The door of the Indesit washing machine won't open.
Normally, the door of an automatic washing machine remains locked for a few minutes after the wash cycle is complete. This is because the metal plate in the door lock needs to cool. Only then will the lock engage, allowing the door to be opened. If the door of an Indesit washing machine won't open even after half an hour, there's likely a malfunction. Let's figure out how to fix the problem and remove your washed items.
Options for removing laundry
Before you begin repairing, you need to remove the clothes locked inside. Washing machine manufacturers recommend waiting about 5 minutes before attempting to remove laundry from the drum.
But if after an hour from the end of the program the machine does not open, you should take action.
Let's look at a common situation: the washing machine won't open the door because there's still water in the drum. What should you do in this situation? Try restarting the "Rinse," "Drain," or "Spin" cycles.
Wait for the machine to complete its program, then try opening the door again. If it's locked and the drum is still full of water, you'll need to check the drainage system. Inspect the drain hose; it may be clogged. If so, clean it with a special cleaner. Then reconnect the drain hose and try draining the drum using one of the above-mentioned modes.
Sometimes the washing machine simply doesn't respond to user commands. Therefore, the tank can't be drained automatically. You'll have to do it manually, through the waste filter. The procedure is as follows:
Cover the floor around the filter with dry rags and place a low container on them;
open the hatch at the bottom of the washing machine;
unscrew the filter element cap;
collect the water flowing out of the resulting hole.
Next, you need to unlock the door lock yourself. Prepare a thin rope and a knife. Place the rope between the door and the washing machine body where the lock is located and press it in with the tip of the knife. Pull the rope in both directions until you hear a click, after which the door will swing open easily.
If the rope doesn't open the drum, you can try a more complex method. Unplug the machine, unscrew the bolts securing the top cover, and remove it. Then, reach through the open top of the washing machine to the door lock. Feel the locking tab and slide it. This will open the washing machine.
Possible malfunctions
Water remaining in the drum after a wash cycle isn't the only factor causing the door to lock. An Indesit washing machine can malfunction for several reasons. The most common issues are:
A broken hatch handle. This problem is far from uncommon, especially in families with small children;
Door lock malfunction. Due to natural wear and tear, the mechanism may fail. However, this problem is typical for machines that have been in use for several years;
Incorrect electronics. For example, the pressure switch that measures the amount of water in the tank may signal that the drum is full, when in reality the tank is empty. In this case, repair will involve replacing the level sensor.
If you can't figure out why the door won't open after washing, it's best to contact a service center.
If water remains in the drum after spinning, cleaning or replacing components of the drainage system may be necessary. If the machine's "brain" is interpreting signals incorrectly, replacing the sensors, repairing the control board, or the wiring connecting the components will be necessary.
We check and change the UBL
A common cause of inability to open a washing machine drum is a faulty door lock. To check the mechanism, you'll need to remove it. Follow these steps:
unplug the washing machine;
open the hatch;
bend back the sealing cuff, loosen the latch and remove its outer clamp;
pull the rubber band to the left - this way you will see the locking device;
unscrew the two bolts holding the lock;
Release the latches and remove the blocker.
Once you have the UBL in your hands, you can begin diagnosing it. To check the hatch locking device, you will need a multimeter and a lock diagram.
You can only diagnose the heating element, which is designed to heat the plates, yourself. Set the multimeter to resistance measurement mode. Place the tester probes on the neutral and live contacts of the door lock. If the device displays a three-digit number, the door lock is working properly. Next, place the multimeter probes on the neutral and live contacts. If the tester displays "0" or "1," the door lock is faulty. If you need to replace the door lock, follow the installation procedure below:
connect the wiring to the new UBL;
place the device behind the wall of the washing machine housing and insert it into the lock hole;
tighten the fixing bolts;
straighten the cuff, put the clamp back in place.
Now you know what to do if your washing machine door won't open. First, check that there's no water in the drum, then manually open the lock. Then, proceed to troubleshooting the machine's components.
