly its depth. We'll discuss this in this article.
Are there shallow depth dishwashers?
Some might say, "Why bother measuring the dishwasher's depth?" Simply measure the depth of the dishwasher when ordering the cabinetry, leaving 10-15 cm of extra space to accommodate the hoses, and you're done. The main thing is that the width and height exactly match, because when there are gaps between the walls of the niche and the walls of the dishwasher, it turns out unsightly, and if the dishwasher does not fit, then it is a complete "pipe". But in reality, it’s not that simple.
Quite often, the dimensions of kitchen cabinets, and the kitchen itself, simply don't allow for such depth allowance. Moreover, the cabinet's width is too small to even accommodate most dishwasher models, and you still need to leave room for the front panel. Let's do some math. Let's assume we have a fully integrated dishwasher with a depth of 55 cm. We need to calculate the depth of the future niche for it. What should we consider?
- We set aside a base depth of 55 cm.
- We add space for communications to the base depth of 55+10 cm.
- We add another 5 cm to the front part, resulting in 55 + 10 + 5 cm, which gives us a minimum niche depth of 70 cm.
What should people do if the cabinet depth where the dishwasher is to be installed is less than 70 cm? There are three obvious solutions:
- reduce the estimated depth of the niche by 5 cm due to communications (the hoses will have to be moved);
- find another place for the dishwasher;
- Find a dishwasher model with a smaller depth.
We believe the third option is the most acceptable and safest. Let's try looking for a shallower dishwasher, perhaps not 55 cm, but 50 cm, or even 45 cm, or maybe even 40 cm. But do such dishwashers even exist?
Having analyzed the offer on the modern dishwasher market, experts came to the conclusion – In Russia and neighboring countries, you can buy a dishwasher with a minimum depth of 48 cm.You won't find a dishwasher with a depth of either 45 or 40 cm. In principle, 48 cm is quite good; few cabinets are narrower, but the problem is that dishwashers with a depth of 50 and 48 cm are typically smaller.
Compact dishwashers They won't suit everyone, as they require a special installation method and are not suitable for full in-wall installations. They only hold a small amount of dishes—about six place settings. They are quite noisy and quite limited in functionality. It seems that by purchasing a compact dishwasher with a depth of 50 or 48 cm, you gain space but lose out on technical features, as even for a family of three, such a machine will be too small.
What about full-size and slimline dishwashers? Isn't there at least one model with a depth of less than 55 cm?
We can no longer even dream of standard dishwashers with a depth of 50, 45, or 40 cm. There are dishwashers slightly larger than 50 cm, but also smaller than 55 cm, and there are quite a few of them, so let's talk about them.
Depth of narrow dishwashers
We'll be doing a quick review of narrow dishwashers with a depth greater than 50 cm but less than 55 cm. We collected the data for this review using Yandex Market, and here's the result.
- The Gorenje GV50211 is a slim, fully integrated dishwasher with a 9-place setting capacity. Dimensions (W x D x H) are 45 x 54 x 82 cm. Average price: $210.
- The Korting KDI45175 is another narrow dishwasher, but with a larger capacity—10 place settings. Dimensions (W x D x H) are 45 x 54 x 82 cm. This machine can be purchased for $300.

- The Midea M45BD-1006D3 is a similar narrow washing machine, which comes with 10 sets. W x D x H: 45 x 54 x 82 cm. Price: $270.
- The Delonghi DDW06S is a very spacious, narrow dishwasher, capable of holding 12 place settings. Its dimensions are similar: W x D x H – 45 x 54 x 82 cm. It costs around $300.
- The Hankel WEE1745 is a dishwasher less than 45 cm wide, with dimensions of 44.5 x 54 x 81.5 cm and 8 place settings. Average price: $280.
- The MBS DW-451 is a narrow dishwasher with the smallest depth of any we found (W x D x H)—45 x 51 x 82 cm—yet it easily accommodates nine place settings. This is a very good result for a depth of just 51 cm. This machine costs $310.
The majority of narrow dishwashers have a depth of 55 cm or more. In our review, we tried to feature models with a shallower depth. These are mostly machines with a depth of 54 cm, but there are also some with a depth of 51 cm. We didn't find any narrow dishwashers with a depth of 50 or even 40 cm or less, and apparently they are not available for sale.
Be careful! In some cases, manufacturers intentionally misrepresent the dimensions of their dishwashers, especially Chinese companies. It's best to double-check.
Depth of full-size dishwashers
We've covered the depth of narrow dishwashers. The MBS DW-451 has the smallest depth of 51 cm; narrow dishwashers 50 cm or less are not available. What about full-size dishwashers 60 cm wide? About the same. Models with a depth of less than 55 cm are not numerous, but they do exist. Let's give some examples.
- Media M60BD-1205L2 is a full-size, fully integrated dishwasher with a width of 60 cm,
holds 12 place settings. W x D x H – 60 x 54 x 82 cm, price $260. - The Zigmund & Shtain DW60003X is a fully integrated dishwasher with a width of 60 cm and 12 place settings. It is 54 cm deep and 82 cm high and costs $246.
- The Maunfeld MLP-12ln is a 60 x 54 x 82 cm dishwasher with a 14-place setting capacity. It costs $360.
- The Korting KDI6045 is a 60 x 54 x 82 cm machine with a 14-piece wash tank. The average price is $325.
The list could go on, but it would only include dishwashers with a depth of 54 cm. Full-size dishwashers with a depth of 50 cm or less are not available, nor are dishwashers with a depth of less than 54 cm. However, there are plenty of deep dishwashers: 60 cm, 62 cm, 65 cm!
In conclusion, the depth of a built-in dishwasher, or any other type, is a very important parameter to consider when purchasing. Consider not only the basic depth of the dishwasher but also the space needed for connecting utilities and hanging the front panel. If you need a very shallow dishwasher (less than 50 cm), you'll need to consider compact dishwashers, as the depth of slimline models starts at 51 cm, while full-size models start at 54 cm. Happy shopping!
