Is it possible to wash an electric kettle in the dishwasher?
For many people, the electric kettle has become a versatile household appliance. Some even manage to boil dumplings in it. Understandably, with such intensive use, the appliance quickly gets dirty, and people are tempted to wash it in the dishwasher. At first glance, this sounds absurd, but the question is asked too often on various forums: can you wash an electric kettle in the dishwasher? We'll give a detailed answer to this question.
What will happen to the electrical appliance?
Some dishwasher owners use their "household helpers" to the fullest. It's amazing how they come up with such a thing. The dishwasher cleans:
- garden tools;
- rubber boots;
- raw root vegetables (mainly potatoes and carrots);
- plastic massage devices;
- chandelier parts;
- elbow and knee pads;
- boxing gloves and mouth guards;
- helmets and leather gloves;
- umbrellas;
- flower pots and much more.
Exotic food lovers even manage to cook food in the dishwasher.
If they even think about it cooking food in the dishwasherSo why judge those who think of stuffing electrical appliances, in this case an electric kettle, into the dishwasher? Experts agree that this should never be done. A kettle contains a number of electrical components: a switch, an LED, several contacts, wires, and a sensor. By washing a kettle in the dishwasher, we expose these electrical components to a lot of moisture.
Those who favor innovative dishwasher use might reasonably point out that the kettle can be thoroughly dried before use. While this is true, the kettle is exposed to a warm, humid environment for a long time during dishwashing. When exposed to moisture and detergents, metal contacts become coated with oxides, which can cause the kettle to malfunction.
Moisture can be removed by drying, but oxidation can only be removed by cleaning the contacts. If you can completely disassemble the kettle after washing, clean its contacts, and apply an anti-corrosion treatment, then it's safe to wash. However, if you don't plan to disassemble the kettle, it's best not to put it in the dishwasher.
If the kettle's body is plastic or ceramic, that's one thing, but if it's metal, corrosion can affect the body as well. In this case, you're at high risk of losing the kettle. Don't risk it; clean electric kettles by hand.
What is the best way to clean a kettle?
Many homeowners say that the best way to clean a kettle of various internal contaminants, including limescale, is to boil it with citric acid. It's very simple. Fill the dirty kettle with water (you should fill it almost full). Next, add 25 grams of citric acid and bring it to a boil 2-3 times. The dirt will come off immediately, but the limescale will become brittle and partially peel off. Remove any remaining limescale with a cloth sprinkled with citric acid, and you'll have a sparkling clean kettle.
Some housewives talk about a serious disadvantage of this cleaning method, and we cannot help but mention it. 2-3 boilings with citric acid can “kill” an electric kettle. It might leak. Some specialists also hint at this, but don't say so outright.
There's a safer way to clean a kettle using vinegar. Pour a little vinegar essence into the kettle, put on rubber gloves, and begin scrubbing the inside of the kettle, as far as the narrow neck allows. This method is generally acceptable; the smell in your kitchen will be simply amazing. If possible, clean the kettle outside, then rinse it, let it air out in a draft, and then bring it inside.
Some also suggest boiling the kettle with potato peelings or even cucumber brine, but we recommend purchasing a special cleaner for electric kettles. It's quite inexpensive, but you'll be sure of positive results and won't lose your kettle.
So, an electric kettle has no business being in the dishwasher, that's for sure! Don't bother with these dubious experiments; trust me, they won't lead to anything good. While a new kettle isn't exactly expensive, why make these unnecessary sacrifices?
