Error F02 in an Ariston washing machine
Error F02 is common to all Ariston washing machine models. This error is easily one of the most common, but it doesn't always indicate a serious malfunction; it depends on the specific situation. Let's explore the meaning, causes, and consequences of error F02 together.
How does the code manifest itself?
Ariston washing machine, of course, isn't the only one of its kind. Within the Ariston brand, there are several dozen models of washing machines, each of which may exhibit this error in its own unique way. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean the Ariston self-diagnostic system isn't standardized—quite the contrary. Each model simply has its own nuances regarding how information is displayed on the display or control panel. Simply put, this error, while having the same basic content, may manifest itself in different ways.
On Ariston washing machines with a display, this error may be displayed as F02 or F2.
Well, with washing machines with displays, everything is clear; there are only two code display options. But what if your Ariston model doesn't have a display? Where should the information be displayed? The answer is obvious: on the control panel, and the indicator lights will help.
- Ariston of the Margherita line without a display will show the F error with the number 02 by means of the “key” light being lit, and
The network indicator will flash twice at intervals of several seconds (on average 10 seconds). - Ariston AVL and AML series washing machines indicate this error by a flashing LED “key” and a flashing light next to the “Quick Wash” mode.
- In Hotpoint-Ariston washing machines, the F02 code is displayed on the control panel by a flashing LED located opposite the "End" light or, if the control panel is in Russian, "End of Program." In some cases, all function indicators light up simultaneously with the "End" light.
- Aristons AQSL indicate an error with the code F 02 by blinking the LED located opposite the inscription 300C.
How does it stand?
Almost all Ariston washing machine manuals state that error code F with the specified numerical code is interpreted as a malfunction or breakdown of the tachometer, or an open circuit in the motor circuit, or a motor failure, as a result of which the control module cannot establish communication with the specified components.
As can be seen from the decoding, the malfunction that caused the F02 error may occur due to a breakdown:
- tachometer;
- engine;
- power supply wiring and contacts;
- control module.
In 67% of cases, the F02 code is caused by the tachometer or engine. In 18% of cases, the wiring and contacts are to blame, and only in 15% of cases is the control module to blame.
We find and fix problems
Since we have service center statistics on Ariston washing machine malfunctions to help us prioritize troubleshooting, let's start with the tachometer and motor. But first, let's check if anything has gotten into the drum or jammed it. To do this, rotate the drum by hand. If it rotates relatively freely, we rule out this problem.
A tachometer is a special module installed on the engine that measures its RPM during operation. It transmits this information to the control module. Incidentally, this module may be called a tachometer, a Hall sensor, or a tachogenerator.
Ariston washing machines most often have a commutator motor, meaning they have brushes that periodically wear out, causing error code F02. To check this, you need to access the motor.
- It is necessary to unscrew the fasteners of the rear wall of the CM housing and remove the wall.
- Next you need to remove the drive belt.
- Remove the connector with wires from the engine.
- Loosen the motor bolts, push it back a little, then pull it down – the motor will come out.
Unscrew the bolts and remove the brushes. If your Ariston washing machine has been in use for more than 3-5 years, the brushes should be loose. Remove them, inspect them, and replace them with new ones. If the brushes are in good condition, check the motor for breakdown on the housing and armature. We do this with a multimeter. After completing the repair and inspection of the washing machine motor, we move on to the tachometer.
Disconnect the Hall sensor contacts and remove it from the engine. Check the sensor with a multimeter. If it's intact, you can also check the inner surfaces of the sensor ring for corrosion. If not, we move on to checking the wiring and contacts. Return to the previously disconnected connector with the wires. First, check the tightness of each wire. Perhaps one is loose and needs to be clamped. Next, inspect the wires and contacts. If nothing unusual is visible, check them with a multimeter.
It's possible that after checking the engine, tachometer, and wiring, you won't find anything unusual. This should lead us to the conclusion that either you didn't check the above components thoroughly enough and missed something important, or the problem lies not with the tachometer, motor, or wiring, but with the control module. At this point, we suggest you stop your independent investigation and call an experienced mechanic.
Firstly, a technician has more experience working with washing machine electrical components and knows the nuances of the problem. Secondly, independently inspecting the control module could result in this expensive part ending up in the trash (precedents have happened). Thirdly, tinkering with the electronics of a washing machine on your own can result in a costly or even unrepairable problem. The final decision on this matter is yours; we have merely offered arguments to support the previously expressed opinion on self-repair of the electronic module.

In conclusion, the F02 code that suddenly appears on your Ariston washing machine's display indicates problems with various components. The only way to determine the exact problem is to open the machine and inspect the aforementioned components, including with a multimeter. Repairs may require purchasing a new motor or tachometer until you find the cause; you won't know what you need in advance. Happy repairing!
