How to remove and disassemble a washing machine drum?

Washing machine tankMany home appliance owners are familiar with washing machine problems such as unusual noise and excessive vibration. One possible cause of this problem is the entry of various foreign objects into individual machine components. For example, you might encounter:

  • metal money,
  • all kinds of buttons,
  • metal buttons,
  • underwire from a women's bra
  • and others.

And then we may be faced with the question:

How to remove a washing machine drum while leaving other parts intact?

Of course, it's best to consult with professionals in this matter. But if you're planning to solve the problem yourself, you should read this article and follow the advice provided.

Preparing for the process

So how do we remove the drum of our household helper? The first step is to unscrew the disposable tank. In this case, after completing all the work, you'll need to replace the tank if it's disposable. It's also possible to reassemble the disposable tank using sealant, bolts, and a little ingenuity. However, we don't recommend this method, as it may not be reliable enough.

How to disassemble a washing machine drum will become clear very soon. This work will only be necessary if the drum's spider needs to be removed. If the bronze bushing wears out, the spider will need to be replaced.

Video of replacing bearings with tank removal and disassembly

In the video below, you'll see the entire process of disassembling the washing machine, including removing and disassembling the drum and replacing the bearings.

Even though the recording is in English, the master's actions will be clear. Simply follow along, and you'll complete everything you need to do.

Let's get to work

So, you've already disassembled your machine. What next?

You should only remove your washing machine's tank when absolutely necessary. This means replacing damaged bearings or removing a foreign object from the tank.

The drum design itself can vary quite a bit depending on the model. However, the entire removal process is the same. It begins with removing your machine's locking pulley. It's secured to the drum shaft with a special nut or bolt in the very center of this part. In our case, you need to unscrew this locking element of the pulley counterclockwise, not clockwise. Before doing this, you'll need to block the pulley with a block to prevent it from rotating along with the drum shaft.

Washing machine pulley and beltIn most cases, loosening a bolt is very difficult. This is due to the special compound embedded inside it, which holds it in place and prevents it from loosening while the washing machine is running. So, if you're having trouble loosening a pulley bolt in your washing machine, try heating it first with a gas torch. This will cause the metal to expand, and the bolt will eventually come loose. However, it's important to remember that using a gas torch requires extreme caution. If you decide to use one, do so at your own risk.

After loosening the bolt, carefully remove the washing machine pulley. To remove the washing machine pulley, pull it toward you and rock it back and forth. Then, tap the shaft out of the bearing. A wooden block will help with this. Tap it until the shaft is level with the bearings, or until the drum starts to rest against the front of the washing machine tub.

Be sure to unscrew the drum circumferentially. Some washing machine models use latches or brackets as an alternative to bolts, but the most important part remains the same. Once you've unscrewed the bolts around the entire drum, be sure to check for any fastening elements connecting the two halves. Now you know how to disassemble a washing machine drum—simply separate the two halves. Then, the drum can be removed without much effort.
