Whirlpool washing machine error E01
The self-diagnostic system found in modern Whirlpool washing machines helps users narrow down the problem and understand how to repair their "home helper." A breakdown of error codes is provided in the machine's manual. Let's explore what the E01 error means and how to resolve the issue.
The meaning of the specified code
In fact, there is no need to be afraid of this designation. In 80% of cases there is an error E01 indicates a breakdown of the door locking device or a problem with the loading door mechanism. The washing machine will display a code if the door lock fails to engage or the door is not fully closed. Error E01 may also occur due to a break in the circuit, for example, if the power supply wire to the locking device is disconnected or the connector is dislodged.
Troubleshooting will be more difficult if the control module fails. In 20% of cases, the error code is displayed due to a faulty connection between the control module and the door lock system. Repairing the main control unit requires training and specific knowledge. If you don't have electronics skills, it's best to hire a specialist to repair the module.
Necessary actions
If you see the E01 error on the display, you should diagnose the control board. Before starting, unplug the Whirlpool washing machine. Then, you can remove the board from the housing and inspect it. A damaged component on the board is usually visible to the naked eye.
First of all, inspect the Z0103 triac; it can literally “explode” on the board due to small voltage surges.
Next, inspect the pair of resistors in the circuit: R9 (1 kOhm) and R36 (470 Ohm). If the problem is with a faulty triac, you'll have to remove it and replace it, along with the resistors described above. It's a good idea to take your time during this process, and also clean and solder the tracks on the control board. This will improve contact between the components.
Replacing the sunroof locking device may help resolve the issue. The ZV-446 hatch locking device is the one that often fails. If you simply clean the part of the device and reinstall it when doing the repair yourself, the E01 error will inevitably recur.
Replacement of UBL
If the problem is a worn-out hatch locking device, there's only one solution: replace the faulty part with a new one. It's best to visit a specialist store with the hatch locking device removed from the housing so the consultant can select a similar part for you. What should you do after purchasing the part? The procedure for replacing the locking device is as follows:
- Unplug the washing machine's power cord from the electrical outlet (for personal safety, as you will be working with components that carry current);
- Tuck the seal around the hatch into the drum. To do this, loosen the metal clamp holding the seal in place. A standard flat-head screwdriver will help release the clamp's latch. You don't have to tuck the seal all the way in; just pull back the section on the hatch door side.
- Disconnect the door locking device. This is easy: just remove a couple of bolts holding the mechanism in place, pull the door locking device slightly toward you, and disconnect the wires leading to the element.
The blocking device is dismantled. The removed element is assessed for the need for partial repair or complete replacement. Only thermal blocking devices can be repaired. These can be bimetallic or flag-type. The flag can be replaced with a new one; if the plate fasteners are loose, they must be tightened. It is also advisable to clean the plate to improve contact.
It will not be possible to repair any other part of the mechanism. Washing machine manufacturers release locking devices to the market exclusively as complete assemblies, without selling individual components of the locking device. Therefore, you will have to buy a new, working mechanism and connect it to the designated place.
You can try to assemble one working UBL from several broken ones, but you should understand that such a locking device will not last long.
The working door locking mechanism is reinstalled, and the previously removed wiring harness is connected to it. The mechanism is secured with mounting bolts. Next, straighten the seal on the Whirlpool washing machine and tighten the retaining clamp. If everything is done correctly, replacing the door locking mechanism should clear the E01 error. The washing machine will now lock the door and begin filling the tank with water.
