Why is my washing machine leaking? Water is leaking underneath it!
A washing machine has become an integral part of the modern home. Using one is much more convenient than washing clothes by hand. It saves us time and effort. This means that by using it, we make our lives better. How nice it is not to have to do the laundry yourself. You can entrust this part of the household to a professional, while you enjoy more enjoyable activities or leisure. But unfortunately, there comes a time when any appliance breaks down.
Perhaps you noticed your washing machine leaking during or after a wash cycle. It's frustrating to see a puddle on the floor. And of course, this problem needs to be addressed. After all, no one wants to have to wipe down the floor after every wash cycle, removing accumulated moisture. Plus, sooner or later, you could flood your neighbors, which is the last thing we want. Therefore, it's essential to identify and eliminate the cause of your washing machine's leak.
If the machine is leaking, there may be several reasons. There are a wide variety of washing machine models available on the modern home appliance market. Different models may have different drawbacks and weak points that, over time, can cause breakdowns and leaks. Let's look at the most common ones, which are the most common sources of leaks.
Is there water under the washing machine? Check to see how much it is. And most importantly, make sure the problem is with the washing machine itself and not something else.
Causes of leaks
The pump (drain pump) may be leaking.
The tank may be leaking (cracked or punctured).
The integrity of the hoses is compromised (both the drain and inlet hoses may be damaged).
The damaged door seal is leaking.
The filler pipe connections are not tight.
The connecting pipes are not sealed inlet valve and the washing machine dispenser.
The gas tank seal is worn out.
The machine's dispenser hopper is clogged.
The tank drain pipe is leaking and is damaged.
We identify and eliminate faults
Before starting any repairs, you must de-energize the washing machine by unplugging it from the power outlet.
Then we need to understand from which point of our machine the water started leaking. Let's start by carefully inspecting it. By the way, did you notice at what point during the wash cycle our washing machine started leaking? It's important to know the answer to this question. It will significantly simplify the troubleshooting process. This approach will help us find one of three possible leak locations. The following water leaks are easily identified by visual inspection:
Inlet hose.
Drain hose
Washing machine door cuff.
And a dispenser hopper.
Hoses
Faulty hoses. Hoses often leak where they connect to the washing machine. To fix this, we can remove the hoses and replace the rubber seal.
If the drain hose itself has frayed or been accidentally punctured, you can restore its integrity using special glue and a rubber patch, but it would be better to simply replace it with a new one. If the inlet hose is punctured, we strongly advise against repairing it. Since it can be under quite a lot of pressure, it's easier to replace it. They're sold at plumbing supply stores and are fairly inexpensive.
Dispenser and hopper
Dispenser malfunction. The dispenser hopper (the recess where the detergent is poured) may be faulty. A leak can occur because it's clogged, or because of excessive water pressure in the pipes, or because of problems with the inlet valve.
In the latter case, you will be able to notice traces of drips under the place where it is located.
To eliminate the cause of the leak, we need to remove the dispenser and clean both the hopper and the dispenser. In some cases, an object gets stuck in the drain bin, preventing normal operation. If you find such an object, be sure to remove it from the machine.
After cleaning, check the washing machine's operation. Also, try reducing the water pressure by slightly closing the inlet valve.
If neither the first nor the second step resolves the issue, the inlet valve needs to be replaced. A faulty inlet valve can cause increased pressure during the rinse cycle.
If the problem is in the cuff
In some cases, leaks can be caused by a broken door seal. If the outer seal is damaged, you'll notice leaks coming from the front of the washing machine. If the inner seal is damaged, leaks will also come from the inside.
If the hole is small, you can fix it with waterproof glue and a rubber patch. It's also a good idea to remove the clamps that secure the seal and reposition the patch, moving it to the top of the sunroof. If the damage is extensive, it might be worth ordering a new seal and replacing the leaking one. Instructions for replacing the seal yourself are in the following video:
The tank filler pipe is leaking
The connection between the hose and the washing machine's tub may have become loose. To determine if this is the issue, inspect the tub. If there are water stains visible where the hose connects to the tub, then we've found the cause.
