Error E20 in a Zanussi washing machine
If you notice an E20 error message while using your Zanussi washing machine, this indicates a problem with the wastewater drainage system. Let's find out what causes this type of damage and how to fix it yourself.
Why did this error occur?
The user will be notified of a malfunction in the drainage system by the error code E20, which will appear on the electronic display of the automatic machine. In addition to this indication on the screen, the Zanussi washing machine will emit a specific signal that will be repeated twice. Error E20 indicates that the washing machine is either unable to drain wastewater and spin the load, or the draining process is functioning properly, but a malfunction occurs directly in the program, which "freezes" because the machine's intelligence is not notified that the tank is empty.
Please note: Some Zanussi washing machine models display error codes E21 or C2 when damaged in this way.
Let's take a closer look at the types of damage that can occur to the wastewater drain system. A washing machine displays the E20 error code due to the following types of faults:
- blockage of the hose intended for draining water or the branch pipe;
- clogging and/or damage to the drain pump;
- defective liquid level sensor, its wiring;
- damage to the electronic board (isolated cases).
To restore your washing machine to its former working order, you don't need to call a service center; you can repair it yourself. Let's figure out what to do in this situation and how to troubleshoot the machine's malfunction.
Do-it-yourself repairs
If you notice your Zanussi washing machine is displaying the E20 error code, unplug it before attempting to diagnose the problem. First, disconnect the drain hose from the power supply and drain the water from the drum into a bathtub or other container. If the wastewater drains easily, it's likely there's a clog in the drain pipe that needs cleaning, or there's a blockage in the pump. After draining the drum, remove the laundry and continue inspecting the drainage system.
If the sewer pipe is in good condition, proceed to inspect the drain pump and filter. Remove the filter element, examine it carefully, place it under running water, and rinse thoroughly. The pump in Zanussi automatic machines can be accessed by removing the back cover of the housing. To do this, follow the following sequence of actions:
- Unscrew all the bolts holding the rear wall around the perimeter;
- remove the case wall;
- carefully detach the electrical wiring from the pump that goes to the pressure switch;
- unscrew the screw holding the pump, the bolt is located on the bottom of the washing machine;
- loosen the clamps located on the drain hose and the branch pipe;
- pull out the pump.
After removing the pump from your Zanussi washing machine, detach the hose from the tank. Inspect it carefully for damage, rinse it under running water, and clean the drain hose using a cleaning skewer. Then, move on to the pump.
To clean the pump, unscrew the cap and inspect the impeller. If you find any debris (such as threads, hair, or fur), clean the surface and wipe it gently. Next, check the part using a multimeter. Place the probes on the pump surface to measure the winding resistance; this should be 200 ohms. If the reading is not correct, the drain pump will need to be replaced.
Important! When disassembling the machine and disconnecting various wires and components, it's a good idea to take photographs of all stages of the work. This will help you reassemble the washing machine correctly once the repair is complete.
After completing the above steps with the drain pump, reinstall it, run a wash cycle, and observe the machine's operation. If the washing machine still displays the E20 error, the pump was working properly, and the problem lies elsewhere.
Start by checking the pressure switch and the wires that connect the fluid level sensor to the pump and electronic board. In most cases, the root cause is damage to the wiring, not the pressure switch.
If you've checked all the above components and the E20 error persists, you'll need to check the electronic module. This task is considered very complex and requires maximum concentration and attention. Even washing machine repair technicians are reluctant to attempt it. Typically, the circuit board isn't repaired; it's replaced with a new one, but this can be a significant drain on the family budget, as the part is quite expensive. However, it's worth noting that electronic module failures are isolated and extremely rare.
As you can see, you can identify the cause of the E20 error on your Zanussi washing machine's screen yourself. The unit should be inspected in stages, starting with the simplest and moving to the more complex. Don't immediately disassemble the machine and remove the pump if you haven't cleaned the drain filter in 2-3 years. Check it first, as this could be the root cause of the problem. By the way, don't forget about preventative measures: by maintaining your machine daily, using only automatic detergent, using water softeners, and washing items in a special bag, you can prevent clogs and problems with the drain system.

Hello everyone, I had an E20, removed the pump. If the valve is barely turning, then disassemble and clean the rotor. There's a lot of stuff on it, wash it directly in hot water with soap. I washed it with an old toothbrush. I wiped it down, dried it, reassembled it, and everything worked! All the best!
Thank you!
