Error F13 on an Ariston washing machine
Error code F13 is not found on budget Ariston washing machines: this combination indicates a problem with the drying function. This simplifies the process of decoding the error and allows for quick localization of the affected area. The difficulty is that there is little publicly available information on how to resolve the F13 error on Ariston machines. We propose filling this gap, decoding the error, and exploring repair options.
The manifestation of the cipher
Thanks to its self-diagnostic system, the Ariston washing machine automatically detects drying problems and alerts the user with a code or display. The display is simpler—the washing machine will pause and display the appropriate combination. A forced stop can occur at any stage of the cycle:
- the machine displayed “F13” when turning on the program and cancelled the start of the wash;
- the machine washed the clothes, but when it started drying, it showed an error and refused to dry the clothes;
- The machine started drying, but after a certain amount of time it displayed a code and froze.
Error F13 may appear before or during drying – it all depends on the cause of the problem.
If the model doesn't have a display, the self-diagnostic system will alert you to the problem through blinking lights. The frequency and amount of light varies depending on the Ariston brand.
- Ariston Margherita AL 108D and AL 128D models. These oldest machines in the manufacturer's lineup have only two lights—power and drying. If the latter malfunctions, the machine will flash 13 times quickly, with intervals of 7-15 seconds. The programmer will also activate at the same time, clicking and rotating counterclockwise.
- Ariston AML 105 and 109 series. On these washing machines, when the drying function malfunctions, three LEDs flash, indicating additional options. Only the second one from the bottom, usually "Quick Wash," will remain off. The "Key" light will also blink constantly.

- Hotpoint-Ariston Low-End models ARM XXL, CA WD, and AV DK. Here, the automatic transmission responds to F13 by flashing the temperature LEDs. Again, all but the second one are illuminated. The names of the "lights" on the instrument panel vary, but typically the trinity "No Heat," "40," and "50" are illuminated.
If your washing machine or dryer displays F13, there is no need to panic. It is better to first try to interpret the combination and clarify the nature of the problem. Let's figure out what might break further.
Let's decipher the code
To understand how to fix the F13 error, we need to take a closer look at the error. This code combination on the Ariston and Hotpoint-Ariston indicates a problem with the drying system. More specifically, the code is displayed when the temperature sensor is faulty. There are two possible scenarios: either the thermostat is open circuit or there is a short circuit. In either case, the board stops controlling the heating, the drying cycle is cancelled for safety reasons, and a code appears on the display.
It turns out that F13 directly indicates a faulty temperature sensor. It's impossible to accurately determine the nature and extent of the problem, identify the causes, and perform appropriate repairs without specialized equipment. Often, the user sees no reason to worry, as the device, when used as a multimeter, displays acceptable readings of 18-20 kOhm. However, the slightest movement due to vibrations during machine operation can cause the thermostat to shift, break, and cease functioning. In such cases, it's advisable to immediately contact a service center.
A working temperature sensor in normal mode should produce values of 18-20 kOhm.
Self-diagnosis is possible, but only in certain situations.
What to check first?
If the F13 error message appears for the first time, it's possible that there was a one-time malfunction in the control unit or the indicator system. You can take a risk and reset the machine: unplug the washing machine, wait 10-20 minutes, then restart the interrupted mode and observe the machine's behavior. A recurring error code indicates a faulty temperature sensor.
Trying to fix the F13 malfunction yourself is strongly discouraged. It's best to contact a service center immediately and have repair technicians perform diagnostics using specialized equipment. Otherwise, there's a high risk of worsening the problem, even leading to equipment failure.
Home repairs are only permitted if the user is familiar with the electronics of an Ariston washing machine. Then, you can check whether the contacts in the terminals from the temperature sensor to the electronic controller are secure. It is likely that the vibrations generated during washing have caused the connections between the wires to become loose.
If the F13 error is not due to a one-time malfunction or loose wiring, then you won't be able to fix the machine yourself - professional repair is required.
Malfunction options
When an Ariston+ washing machine fails to dry clothes and displays an F13 error, the temperature sensor is the culprit in 70% of cases. The device fails after an open or short circuit. The only solution is to replace the faulty part.
In the remaining 30%, other problems cause the error.
- A module firmware failure. Simply put, the board "forgets" the factory algorithm and is no longer capable of executing the embedded programs. To fix the problem, it is necessary to reprogram the electronic unit. Possible reflashing only on special equipment.
- Board failure. Another possibility is that the control module is broken. For example, the so-called traces are damaged, the resistors are burned out, or the controller is damaged. The nature of the fault will determine what to do during repair: restore contacts, replace radio components, or install a new unit.
- Damaged wiring. The wires running from the dryer sensor to the control module may have broken due to vibration or rodents. In any case, the connections must be repaired by replacing the wires.
Twisting and soldering the wiring on washing machines is prohibited – such connections are unreliable and dangerous!
It's worth mentioning that the F13 error code frequently occurs on Ariston dryers. This is due to the poorly designed machine, where the inlet hose is located directly above the circuit board. If there's a leak or heavy condensation, moisture gets onto the module, inevitably causing it to burn out. Therefore, it's not recommended to purchase dryers from this manufacturer. It's better to look for more durable and safer alternatives.
