Why doesn't the dryer work in my washing machine?
Washer-dryers are often a lifesaver, especially in small apartments where hanging wet laundry to dry is problematic. However, a washing machine dryer that doesn't work can seriously ruin your plans and put you in a difficult situation. What should you do in such a situation?
This is not related to a breakdown
First, you need to calm down and not panic. Often, a dryer won't turn on because the user has simply made a mistake. This can lead to certain operational issues, but they're all easily resolved and don't require professional repair. What could have happened?
Firstly, dryers don't automatically dry on any program. The appropriate mode must be activated, and if this isn't done, the laundry will remain damp after the cycle.
Secondly, people often forget that you shouldn't load the machine to the maximum capacity if you want to dry the laundry after washing. A good guide is to load the machine to 2/3 of the maximum capacity. If the drum is designed for 5-6 kg of laundry, load 3-4 kg for drying. Starting a separate drying program won't help; the drum will weigh the laundry and signal the machine not to activate it. The only solution is to separate the washed laundry and dry it in batches.
Third, a clogged drain filter could be the cause of the malfunction. The machine only starts drying clothes once all the water has drained, but with a clogged drain filter, this is impossible. How to solve this? Unplug the washing machine, drain any remaining water from the hose, locate the filter hidden in a small hatch in the lower right corner, remove it, and rinse it thoroughly.
The drying element has failed.
If you've inspected and ruled out all the above issues, the dryer fan is faulty, and repairs are essential. Without the fan, hot air won't reach the drum, making drying impossible. What could go wrong with the fan?
- The grease on the fan bearing has dried out.
- A foreign object has blocked one or more blades.
- The fan motor has failed.
Important! In all three cases, you can repair the impeller yourself, especially if you have experience working with electronics. You'll need to either lubricate the bearing, remove any debris that's interfering with the impeller, or replace the motor.
Sometimes the washing machine simply displays an error code instead of starting the drying cycle. This indicates a signal interruption in the wiring or contacts, not in the power circuit within the fan or heating element. In this case, either the fan isn't blowing hot air into the dryer chamber, or the heater isn't raising the air temperature, and the laundry isn't drying. Resoldering the contacts or replacing the entire wiring can resolve the issue.
Sometimes a clogged air duct can cause a malfunction. It connects the casing with the heating element to the washing machine's drum. When this problem occurs, the fan circulates air, but after heating, the blockage prevents it from reaching the drum and drying the laundry. A typical sign of this problem is a loud hum from the fan. Repair is not necessary; simply clearing the blockage is sufficient.
