Error E16 in Candy washing machines

Error E16 in Candy washing machinesThe E16 error is rare in Candy washing machines. At least, you won't encounter the E16 code in the most common models, but that doesn't mean there aren't models with this code built into their self-diagnostic system. It's particularly common in Candy top-loading washing machines with a display, but let's not get ahead of ourselves; we'll cover everything in turn.

On a top-loading washing machine

Let's start with the Candy washing machine. It has a rare self-diagnostic system, which includes the E16 code we're interested in—the Candy CTD8766 washing machine. This is a rather stylish top-loading machine with electronic controls, a simple backlit display, and a maximum load capacity of 6 kg.

Candy CTD8766 with the E16 error code

Candy CTD8766 is not a new model, but it can still be easily purchased, as it can be found in all major retail outlets selling household appliances.

So what does the E16 code on this washing machine mean? The literal meaning is: "...a short circuit has occurred in the heating element circuit..." What does this mean?

  • The heating element of the washing machine simply burned out due to scale or a short circuit.
  • The wiring has burned out or the contacts have oxidized, which is why the heating element is not receiving power.
  • The control board's thyristor, which is responsible for the heating element, has failed.

E16 from the Candy washing machine manual

In rare cases, a short-term failure in the control board can cause such an error. You can fix this problem by resetting the washing machine. If turning it off and on again doesn't help, you'll need to resort to repairs, the details of which we'll discuss later.

On Aquamatic series washing machines

The Candy Aquamatic washing machine, of course, won't show you the E16 code because it doesn't have a display. Aquamatic models with a display also can't show this code because it's not integrated into their self-diagnostic system. However, Candy Aquamatics without a display do show error 16, which is essentially the same as the E16 error.

Error 16 also means a heating element malfunction (short circuit, open circuit, or damaged insulation), but recognizing this code isn't easy. To identify a specific error on a Candy washing machine without a display, count the number of flashes of the special indicator located in the lower left corner of the machine's control panel near the toggle switch. If the washing machine stops working and the indicator flashes 16 times, it means the machine is displaying error 16.

If you haven't had time to count the number of flashes of the corresponding indicator to determine the error code of the Candy Aquamatic series, restart the machine and it will repeat the series of flashes.

How to fix the error?

To fix the E16 error on a top-loading washing machine, you'll first need to check the heating element and its electrical connections. As usual, you'll need to open the housing and visually inspect the component, then test it with a special device—a multimeter. So, let's follow these steps.

  1. Disconnect the washing machine from the water supply, sewerage system and electricity, then pull it out and turn it so that its right side is facing you.
  2. We unscrew the two screws that hold the right side wall of the machine, and then move this wall to the side.
  3. Near the large pulley at the bottom of the tank, we see the heating element contacts, connected to a bundle of wires. However, working with the heating element is difficult because the drive belt is in the way. With one easy movement, we pull the belt off the pulleys.
  4. We take photos of the location of the wires so that we don’t forget how to connect them later.
  5. We remove the wires and inspect them, as well as the contacts, for melting or oxidation.
  6. We measure the resistance of the heating element with a multimeter.
  7. We take out the old heating element and put a new one in its place.
  8. We put the machine back together and connect it to the utilities – we’re ready to test it!

Heating element on Candy CTD8766

Candy series The Aquamatic is repaired in much the same way, but to get to the heating element, you will have to remove the back wall, not the side wall. If you are interested in other malfunctions of washing machines of this brand, read the publication Candy washing machine error codes.

In conclusion, we'd like to point out that the relatively rare E16 error can nevertheless be quite frustrating for Candy washing machine owners, especially considering how difficult it is to find its decoding online. However, we've tried to remedy the situation by writing this short article. We hope the information it contains will be helpful. Happy repairing!
