Mouton fur coats not only look chic but also provide excellent winter warmth, trapping heat and preventing frost from reaching the body. Mouton fur is quite demanding in terms of care, so cleaning the outerwear can be a real challenge for its owners.

Most often, a sheepskin coat is taken to a dry cleaner, where specialists quickly and effectively remove all stains. Some craftsmen try washing a sheepskin coat in a washing machine. Let's explore the best care for such an item and whether machine washing is even possible.

Is it acceptable to use a machine?

The question of whether it is permissible to wash mouton worries many owners of such items. It is forbidden to wet a mouton fur coat too much, as this can irreparably damage the product. After contact with water, there is a high risk of deformation of the fur; it may become matted or come out in clumps.

Mouton fur coats cannot be washed either by hand or in a washing machine.

Is dry cleaning really the only option? After all, fur coat owners aren't always willing to part with the hefty price tag that comes with dry cleaning. Let's figure out how to refresh your fur and remove stains at home.

Self-cleaning options

Since prolonged contact with water is harmful to a mouton fur coat, dry washing is the only option. For cleaning, you can use special mouton detergents or resort to folk remedies.

When sheepskin has become dull and lost its shine, vinegar is a good remedy. First, dilute a spoonful of vinegar in a liter of water. Next, hang the coat on a hanger and drape a damp cotton sheet soaked in the solution over it. Then, simply beat the coat by hand on both sides. All the dust will settle on the cloth, and the fur will shine again.

You can slightly refresh the fur by simply vacuuming it with a special attachment for upholstered furniture.

A wide-toothed wooden comb will help remove small debris, pet hair, and loose fur. Simply comb the fur gently in the direction of the grain. Your coat will look instantly fresher.

If stains and streaks are clearly visible on your short fur coat, try removing them using one of the following methods.

1. Fill a basin with warm water and dissolve laundry detergent or powder in it. Work up a generous amount of soap. Using a sponge or soft brush, apply a small amount of lather to the fur and rub in one direction. Once all soiled areas have been treated, remove any remaining detergent with a clean, slightly damp cloth and hang the coat to dry.
2. Mix 100 ml of water, the same amount of vinegar, and rubbing alcohol. Apply this solution to the stain using a foam pad or cotton ball. Then, wipe the area with a dry cotton cloth. Then, let the fur coat air dry.
3. Add 15 ml of ammonia and 3 tablespoons of salt to 0.5 liters of water. Stir until the granules are completely dissolved. Apply the resulting solution to the fur. Then brush the mouton with a soft brush and comb it in the direction of the nap.

When asked whether a mouton fur coat can be washed, the answer is a clear no. However, it is perfectly acceptable to clean it at home using one of the approved methods.

What to clean with?

Today, you can find specialized care products for fur products in stores. Professional formulations can remove heavy dirt, greasy stains, and grease and makeup marks. Typically these are special wipes, brushes, foams for deep cleaning of pile, and cleaning sprays.

You can buy products that not only remove old stains but also prevent new ones from forming. They form an invisible film that protects the mouton from stains.

For minor, localized stains, there's no need to spend money on expensive household chemicals. For cleaning, you can use:

• Washing powder, liquid soap, or laundry soap. Of course, since washing sheepskin is prohibited, these products are used only to create a rich lather;
• Vinegar. A vinegar solution is great for removing grease from fur and helps restore shine;
• Alcohol. Removes grease from sheepskin and neutralizes odor. How to prepare a cleaning solution from water, salt, and alcohol has already been described;
• Hydrogen peroxide. Can only be used to clean light-colored sheepskin coats. This inexpensive pharmacy product helps remove yellowing and grease stains. Prepare a solution of 500 ml of water, a spoonful of hydrogen peroxide, and 45 grams of table salt.

Do not use chlorine-containing products to wash mouton fur. This includes chlorine-based bleaches, solvents, and acetone. Harsh ingredients will inevitably damage the fur garment.

Some tips

To avoid damaging your expensive sheepskin coat, be sure to follow these basic washing instructions. Remember that sheepskin outerwear should never be submerged in water; it should only be dry-cleaned. It's also important to keep a few things in mind:

• do not spray the pile with perfume, otherwise the light-colored mouton may turn yellow;
• Brush your fur regularly. This will help remove debris and dust that can cause stains.
• Ignore advice on cleaning sheepskin with sand or gasoline.

Any untested methods can negatively impact your favorite sheepskin coat. Therefore, stick to only truly effective cleaning methods. Most importantly, don't wash the item; if it's heavily soiled, it's best to take it to the dry cleaner.
