Error F01 in an Ariston washing machine
On Hotpoint-Ariston washing machines or older Ariston models, the F01 error code occurs on all units, both with and without a display, and has roughly the same meaning. Deciphering the error code is usually straightforward, but in a specific situation, it can be difficult to pinpoint the cause. In this article, we'll try to sort this out and provide the most reliable information regarding the F01 error.
Code options
First, let's figure out the different possible variations of error code F 01. In this case, washing machine manufacturer Ariston hasn't prepared any surprises for us. If the machine has a display, then in approximately 85% of models, the corresponding failure will cause error F01 to appear, and in 15% - F1.
There are simply no other code variants on Ariston washing machine models with a display, for which we are very grateful to the manufacturer. This makes it easier to decipher the error.
If your Ariston washing machine doesn't have a display, recognizing the F01 error is a bit more difficult, but with the right knowledge, any user can handle it. What are the possible solutions?
- On Hotpoint-Ariston AQSL washing machines, the F01 error will be indicated by a steadily flashing temperature indicator, which
is located at the very bottom of the control panel. - Hotpoint-Ariston Low-End will transmit the F01 code by flashing the key light or by lit function lights located horizontally.
- On AVSL line machines, this code is transmitted by the blinking of the extra rinse indicator and, at the same time, by the rapid blinking of the light indicating that the door is locked (key).
- And finally, older models of Ariston Margherita washing machines give the F01 signal via a constantly lit “Key” indicator and a rhythmically flashing power-on indicator.

What does the code mean?
We've managed to figure out the F01 code variants, now let's move on to decoding it. Error code F01, as well as F1, means a failure in the electrical circuit that controls the motor. This rather dry formulation won't tell a layman anything about the malfunction. If we were to describe the error in more detail, we'd have to say that the control module is sending signals to the engine but isn't receiving a response. This means there are three potential situations:
- the control board itself has failed and therefore the commands it sends are incorrect;
- the engine is broken, which means it is simply unable to respond to commands from the control board;
- The problem occurred in the path between the engine and the control module (wiring or contacts).
At first glance, the decoding sounds quite scary, hinting at a serious breakdown, but in reality, things may be much simpler, as this error often occurs as a result of a local failure in the electronic module. Such a failure can be fixed in a few minutes.
On 99% of Ariston washing machines, the F01 code has the same meaning. But, as we know, there are exceptions to every rule. In our case, the Ariston AD series has a slightly different self-diagnostic system, in which this error indicates a loss of communication between the electronic module and the control panel display module. In other words, this error indicates that the control module is losing its ability to communicate with the control panel, causing the latter to behave erratically.
In fact, in the Ariston AD line washing machine, error code F01 is, in terms of decoding, a complete analogue of error F12, which occurs in absolutely all other models of Ariston washing machines.
Eliminating the causes of the code's appearance
Let's move on to the most difficult part – finding and eliminating the causes of the F01 or F1 code. Our technicians recommend starting with the simplest possible causes, gradually moving on to the most complex (those requiring disassembly of the washing machine).
First, you need to check the Ariston washing machine's control module for a local failure. This is very simple: unplug the power cord from the 220V outlet for 5-7 minutes, then plug it back in and try starting your "home assistant." If rebooting doesn't resolve the issue, try rebooting the machine a couple more times. In rare cases, a local failure can be resolved with two or even three reboots.
An indirect cause of Ariston washing machine motor malfunction may be low power supply voltage. This is a common occurrence in small towns and villages. Ariston machines don't always respond to such a drop with the F01 error, but it's worth checking, as power supply problems can lead to very serious damage to the washing machine. In general, if you experience frequent power supply drops in your home, you should purchase a replacement. voltage stabilizer for a washing machine and connect your “home assistant” to it, this will simply save her.
Next, you need to take a special device called a multimeter and check the integrity of the power cord and the outlet. Of course, the chances that this error is caused by the power cord or outlet are slim, but they are still possible, and it wouldn't hurt to check, especially since it's quick. Once we've ruled out all the simple causes, let's look inside.
- Somewhere in the room, if there is no possibility to drag the washing machine into the garage or shed, we will free up some space so that nothing interferes with the repair and move the washing machine there.
- Let's take out the powder receptacle and put it aside.
- We unscrew the screws that hold the back wall of the Ariston washing machine.
- We remove the drive belt that is in our way.
- We take a photo of the location of the wires on the engine and remove them.
- We unscrew the engine mounts and then pull it off.
After removing the motor, we must first check its brushes and then the windings. We will also need to check for any leaks into the housing. Here's what to do:
- on the sides of the motor housing we find small screws that hold the brushes and unscrew them;
- we take out the brushes and inspect them; if at least one is worn out, we change both;
- We place the multimeter probes on the winding and begin systematically checking the turns for breakdown;
- If everything is fine with the winding, we check if there is a leak on the housing.
If you manage to find a breakdown in the winding or a leak on the housing, feel free to throw the motor away, since repairing such a thing is comparable in price to the cost of a new part.
If the engine is OK, we begin methodically checking the wiring that powers the motor with a multimeter. We disconnected it earlier. In this case, we recommend checking each transaction 2-3 times to avoid errors, otherwise you will have to start all over again.
The control board is checked last. We traditionally advise against attempting to touch this component yourself, as without the necessary qualifications, you could easily damage it, which would be a much more expensive repair with all the ensuing consequences. It's far better to entrust this task to a professional. Ultimately, you'll save yourself stress, energy, time, and possibly even money!
In conclusion, if your Ariston washing machine suddenly displays the F01 error code, don't panic. Read our article and hope the control module is intact. Happy repair!
