The door won't open after washing in my LG washing machine.
Imagine this: an LG washing machine finishes washing and signals the user. The user approaches the machine to remove the laundry, but can't because the door remains locked. What a joke, the machine won't release the laundry. "It would be funny if it weren't so sad." Why doesn't the door open on an LG washing machine after washing? Let's figure it out together.
Why doesn't the door open?
If this is your first time encountering this problem, don't panic. The fact is that some delay in unlocking the hatch door after the LG washing machine has finished washing is normal.
The door locking and unlocking mechanism is controlled by the door locking system. The locking mechanism contains a plate made of a special alloy. When power is applied, the plate heats up, locking the locking hook and, with it, the door. Once the machine is finished, power is removed and the plate gradually cools. Once cool, the plate unlocks the hook, allowing the door to be opened. The rate at which the plate cools depends on a number of factors:
- ambient temperature;
- washing machine body temperature;
If you've been washing at high temperatures for a long time, don't expect it to unlock quickly, as the heated washing machine body will continue to transfer heat to the door lock for some time.
- location of the washing machine.
The last factor is very important. Users often install washing machines in the kitchen next to the stove. Heat from the hot stove is transferred to the washing machine body, prolonging the plate's cooling process. This causes the problem. Regardless, if the door locking system is working properly, the door should unlock sooner or later. What should be done?
- After finishing washing, unplug the machine from the power supply.
- We wait a maximum of 15-20 minutes.
- We try to open it, if the door still remains locked, we need to take measures for emergency opening.
How to open a machine correctly?
If, despite your best efforts, the door of your LG washing machine won't open, you'll have to urgently open the door and remove the laundry. Of course, we won't try to force the lock with a crowbar or sledgehammer; there are much more humane methods.
- First, let's check if the machine is de-energized.
- If the hoses are long enough, pull the washing machine out to access the top lid. You may need to disconnect the inlet and drain hoses; in that case, remember to turn off the water supply.
- Next you need to remove the top cover of the washing machine.

- Reach your hand down through the hole at the top and pull the emergency release flag. The device is located approximately at the level of the door handle, so to quickly locate the emergency release flag, shine a flashlight there.
- While moving the flag with one hand, you must use the fingers of your other hand to open the hatch door.
That's it, the door opened successfully this time, but the problem will reoccur during the next wash cycle. To avoid disassembling your LG washing machine after every wash, you need to determine the cause of the problem and repair it yourself.
We are troubleshooting the problem
First, we need to remove the front panel of the LG washing machine, test the door lock, and confirm that it's broken. Next, we need to either repair the door lock or replace it. Most likely, it's the latter, but that's still a long way off.
After opening the door, carefully inspect the hook. The hooks on LG washing machines are quite durable and rarely break, but the springs that keep them moving often break. If the door won't open due to a broken hook, it's worth disassembling the door, replacing the spring, and completing the repair. This type of damage is a five-minute fix, even for someone who doesn't know which side of a screwdriver to use.
If the door is working properly, and the breakdown occurred due to problems with the door locking system, you will have to climb into the washing machine body again. Check if the machine is plugged into the power supply and then proceed.
- To the right of the washing machine door, we see a door lock opening and two screws next to it, one at the top and one at the bottom. Both screws need to be removed.
- Open the hatch door as wide as possible, then take a flat-head screwdriver, bend back the edge of the hatch cuff and try to find the clamp that holds it in place.
- There is a spring at the bottom or top of the clamp, pry it up with a screwdriver, bend it down and remove the clamp.
- Slide the door seal inside the drum to ensure it doesn't interfere with operation. A gap will open on the right between the front wall of the LG machine and the edge of the drum. Carefully remove the door seal through this gap.

Please note: When removing the door lock, be careful not to accidentally disconnect the power wires.
- We take a multimeter and test the power supply wiring, and then the locking device. If the part is faulty, we disconnect the wiring, remove the old device, and install the new one in its place.
- We push the new UBL into place, having first connected the wiring to it, and screw the UBL to the front wall of the case.
That's it, all that's left is to test the new door lock. In rare cases, the problem isn't with the door lock or the lock, but with the control module of the LG washing machine. In this situation, you'll need to call a technician to diagnose the problem and repair the machine's electronics. Don't attempt to access the control module yourself. We wish you a successful repair!
