Error F18 in an Ariston washing machine
Every washing machine has a series of error codes that appear on the display when a problem occurs. Some errors and their causes are easily remedied, but error code F18 on an Ariston washing machine is considered one of the most difficult to resolve. What should you do if you encounter it?
Code manifestation
Hotpoint Ariston models most often display this error before the wash cycle even begins: the drum doesn't spin, even though the laundry is loaded, the detergent is in place, and the door is tightly closed. However, there are situations where the F18 error appears at any stage of the wash cycle, including drying or spinning. In even rarer cases, the machine appears to be running, but the error code persists.
Please note! Ariston models with a commutator motor do not have the F18 error code; it only appears on the displays of devices with an asynchronous motor.
It's worth noting that not all Hotpoint Ariston washing machines are equipped with electronic displays. However, this doesn't prevent them from providing error alerts.
- Older models are equipped with only two indicators: the door lock indicator and the power indicator. In these machines, the F18 error is replaced by a series of specific actions: 18 bright flashes on the power indicator, parallel clicking sounds, and a clockwise rotation of the program selector knob.
- Newer models (including AV, AVL, AVTL, AVSL, and CDE) are equipped with more indicators, but still lack a display. In these washing machines, the error we're looking for is accompanied by the following symptoms: two indicators flashing simultaneously – the "Spin" and "Quick Wash"/"Extra Rinse" indicators. The name of the second indicator depends on the model; it is located second from the bottom in the row of additional functions. The lock indicator may also flicker.

- Low-End washing machines signal errors using other indicators. Most often, this involves the blinking of the second light from the top (Rinse) and the second from the bottom (End of Wash indicator). In some cases, all additional function indicators may light up, regardless of whether they are positioned vertically or horizontally on the panel (the pattern varies from model to model).
- Hotpoint-Ariston washing machines from the Aqualtis series signal malfunctions using the second and fifth temperature indicators from the bottom. Some models have only six temperature indicators, while others have five. In the first case, the "correct" indicators correspond to 30 and 60 degrees Celsius, while in the second case, they correspond to 30 and 90 degrees Celsius.
If you still have the manual for your washing machine, don't hesitate to check it. Manufacturers typically anticipate potential issues and describe how each error manifests itself.
The nature of the error
The above error code indicates a malfunction in the washing machine's electronic filling system, specifically a communication failure between the main processor of the electronic controller and the processor controlling the asynchronous motor drive (as mentioned above, only models with this type of motor display F18).
Since the problem lies in the electronic control module, finding and implementing a solution requires considerable experience working with microchips. Without this, troubleshooting the problem yourself will be virtually impossible.
But an error doesn't necessarily indicate a breakdown. Short-term technical glitches are also common. In such cases, getting the washing machine back up and running is a matter of five minutes. All you need to do is disconnect your home assistant from the power supply for a few minutes and then turn it back on.If the board is intact, the error code will disappear from the screen after this procedure. But if disconnecting the board doesn't help, then professional repairs are needed.
How to fix it?
If the problem is truly with the DSP or the overall controller, replacing individual components is not practical; the entire controller must be replaced. Repair is possible in the following situations:
- The controller firmware crashed. This is easily remedied; the component can be easily reprogrammed with specialized equipment;
- the power capacitor or optocoupler has failed - just buy a new part in the store and put it in place of the old one;
- If the contacts in the microcircuit's pins are faulty, knowledgeable people or electronics experts will resolder them to fix the problem.
Error code F18 is considered the most complex because it can only be fixed with specific knowledge and experience. If you decide to repair the board yourself, remember to practice electronic safety.
