What kind of bearings are in a washing machine?

What kind of bearings are in a washing machine?A washing machine's design is meticulously thought out, and a malfunction of even a small bearing assembly will immediately affect the machine's operation. The washing machine will begin to knock, make noise, and rattle, eventually leading to a loud roar. Failure to replace these parts can permanently damage the machine and cost a considerable amount of money in major repairs. Therefore, it's important to promptly respond to knocking and vibration, and first, find out what type of bearings are in the drum. Our article will help you choose the right size and type.

Where are the bearings located?

Without theory, you can't perform a replacement, so let's delve into the mechanics of any washing machine. Let's pay attention to the space between the drum and the pulley—that's where the bearing assembly is located, mounted in a special crosspiece. The crosspiece is easy to find: it's attached to the back or side of the tub and has 3-4 branches. Together with the bearings, the crosspiece ensures smooth and trouble-free rotation. The subassembly consists of two bearings:

  • the internal one, which is located closer to the drum and “takes on” the entire load, and therefore it is thicker and larger in diameter;
  • external one, which is installed at the other end of the shaft, and it is an order of magnitude smaller than its “colleague” and performs an auxiliary function.

Important! Modern washing machines sometimes feature stronger and more durable mono-bearings, which are a single ring with two rows.

Where are the bearings installed?

A rubber seal is located between the shaft and the assembly, and the bearings are protected from friction and water vapor by seals. All bearing system components are thoroughly lubricated with a special compound to ensure consistent sliding.

What types of bearing elements are there?

Bearings installed in washing machines come in metal and plastic. You can identify the type by the markings on the outer surface: 2RS denotes plastic, and ZZ denotes metal. And, as strange as it may sound, plastic bearings are considered more reliable and durable. The whole “secret” is that both types have a metal base, but in the second case the structure is complemented by a plastic top coating. Thanks to this protection, the part more easily tolerates seal leaks and is less subject to friction.

Plastic bearings are rare, however, as their high cost forces manufacturers to use cheaper components. However, with proper use and timely repairs, the difference between the parts is not very noticeable. Therefore, it's not recommended to replace the original bearing with an improved one in an existing vehicle; it's better to install a factory replacement.

Why do they have to be changed?

Bearings, like other washing machine components, are subject to natural wear and tear. Even expensive, high-quality, and durable washing machines from brands like Indesit, Ariston, Bosch, Samsung, and LG have a standard lifespan of 6-7 years. This is assuming proper operation and no manufacturing defects. In reality, the lifespan is significantly shorter due to numerous improper use:

  • Frequent overloading of the machine with excess of the maximum permissible weight;
  • using the machine to store heavy items;
  • body tilt;
  • untimely repair or replacement.

Most often, the cause of rapid wear lies in the last point, especially when it comes to seals. This rubber gasket protects the bearings from water ingress and grease washout. If a leaking seal and washed-out grease are not noticed in time, a minor failure can lead to serious problems.

What kind of bearings are installed in different machines?

Almost anyone can replace damaged bearings. The more difficult part is determining which part is ideal for your existing home vending machine. It's important to understand that even within a single brand, the size range of components varies greatly, so it won't be possible to buy a universal spare part.

It's best to check the bearing type in the manual that came with your specific unit. If you don't have the technical manual handy, you can take the alternative route and search for the machine's serial number online. The easiest option is to remove the old unit and find a similar one among the store's selection. However, there's no guarantee that the previous owner didn't modify the washing machine with a bearing of the wrong diameter and thickness.

You can also select the bearing size for your washing machine based on the manufacturer. Each manufacturer prefers specific diameters:

Please note: The list of bearings is for informational purposes only, as brands may vary the configuration at their own discretion.

  • Bearings of the 203-204 type are most commonly used, while 205-206 are less common. The only non-standard bearing type is the WF-R105AV, which is compatible with 305-306.bearings and seal
  • LG. The bearing system is similar to Samsung washing machines: 6203-6204, 6205-6206, and, extremely rarely, 6305-6306.
  • Bosch. ZZ-type parts are available in sizes from 6203 to 6206 and from 6305 to 6306.
  • Ariston. Most washing machines are equipped with a double-row SKF BA2B 306037 mono-bearing. In other cases, for example, for the Ariston ALS 1048 CTX, we purchase numbers from 203 to 206 ZZ.
  • Ardo. The most common variants in the WD, A, FLZ, and S models are 6204 and 6305. For the TL and FLS, only 6202 and 6203 are required.
  • Indesit. It's best to use specific dimensions as a guide. So, with an internal diameter of 2 cm, an external diameter of 4.7 cm and a height of 1.4 cm, we choose 6204-2RSR, and for values of 2.5 cm, 5.2 cm and 1.5 cm respectively – ZVL 6205-2RSR. If the measurements do not match, then we stop at bearings of type 203-204.
  • Beko. Only metal bearings are suitable, with numbers ranging from 6203 to 6205 depending on the model.
  • Standard bearing systems types 203-205 and 204-205 are provided.
  • Atlant. The fewest suitable markings are 6204 and 6205.

Knowing the standard dimensions used by a specific manufacturer allows you to check the sales consultant's recommendations and confirm your choice. However, remember that much depends on the specific model. Therefore, don't neglect the opportunity to remove the old bearing and use it as a reference.

The main thing is to consider other aspects of the upcoming repair, in addition to the dimensions. For example, choose genuine parts or Korean-made products. And remember that you can't replace just one bearing. The entire unit must be removed and reinstalled, and it's even better to install new seals as well.
