How to Prepare Your Dishwasher for Winter

preparing the dishwasher for winterA dishwasher isn't just for use in a 24-hour heated house or apartment. During the warmer months, this "home helper" can work perfectly in a summer kitchen or summer cottage right up until the end of the season. By preparing your dishwasher for winter, you can count on it working perfectly the following season, but you need to know how to prepare it properly. Let's explore this issue in more detail.

If we do nothing?

It's normal for some water to remain in the dishwasher system. While this can be ignored during warmer months, it's a different matter if you plan to store the machine for the winter. Here, you need to proceed methodically and first remove the water from the system. Some people ask: why remove the water at all? There's only so much water in the machine. It'll freeze in the winter and melt in the spring, so what's the big deal?

Even a small piece of ice poses a great danger to the dishwasher parts.

In reality, frozen water in a plastic salt container will simply crush the container. The same will happen to the pipes and the waste filter bowl. As a result, in the spring, instead of a working "home helper," you'll end up with a defective unit that will require major repairs. To prevent your washing machine from breaking down at your dacha in sub-zero temperatures, you need to at least remove the water from it. But that's not all. To prevent the case from corroding and other problems, a number of preparatory steps must be taken, which we'll definitely cover.

How to remove water?

First, you need to figure out how to drain the dishwasher. It's not difficult, but you'll need to disconnect the machine from the water supply, sewer, and power lines.

  1. First of all, open the machine door and empty the washing chamber of baskets and trays.dismantling the dishwasher
  2. Next, remove the debris filter and unscrew the cap of the salt container.
  3. Place a few rags on the floor near the right side of the dishwasher.
  4. Place the machine on its side on the right wall and let the water drain.
  5. Having removed most of the water in this way, you need to return the machine to an upright position, and then fill the salt collector with dishwasher salt.
  6. We put the trash filter back in place and screw the cap of the salt container back on.
  7. Disconnect the drain and inlet hoses, then tilt the dishwasher slightly onto its left side. A little more water should drain from the inlet valve and the circulation unit.

Now there's no water left in the machine. You can store it in freezing temperatures. Nothing special will happen to it.

What else needs to be done?

When preparing a dishwasher for winter storage, should I just drain the water? In fact, draining the water is just one step in preparing the dishwasher for winter, and if I don't do the rest, I risk losing the machine. What are these steps?

  1. Cleaning the machine before storage with a special cleaner. How to do it? Take a good dishwasher cleaner, poured into the powder tray, and then turned on a long wash cycle in hot water.
  2. After cleaning the inside of the machine, you can drain the water in the manner described above.
  3. Next, you need to thoroughly wipe the washing chamber and baskets with a clean cloth.
  4. And finally, we put the machine away instead of storing it, leaving the door slightly open.

The machine should be stored in a dry, clean place to prevent moisture and dirt from getting on the body. There is no need to cover the machine with film or pack it in a box.

So, neglecting to prepare your washing machine for winter is absolutely essential. You could end up losing it, and you'll have to buy a new one by next summer. Take the time to follow a few simple steps, and in just a few months, you'll be enjoying the flawless performance of your "home assistant." Good luck!