To repair it, we'll need to disconnect the hose. Then, remove any remaining adhesive, remove any moisture from the joint, and dry it. After that, we can reattach the hose, securing it with epoxy or a strong waterproof adhesive.
Intake valve pipe leak
We remove the top of the machine and thoroughly inspect the hoses. If we detect a problem with them, we'll fix it by replacing them.
If the tank is damaged
To inspect the washing machine, we need to tilt it to inspect the bottom. For a thorough inspection, you'll need to use a flashlight. Look for traces of water. If your washing machine loads top-loading, you'll need to remove the side panel for inspection.
Tank damage can occur for various reasons, such as plastic tanks breaking due to a solid object hitting them or a faulty heating element. If you notice a leak in the tank, it will need to be replaced.
Changing a fuel tank is a very complicated process. You might find it easier to contact a professional.
If the oil seal is faulty
The washing machine's drum seal wears out periodically. Typically, if the seal is faulty, you'll notice a leak during the spin cycle. To confirm this, inspect the drum. If you notice traces of water leaking from the bearings, both the seal and the bearings themselves will need to be replaced.
The drain pipe is leaking
If the tank drain hose is leaking, you'll need to seal it with rubber or replace it. It's located at the bottom of the machine and connects the tank to the pump (drain pump).
The pump is leaking
If the drain pump is leaking, it's easier to replace. Video instructions for replacing the pump (drain pump):
Samsung top-loading washing machine, 2001 model. To save money, I connected it directly to the hot water supply. After serving faithfully for over 10 years, I started having problems with the pump (it started jamming). After hitting it 2-3 times, it would stop working. Then, just the day before yesterday, I had a big wash, and the pump slowly but surely started leaking, although I didn't notice the leak right away. It's a shame these machines are generally no longer made, and spare parts are no longer available. It saved a significant amount of space in the bathroom.
Yes... It's a pity... However, you can now make a water heater out of it... It's very simple: pour water into it... throw in a boiler... and voila, that's it... you can drink tea... or cook food.
Our Hansa washing machine is leaking. It's been working for years and then suddenly it started leaking. How can we fix it? The water is leaking from the bottom. We suspect our cat tore the seal.
The door of my LG washing machine closes tightly. Initially, everything is fine: water intake begins, and the drum rotates. When the water level reaches its maximum, water suddenly begins to leak under pressure from under the closed door. There is no leakage during the spin and drain cycles. The door seal is intact.
Electrolux washing machine, vertical. When filling and draining, water appears on the floor near the back of the inlet and drain hoses. How can I fix it?
Tell me, did you find out the cause of the leak? I have a different washing machine, but the problem is the same: it leaks after washing, even though the water is turned off and everything drained is fine. It's leaking from underneath and is quite noticeable. It feels like there's a spring under the machine.
My washing machine was turned off, the door was open, and I noticed a puddle. Upon inspection, I saw it dripping from the bottom of the door. It's a new Bosch. What's causing it?
My Zanussi is leaking. It's leaking right from the bottom of the machine, just as the water is filling. I tried pouring water through the door, and the same thing happens.
Hello! I have a Zanussi TA833V vertical washing machine; it's about 14 years old, maybe more. After the main wash with detergent, water starts splashing out just when I fill the rinse cycle. It's like a stream of air coming out of the steam outlet. What's causing this?
LG washing machine. 12 years old. It washes well, but after a while it starts leaking. I can't figure out where it's leaking. Can anyone tell me what it could be?
Ariston, I had a leak on the bottom left. After 10 minutes of washing, it gave a "no water" error. Yesterday, a leak appeared on the right. Can you tell me what it is?
The site is very useful, because even without being a master, everything is clear
