DIY barbecue grill from a washing machine

barbecue from a washing machineThese days, you can buy a decent factory-made grill fairly inexpensively, but why bother when we have a shed full of suitable parts that can be used to create an excellent device for free? It wouldn't be a bad idea, for example, to make a grill out of a washing machine drum. Such a homemade grill can be made, without any special skills, in a couple of hours, and even then, it's a bit of a slog. Let's see how it's done.

Why a washing machine drum?

First, you need to think about what to make the brazier out of. It needs to be compact, roomy enough to hold as many coals as possible, and, of course, durable enough to last for many seasons. If you have a used washing machine drum, consider the problem solved—the drum itself makes a great brazier, and anyone can make a brazier out of it.

The drum is great because it's made of high-quality stainless steel, which can withstand high temperatures. This steel is corrosion-resistant, meaning the grill doesn't need to be stored in a dry place; it can be placed right outside.

  1. There are many small holes in the walls of the washing machine drum through which thewashing machine drum Air flows through, fanning the coals. In such a brazier, both meat and vegetables cook very quickly.
  2. A grill made from a washing machine drum and tank is lightweight and durable, and can be stored away in a shed until next season. Overall, with this setup, you can cook shashlik for decades without worrying about the sides or bottom of the grill burning through.
  3. Moreover, store-bought collapsible grills are often made "from scratch." The parts used to assemble the grill pan and legs have numerous sharp edges that can cut your hands. When you buy a new grill, you have to take a file and file down the sharp edges, making them safer. The washing machine drum has no sharp edges, so the roaster will be completely safe, and if you polish it up, it will be even better.

Parts and tools

The beauty of this project is that you don't need any special materials to make a grill from washing machine parts. You could use just the drum of a washing machine, but then the grill would be too low and difficult to work with. We'll be making a tall grill on a stand, so we'll need the drum itself from a washing machine and an old iron pipe.

When our craftsmen were building a barbecue grill from an old washing machine, they couldn't find an iron pipe of the right length, but they did find an old, unwanted metal flower stand. It was perfect for the job, so they decided to use it to make the grill's leg. In this case, you can also get creative and see what else you have around the house that could be used to make a stand. The main thing is that the material of the stand is durable and non-flammable.

In addition to the pot and flower stand, we took six 10mm bolts and nuts and a 40mm metal angle iron 80cm long. You can basically use any angle iron. If you don't have an 80cm long piece, use a shorter one. Ideally, you need two 40cm long pieces. Now for the tools:

  • Bulgarian;
  • drill;
  • flat file:
  • roulette;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • marker;
  • pliers.

If you're a master of using an angle grinder, you can get by without a hacksaw. Just be careful not to cut off any excess material from the washing machine drum or tub, which could cause injury. Exercise caution when working with such power tools.

Assembling the device

The preparations are complete, it's time to build the grill yourself and finally grill the first batch of shashlik. First, let's remake the drum ourselves. Take a grinder and cut the hatch opening, widening it and making it rectangular.

After using the grinder, we'll grab the drill. Drill 10mm holes for the bolts along the edges of the cut rectangular hole. Drill similar holes in the corner piece, and then screw the corner piece to the tank as shown in the picture below.

Our grill is almost ready; at least we've already made the brazier ourselves, now we just need to make the stand. It's time to put that old flower stand to good use. We place our brazier on the stand and bolt it down tight.barbecue stand

There's nothing else you need to do, as the grill is now securely positioned on the stand. You can start lighting the coals and then grill the kebabs. The corners we screwed onto the drum will allow us to more conveniently and at the same height place the skewers with pieces of meatRest assured, in this case they will be fried equally well.

Besides the drum, an automatic washing machine still has quite a few parts that can be easily repurposed for household use. Primarily, the motor. If the motor is working, it can be used to make many useful things. If you don't believe me, read this article. a sharpening machine made from a washing machine motor, you will find a lot of useful information in it.

To summarize, making a grill from parts of an automatic washing machine is very simple; you don't even have to do much reworking. Just make a larger hole near the hatch and screw on a corner piece. Good luck!
