Outdoor program in a Siemens washing machine
Some imported washing machines are adapted for Russian-speaking users before being released to the Russian market: all control panel text is translated into Russian. Machines from the German manufacturer Siemens, assembled for Europe, do not undergo this process, so the names of some modes and functions remain a mystery to the user. For example, what is the purpose of the Outdoor mode on a Siemens washing machine?
Purpose and features of Outdoor mode
A quick glance at the user manual reveals the translation of this mode's name and purpose. In fact, the word could be translated into Russian as "Impregnation," and the mode is therefore intended for either sportswear with a water-repellent finish or waterproof outerwear. This program requires a special liquid detergent, which is poured into the main compartment of the washing machine. When washing in this mode, the drum is loaded only half of the maximum load.
The Outdoor cycle is medium-duration, and its exact duration is determined by the Siemens washing machine model and the user's settings. By default, washing takes place at a temperature of 30-40 degrees Celsius. Rinsing is performed with a large amount of water, and the drum alternately rotates and pauses during the wash cycle. Spinning is either disabled completely or available at low speeds.
Please note: Even if your washing machine has a drying function, waterproof items must be air-dried, so you won't be able to use the drying function or tumble dryer.
Care instructions for treated clothing
Sportswear with a coating is also called "breathable" because the membrane it's made from has a porous structure. This type of fabric allows sweat to escape freely without creating a greenhouse effect inside. This material is quite sensitive, so there are a few things to know about caring for it, such as:
- temperature conditions;
- automatic washing possibility;
- ironing possible.
So, you can machine wash treated fabric, but be very careful, with plenty of water, and at a low temperature (30-40 degrees Celsius). Spinning is not recommended. Do not use chlorine-containing products or bleach! Dry cleaning with special chemicals is permitted.
As for drying, using a tumble dryer is generally acceptable if you reduce the drying time and set the minimum temperature, but drying in the drum of a washing machine strictly contraindicated.
This fabric also needs to be ironed carefully, at a temperature no higher than 110 degrees, using a fabric lining and without using steam.
Sportswear must be cared for carefully at all stages. If there is no serious contamination, you can use soapy water and a soft brush to remove stains. Afterwards, simply hang the item on a hanger and dry it in this position.
If you do use a washing machine, do not put other outerwear in with the soaked items to avoid damage. Preliminary preparation:
- empty all contents of pockets;
- remove fur elements;
- fasten zippers and buttons.
Why are common laundry practices unacceptable? For example, regular laundry detergent never dissolves completely, and the remaining particles clog the pores of the fabric. Chlorine-containing detergents destroy the fabric's structure. Spinning leads to deformation and tearing of the material. Using a hot iron and washing in hot water causes the pores to stick together.
How to wash clothes with impregnation?
We mentioned above that a special detergent for sportswear is needed, as regular powder won't do. Experts recommend several gels.
- Nikwax Tech Wash can be used for regular washing of membrane fabrics, as well as for removing individual stains in concentrated form.

- Granger's 30˚C Cleaner. At 30 degrees Celsius, it removes even the most stubborn stains.
- Perwolle Sport Active 3D. An excellent product without phosphates.
- Granger's Universal Spray Cleaner. Spray the spray onto the stained area from a distance of 10-15 cm. Then simply wipe the fabric with a cloth.
When choosing a gel, choose high-quality formulations from trusted companies. Be sure to include a label stating that it can be used on treated clothing.
