Error E3 in a Bosch washing machine

Error E3 in a Bosch washing machineThe likelihood of encountering the E3 error code on a Bosch washing machine is low. The vast majority of users don't encounter this code for 7-10 years, but occasionally the code does appear on the display. It's important to understand what the code means and how to fix it. A quick reference guide to the code, step-by-step instructions, and expert advice will help.

What triggered the code's appearance?

Before deciding who's to blame and what to do, it's important to understand what's causing the error. The E3 error message appears on a Bosch when there's a problem closing the door. The manufacturer's instructions explain the error as follows: "The washing machine door does not close, does not lock, or there is no signal indicating that the locking mechanism has been successfully activated."

If your Bosch washing machine is not equipped with a display, the self-diagnostic system will report a problem using a corresponding indicator – flashing LEDs on the dashboard.

However, in reality, E3 has a more varied manifestation. It can conceal many more malfunctions and failures. Typical causes of this error include:

  • the hatch is not closed tightly, which is why the hatch locking device (HLD) does not work;
  • the door was not locked carefully (after strong pressure);UBL didn't work
  • the hatch is closed, but the electronic lock was not activated due to a mechanical malfunction of the UBL;
  • the electronic part of the blocker is broken;
  • The control board lost contact with the door locking device because the semiconductor on the module burned out.

In more than half of E3 cases, the door locking mechanism is to blame. The second most common is a faulty door locking system. Electronic system malfunctions round out the top three. We'll explain what each type of malfunction includes and how to fix them below.

Mechanical problems with the door

There are several reasons why the door won't close tightly. The most common and common one is that something is blocking the door. Specifically, an item, hair clip, or other foreign object may be stuck in the gap between the seal and the edge of the drum. The solution is simple: simply inspect the machine carefully and remove any obstructions.

If E3 appears, it is recommended to check the hatch cuff: the rubber may be damaged or a foreign object may be stuck in it.

Often, the cuff itself interferes with closure. This occurs in three situations:the door doesn't close because of the cuff

  • a non-original seal is installed;
  • when replacing the cuff, it was tightened incorrectly or the clamps were not fastened properly;
  • The rubber band has broken, and the loose piece falls into the gap between the body and the hatch, preventing the door from closing.

If the problem is a damaged rubber seal or a non-original part, you'll need to purchase a new seal and repeat the replacement. A botched repair can be repaired in the same manner. If everything has been replaced correctly and the sunroof still won't close, sand the edges of the seal. Most likely, a protrusion or other interfering defect is to blame.

Sometimes, door failure occurs after careless closing. For example, the hatch on a Bosch appliance might have been poorly locked for a long time, so the user would regularly apply force, either by pushing or slamming it. As a result, the locking mechanism hook, which should be spring-loaded and move with tension, becomes displaced and doesn't engage with its groove. To fix the situation, you need to disassemble the door, open the lock and repair it.

Blocking device

According to statistics, every third E3 case is related to the door lock. The electronic door lock provides additional protection, preventing it from opening accidentally during washing. The device can fail for several reasons:

  • the UBL mechanism is broken (it is not recommended to repair the device, it is better to replace it with a new one);
  • the electrical part is faulty (to check, we ring the device with a multimeter);
  • The eyeliner connected to the UBL has come loose or become damaged.The door lock needs to be replaced

Repairing a faulty door lock is practically useless. It's better to save time and effort and buy a new one. Ideally, look for an alternative made entirely from genuine Bosch parts. Then, remove the old lock and replace it with a new one, following this procedure:

  • disconnect the washing machine from the utilities;
  • open the hatch door;
  • we find the lock hole on the right and unscrew the two bolts holding the UBL;
  • we insert the cuff into the drum as deeply as possible, and try to pull out the blocker through the freed gap;

When disconnecting the UBL, be careful not to damage the wiring connected to the device!

  • disconnect the "plug" with wires;
  • inspect the blocker for integrity, and then test it with a multimeter.

Once the problem is resolved, replace the door lock and seal, paying particular attention to the wiring. Then, run a test wash. If the door closes and the diagnostic system remains silent, you've done everything correctly.

Problems with electronics

If the E3 error code persists after diagnosing the door and locking system, we recommend checking the wiring for a break. If this is also clear, the problem lies with the control board. Most likely, one of three issues has occurred:

  • the semiconductor on the module that is responsible for the Bosch self-diagnostic system has broken down (another option is that the corresponding track has burned out);
  • the element connecting the electronic unit and the blocker has burned out (the “track” is often damaged as well);
  • another important component of the module failed.let's check the module

Diagnosing and repairing the board on your own is virtually impossible. It's necessary to carefully test each module component and check the system using specialized equipment. One careless movement can worsen the situation, leading to a fatal outcome of the equipment.

It is highly recommended not to attempt to diagnose or repair the control board yourself; it is safer to contact a service center.

Fixing the E3 code at home is possible, but difficult. The key is to take your time, follow the instructions, and if you're having trouble, contact a service center for professional help.
