Error codes (malfunctions) for Indesit and Ariston washing machines

Indesit, Ariston, MerloniThese days, almost all automatic washing machines available in home appliance stores feature a special fault detection system. It identifies a malfunction or failure and displays an error code on the machine's display. This facilitates diagnostics, identifying, and repairing the defect. This system is featured in appliances manufactured by INDESIT COMPANY, formerly MERLONI. The most popular washing machines produced by this company are Ariston and Indesit.

Models manufactured under these brands for a long time and equipped with the now-outdated EVO-I control system also have the ability to notify the user of errors. However, error codes are displayed not via a display, but by blinking the indicator light. The concept of identifying the code using blinking is quite simple. For example, five blinks with a very short interval, followed by a brief pause and then a second blink, would indicate error code F05.

Washing machines with the EVO-II control system have a different way of identifying error codes. Different models with this system have different functionality, making it slightly more difficult to read the error codes.

Inexpensive washing machines made under the Indesit and Ariston brands lack a display. In these models, error information is displayed using a combination of illuminated indicators.

Error codes are easiest to understand on washing machines equipped with a display. Letters and numbers are displayed on the display itself.

How to identify an error code on an EVO-II washing machine without a display?

In such washing machines, you can understand the error code by the light that appears on various indicators. The indicators of such models are as follows:

  1. KH1 - Timer,
  2. KN2 - Super wash,
  3. KN3 - Quick wash,
  4. KN4 – Additional Rinse,
  5. LED 4 – Wringing out laundry.

Some of these indicators light up, and by which ones do this, you can understand what error has occurred.

List of EVO-II errors and their interpretation

  • Only KN4 lights up – error F01 — The electric motor's control thyristor shorted out.
  • Only KN3 lights up – error F02 – The tachogenerator doesn't indicate that the machine's engine is running. This can happen if the drive belt is jammed, the circuit is short-circuited, or the circuit is broken.
  • KN3 and KN4 are lit – error F03 – there was a short circuit or the temperature sensor circuit was broken.
  • KN2 – F4 – simultaneous information about opposite things (the level relay informs that the tank is full and empty).
  • KN2 and KN4 - F5 – After the command to drain the tank is issued, the level switch does not indicate that the tank is empty. In this case, the following malfunctions are possible: a faulty pressure switch (level switch), a faulty drain pump, or a clogged drain system.
  • KN2 and KN3 – F6 — The command was not understood; there was an error with the buttons on the control panel.
  • KN2, KN3 and KN4 – F07 – The washing machine's heating element isn't heating. This can happen when it's not immersed in water.
  • KN1 – F08 – The heating element relay contact group is stuck. The heating element is broken or there's a wiring issue.
  • KN1 and KN4 – F09 — The machine's volatile memory has failed.
  • KN1 and KN3 – F10 — There is no message from the pressure switch (level relay) that the washing machine tank is empty or full.
  • KN1, KN3 and KN4 – F11 – There's no power to the drain pump. Most likely, there's a broken wire.
  • KN1 and KN2 – F12 – There is no communication between the controller and the indicator module.
  • KN1, KN2 and KN4 – F13 – The wires are broken or the temperature sensor circuit is short-circuited.
  • KN1, KN2 and KN3 – F14 – The dryer's heating element is faulty. This problem only occurs in machines with a drying function.
  • KN1, KN2, KN3 and KN4 – F15 – The dryer's heating element has failed. This problem can occur in washing machines with a drying function.
  • All indicators are not lit – F16 – The washing machine drum is jammed (only for models with top loading of laundry).
  • LED4 and KN4 – F17 – There's no power to the washing machine door lock, or it's in the open position.
  • LED4 and KN3 – F18 – Communication failure between the controller and the processor controlling the electric motor (asynchronous).

Indesit washing machine error table

A detailed analysis of error codes for Indesit and Ariston washing machines and their repair.

Below, we'll discuss in more detail the errors that occur when washing machines malfunction and how to fix them.

Start of table:

Code Diagnostics and repair Explanations
F01 The electric motor's thyristor has shorted out. Here's what to do:

  1. Make sure that no moisture gets inside the J9 connector.
  2. Carefully inspect the electric motor's terminal block. The contacts may be damaged or corroded.
  3. Replace the electronics module.
In most cases, such a breakdown is associated with a faulty washing machine motor.
F02 The washing machine motor isn't working. There's a short circuit or fault in the tachogenerator circuit. What should I do?

  1. Make sure that the engine is not seized.
  2. Carefully inspect connector J9. Make sure it is securely connected and there are no loose connections.
  3. Measure the tachometer resistance. Make sure it's within the normal range (115 to 170 ohms).

The resistance is measured at connector J9, between the first and second contacts. If the circuit is shorted, then test the wiring from the tachometer sensor. If the machine uses an asynchronous motor, ensure that contacts six and seven of the same connector are securely connected and in good condition.

The motor and electronic module may need to be replaced.

There may be a faulty connection in the tachometer connector. It's also possible that foam has gotten into it. If it's shorted, you'll find a couple of tracks and a couple of bad resistors on the electronics module.
F03 The heating element relay is stuck or there are problems with the NTC temperature sensor circuit.

  1. Make sure that the J8 connector is working properly.
  2. Make sure that the temperature sensor gives normal resistance.
  3. Replace the NTC temperature sensor.
  4. Replace the electronics module.
If nothing in the "Diagnostics and Repair" column helps, then the EEPROM memory needs to be reflashed.
