How to Replace a Dishwasher Pump
When we say "replace the pump" in an Ariston, Bosch, or other dishwasher, we mean replacing either the drain pump or the circulation pump. Replacing the pump is simpler and less expensive, but replacing the circulation pump will be significantly more expensive, even if you do the repair yourself. Learn how to replace both pumps in this article.
Getting ready for work
Some experts claim that most dishwasher repairs can be done practically with bare hands. Typically, all you need is a flathead or Phillips-head screwdriver. But to be on the safe side, you'll need pliers, a multimeter, and an awl.
- Pliers are needed to tighten the fasteners that hold the dishwasher pump.
- Screwdrivers are needed to remove fasteners.
- An awl will come in handy for prying up panels to make their removal easier.
- A multimeter is needed to measure the resistance of electrical elements.
But preparing for repair and replacement of the drain pump and circulation pump isn't limited to selecting the right tools; you also need to properly prepare the dishwasher itself. What steps should you take?
- Dishwasher Bosch or Ariston is disconnected from the socket.
- We turn off the water.
- We unscrew the lower decorative strip, which is located under the dishwasher door.
- We disconnect the inlet hoses from the machine body.
- We move the dishwasher body forward a little.
- We disconnect the drain hose from the siphon and twist it.
- We spread cellophane on the floor, throw several large rags on top, and only then put the dishwasher in.
Important! The above method is used to prepare built-in dishwashers from Bosch, Ariston, and others for repair. Freestanding dishwashers are slightly easier to disconnect and remove, but the process is essentially the same.
Replacing the drain pump: step-by-step instructions
The pump (drain pump) is a snap to replace; the main thing is to disassemble the dishwasher correctly, but this can be problematic. If you follow the instructions, the entire repair from start to finish will take no more than 20 minutes. disassembling a dishwasher It'll take the most time. So, let's get started disassembling the machine and replacing the drain pump.
- We open the door of the Bosch or Ariston dishwasher and take out the trays and baskets for dishes from the tank.
- We take out the flat sprinkler.
- We unscrew the plastic trash filter, which looks like a glass.
- We remove the filter mesh.
- We unscrew the fasteners located under the mesh.
- Now you need to turn over or tilt the Bosch or Ariston dishwasher on its side.
- We remove the side panels and plastic fasteners.
Please note: When you reassemble the car after completing the repair, be sure to replace these fasteners.
- Thermal insulation may interfere, so we put it aside.
- Next, we unhook the filler pipe and disconnect the tray with the units from the body of the Bosch or Ariston dishwasher.
- Next, turn off each element located in the pan, including the circulation pump, for this we carefully pull off all the wires.
- There is a pump on the side of the circulation pump; you need to firmly grasp it with your hand and turn it to the left half a turn – the pump will easily come off.
The old pump has been removed, now you need to get an original spare part that will not only be compatible with your dishwasher Bosch or Ariston, it must be approved by the manufacturer. Only then can you be sure the dishwasher will function properly. The easiest option is to copy the factory markings from the old pump and order a similar one online. Alternatively, go to a store that sells washing machine and dishwasher parts, show the salesperson the old pump, and ask for an identical one.
The Bosch or Ariston dishwasher drain pump has been purchased, and now it's time to install it. The pump is inserted into the recess of the circulation pump, turned half a turn to the right, the wires are connected to the terminals (the plug with the wires was disconnected earlier), and then the dishwasher is reassembled in reverse order – the repair is complete.
How to replace a circulation pump?
The pump (drain pump) of a Bosch or Ariston dishwasher is easy to replace, but replacing the circulation pump is also not difficult; the main thing is to have an understanding of how your own "home assistant" works. The drain pump simply removes wastewater, but the circulation pump has a more complex function. It circulates water, delivering it through the sprinklers into the tank, allowing dishes to be washed.
In some cases, a flow-through heating element is installed within the circulation unit of a Bosch or Ariston dishwasher. Its purpose is to heat the water, maintaining its temperature during the wash cycle. Repairs that involve replacing the circulation pump also begin with disassembling the dishwasher. We've already described how to do this above. Next, proceed as follows:
- disconnect the drain hose from the circulation unit;
- we remove the circulation unit from the fasteners that are located underneath it on the side;
- disconnect the inlet hose.
Important! Before removing the circulating pump, disconnect all wiring. It's a good idea to label all wiring to avoid confusion later.
Now all that's left to do is carefully remove the circulation unit and install the new one in its place. On Bosch and some other dishwashers, the circulation unit is non-removable, so it must be replaced as a whole. Replace the old unit with the new one and reassemble the machine in reverse order. The repair is complete!
In conclusion, we'd like to point out that dishwasher repairs that involve replacing the drain or circulation pump won't require any significant effort. The key is to proceed systematically and learn the intricacies of disassembling your dishwasher beforehand, and the repair will be successful. The drain pump is slightly easier to replace, but generally, the circulation pump is just as easy to replace. Good luck!
