Resetting the washing machine
Resetting or restarting a washing machine may be necessary for various reasons. However, not many people know how to reset a washing machine.
Furthermore, many people wonder whether it's even possible to reboot the program, and whether this will affect the operation of the equipment. Let's look at all of this in more detail.
Why do you need to restart your machine?
Please note that within the scope of this article By the term "reboot" we mean only restarting the washing machine program. We won't discuss resetting the machine based on laundry weight, to avoid confusion. Resetting the washing machine may be necessary in a number of cases:
- Most often, the washing machine is restarted when there is a foreign object in the machine that is forgotten to be removed from the pockets of clothes, or when children put toys in the drum; in general, a quick stop of the machine and a restart of the program is required;
- Some require a restart when something needs to be reported to the machine;
- Sometimes you need to change the selected program, for example, you needed to set a delicate wash for woolen items, but you accidentally selected the “Cotton 70” mode0"After this, woolen items will definitely become unusable, so you can’t do without restarting them;
- A reboot is also necessary if the washing machine stops during the washing process due to a power outage. Some washing machine models will continue washing after the power is turned on and you can do without rebooting;
- and finally, a reboot of the machine may be required in case program freezes When the machine stops responding to signals, washing, and spinning clothes, it can sometimes malfunction. In some cases, this problem can be resolved by rebooting the system board.
Reboot instructions
Most washing machines don't have a reset button; the program start button usually performs this function. Just don't confuse this button with the on/off button.
Important! Before performing any operations on your washing machine, please refer to the instructions. The reset procedure may vary depending on the model.
So, if you need to turn off the machine in order to change the washing mode, you need to:
- hold down the program start button for 3-5 seconds;
- wait until the machine stops, some models of machines drain the water before stopping;
- carefully select the required mode;
- add powder to the detergent compartment if necessary;
- press the start button.
If there is a need to remove something from the machine drum or, conversely, add something, then restarting the machine will also be accompanied by draining the water. First, stop the machine by pressing the program start button for a few seconds, and then drain the water in one of the following ways:
- through a special hose near the drainage filter;
- through the drainage filter;
- Select the spin mode with the "No spin" function enabled. In 1-2 minutes, the washing machine will drain the water and stop, and the door will unlock.
If you drained the water yourself, you'll need to turn off the machine by pressing the power button and then unplugging it. Depending on the model, the door will unlock and open after 5-10 minutes. Once the item has been removed or added, restart the machine as usual.
Important! If you need to reset the washing machine, do not unplug the power cord without first turning it off. This could not only block the machine but also damage the system board, leading to costly repairs.
If the power goes out, unplug the power cord from the outlet to prevent a power surge while the machine is running and frying the control board. When the power comes back on, you can turn the machine back on. If the program hasn't automatically reset, the machine will continue washing. In some cases, the machine will drain and pause when turned on, after which you can restart the cycle.
If your washing machine has stopped working due to an internal failure and isn't responding to buttons on the control panel, temporarily unplugging it may resolve the issue. Restarting the system board may allow you to try turning it on again. However, you shouldn't resort to this method constantly; it's better to contact a specialist who will conduct an accurate diagnosis of the equipment and identify the malfunction, if any.
So, resetting your washing machine is quite simple. We've provided general instructions, but we still recommend reading your machine's manual. Good luck!

Thank you, kind people, for posting videos. Otherwise, I, a single mother, would have already gone broke on renovations.
You guys really saved the day!
I didn’t think I’d find instructions for this machine (my neighbors), but I found them the first time.
I need some advice! I have a Bosch Maxx5 (10 years old). After the water inlet fitting broke, the plumber placed the machine on the laundry bin. After fixing the problem, he turned on the spin cycle. The machine began pumping out water and spinning the drum. The illuminated "12:00" on the display changed to "0." I turned the machine off and set aside some laundry. The display doesn't turn on, the modes don't start, only the pump runs and that's it. Can you tell me what to check? Best regards!
The "Play" button is flashing. The machine is frozen. How do I restart it?
I need help with my Rosenlew RTT 4350 washing machine. How do I reset it?
Indesit WISE8 washing machine. It works fine on all programs, but at the end of the wash cycle, the display shows 001 minutes. The lock icon stays on, but the door opens. The "END" icon doesn't light.
Throw it away
Thank you so much for the helpful advice! God bless you. I thought my car was doomed after the neighbors flooded it.
How do I reset my Hotpoint Ariston VMSL 601 washing machine? It won't turn on; it just makes two clicks and that's it. Or it spins and stops. Help!

What should I do if all the lights on my Hansa 212 washing machine are on? Resetting via the start-pause function doesn't work? Please help.
After turning off the power, my Hansa Dynamic System Aquafresh machine froze: the "end" button stays lit, and when I try a new program, the "ready" button lights up and flashes, while the "end" button stays lit. Could you please tell me what to do?
Vestel f2wm 841 washing machine. All programs are malfunctioning: for example, "Quick Wash" – drains for 5 seconds, drains for another 5 seconds, fills with water, spins the drum twice for 3-4 seconds at maximum spin speed, drains, pauses for 2 minutes, door remains open, and the wash cycle is complete. Only the spin cycle works normally.
What should I do? My washing machine is frozen. It only washes, but it won't drain. There's probably something wrong with the program. I set it to drain, but it still washes. I don't know how to drain the water. I've already restarted it, but the program still won't change. It's a Hoover top-loading machine. Can you tell me what's wrong?
