Gorenje washing machine not working
Why might a Gorenje washing machine stop working? There are many possible causes. If you put them all together, you'd end up with a list of one to two hundred possible causes. To identify the problem, you'll need to have the washing machine diagnosed.
What should I do if my Gorenje washing machine isn't working? How do problems manifest themselves? What are the most common faults found in machines from this Slovenian brand?
Typical malfunctions and their manifestations
Why does my washing machine break down and stop washing? The cause may be a violation of operating rules, power surges in the electrical network, natural wear and tear of parts, or a manufacturing defect. You can narrow down the range of malfunctions by knowing how your washing machine behaves during each one. Therefore, the first thing to do is to evaluate the behavior of your "home helper."
It is very important to evaluate the "behavior" of the washing machine - this will help narrow down the range of possible malfunctions.
If the washing machine turns on, but you can't start any programs, what could be the problem? Check:
- inlet valve;
- hatch locking device;
- motor;
- electronic module;
- shut-off valve at the inlet to the washing machine.
First, check that the water supply valve is open. The machine may simply be unable to fill, which is why it won't start washing. The solution is to turn the shut-off valve to the correct position.
Other problems are more serious and often require repair. However, most of them can be resolved independently, without the help of a technician. Let's figure out what to do in each situation.
The valve often “suffers”
One of the typical problems with Gorenje washing machines is a faulty inlet valve. This can manifest itself in various ways. Initially, the detergent isn't completely rinsed out of the drawer, and the machine takes longer than usual to fill. Later, the cycle may not start at all, and the washing machine stops working.
Before beginning the diagnostics, be sure to unplug the washing machine and turn off the water supply. Then, walk around the machine and disconnect the inlet hose from the rear of the machine. Next, remove the top cover.
Repairing the intake manifold is impractical. It's better to purchase and install a similar part. The solenoid valve is inexpensive. Components are selected for the specific Gorenje washing machine model.
How is the replacement performed? Simply disconnect the wiring and hoses from the faulty element, pull it out of the housing, and secure the new valve in place. Reconnect the contacts and hoses as before. After that, you can run a test wash.
The problem is in the lock
Another common problem that prevents a Gorenje washing machine from starting a wash cycle is the door lock. To diagnose the door lock, you'll need to open the door. Sometimes, the door gets locked in the closed position. The first step is to open the door.
If the washing machine hatch is locked in the closed position, it is necessary to:
- de-energize the machine;
- remove the top panel of the case;
- tilt the washing machine back so that the tank moves away from the front wall of the housing;
- put your hand through the resulting hole and reach the lock;
- feel the "tongue" of the lock and move it to the side.
After this, the hatch will open. Next, you can begin replacing the lock. Here's how:
- remove the outer clamp holding the hatch cuff (to do this you need to loosen the fastening of the metal rim);

- tuck the sealing rubber inside the drum;
- remove the wiring from the blocker (it’s better to take a photo of the connection diagram before doing this);
- unscrew the two bolts holding the door lock;

- remove the locking device from the washing machine housing.

The next step is to diagnose the door lock system. It's necessary to examine the lock's wiring diagram. If the Gorenje washing machine manual doesn't provide this information, you'll have to search the internet.
What exactly do you need to understand? The location of the UBL contacts. It's important to know where the live, neutral, and common terminals are. Without understanding the wiring diagram, it's impossible to properly diagnose the UBL.
Next, the UBL is tested with a multimeter. Here's the procedure:
- switch the device to resistance measurement mode;
- Place one probe of the multimeter on the neutral contact of the device, and the second on the phase;

- evaluate the readings on the tester screen - there should be a three-digit number;
- Place the probes against the neutral and common contacts of the lock;
- Look at the readings the multimeter gives (if 0 or 1, the UBL is faulty).
Replacement is done in reverse order. First, purchase a new door locking device for your specific Gorenje washing machine model. Next, secure the lock in place and connect the wiring to it.
Then straighten the drum seal and reinstall the clamp holding it in place. Next, run a test wash. If the door locks, the machine will begin operation.
The problem lies in the electric motor
Another reason why a Gorenje washing machine cannot start washing is a broken motor. Motors for washing machines Gorenje very reliable and break down extremely rarely. If there is a malfunction, then most likely it is just worn out electric brushes.
Motor brush wear is inevitable. Over time, the graphite rods wear down and require replacement. This typically occurs after 3-5 years of use. The job is simple and can be done independently, without calling a technician.
How does a washing machine behave when the motor fails? The main symptom is the machine's inability to spin the drum. Also, unusual noises at the beginning of the cycle and a burning smell should be cause for concern.
How to get to the Gorenje washing machine engine:
- Place the washing machine so that you have free access to the rear part of the housing;
- remove the top cover of the case;
- remove the rear service panel of the washing machine by unscrewing all the screws that secure it;

- remove the drive belt;

- remove the bolts that secure the motor;

- disconnect all wires from the engine;
- remove the electric motor from the holders by pulling it towards you, then pull it out of the machine;

- Inspect the motor brushes; if they are worn out, replace them.
Washing machine motor brushes are always changed in pairs.
If the brushes are intact, the motor winding may have broken. This is extremely rare in Gorenje washing machines, but you shouldn't completely rule out the possibility. The motor is tested with a multimeter.
If the winding burns out, the entire motor will have to be replaced. The new motor is installed in the same way. First, it's secured with bolts, then the wiring is connected. Next, the drive belt is replaced and the washing machine housing is reassembled.
If your Gorenje washing machine won't turn on or won't let you select a program, you'll need to diagnose the control module. The electronic control unit monitors all the machine's components. If the circuit board is damaged, the washing machine won't be able to start a cycle. If this problem occurs, it's best to contact a service center.
