Error E03 in a Zanussi washing machine

Error E03 in a Zanussi washing machineModern washing machines, in addition to numerous additional features—leak protection, steam washing, and self-drying—also feature a self-diagnostic system. This system allows the machine to detect malfunctions and notify the user via an indicator or error code on the display. If a Zanussi washing machine displays the E03 code, it could indicate a malfunction in several components.

"Tricky" code

Why does the unit display error E03? The display code is very simple: "drain time exceeded." The drain system, consisting of the pipe, filter, and hose, is suspect. Drainage problems can also occur when the pump is clogged. Therefore, a good housewife tries to clear the drain line, clean the filter and hose with various chemicals, but this doesn't produce any results.

Let's try to understand the operating algorithm of the electronics that generates the E03 error code. The error occurs when the software module receives conflicting readings from components and sensors. And it’s not the drainage system that’s to blame, but the temperature sensor or heating element. In practice, the failure of these components of the Zanussi washing machine leads to the appearance of E03.

Cleaning the filter does not produce any results.

What and how to test?

If you suspect a malfunction, unplug the machine immediately. You won't be able to wash your laundry properly in cold water anyway, and the electronics will constantly freeze. Then, run a rinse or spin cycle. Once the cycle is complete, open the drum and remove the items. Now you can begin diagnostics and repairs:Zanussi SM control board test

  • reset error code;
  • disconnect the power cord from the outlet;
  • after 15 minutes, connect the machine back to the network;
  • If the error appears again, de-energize the equipment again, remove the back panel of the housing and free the heating element from the wires.
  • We remove the cover of the machine, take out the powder receptacle, unscrew the screws along the edges and ends of the control unit, then pull out the board along with the wires;
  • Next, you need to take a multimeter, set the value to 180-220 kOhm, and measure the resistor network on the software module;
  • The next step is to test the temperature sensor (it should respond to heating above 20 degrees with a resistance of 20 kOhm), the part is located at the back of the heating element housing.

Important! Observe safety precautions during manipulation!

Be sure to inspect the heating element's circuit board and relay circuit. If you see burnt-out elements, damaged tracks, or contacts, your washing machine requires repair. If you're unsure about repairing it yourself, it's best to entrust it to a service center.

We are looking for other “symptoms”

A malfunction doesn't necessarily manifest itself with a flashing indicator or a code on the display. Sometimes the self-diagnosis system can miss a problem, especially if the water temperature doesn't drop below 30 degrees Celsius. However, you can detect the problem yourself. Simply touch the door of your Zanussi washing machine 15-20 minutes after starting it on a high-temperature setting (60-90 degrees Celsius). If the heating element is faulty, the door will be cold—the washing machine simply won't reach the set water temperature. Heating may not occur for the following reasons.

  1. Consumer inattention (you selected the mode without heating the water).
  2. Heating element failure (the heater may overheat due to wear and tear or scale).

The heating element of a washing machine needs to be regularly descaled; special cleaning agents or citric acid are usually used for this purpose.

Zanussi's heating element burned out due to scale buildup.

  1. The temperature sensor is faulty. This component cannot be repaired. It's inexpensive, so it simply needs to be replaced with a new one.
  2. Broken wiring on the heater—you need to inspect the heating element for damaged or loose contacts. This problem is easy to fix yourself, but it can be difficult to detect.
  3. Pressure switch failure - if the level sensor fails, the control module will not receive a signal that the tank is full of water and will not transmit a command to heat the heating element.

Now you know what to do if your washing machine displays the E03 error. Don't panic in this situation—just follow the instructions above. You might be able to resolve the issue yourself.
