How to open and clean the filter in an Indesit washing machine

Cleaning the filter in an Indesit washing machineAutomatic washing machines are designed with filters. One of these is a metal mesh screen installed at the inlet of the inlet hose. This screen protects the machine from rust particles and large impurities found in the water. However, when asking professionals about cleaning a washing machine filter, most people are referring not to this part, but to the drain pump filter. How to remove and clean this filter in an Indesit machine is discussed below.

Finding the part

location of the drain filterThe drain filter is called by various names, for example, a pump filter, as it's directly connected to the washing machine's pump. It's also called a drainage or debris filter, as it traps large debris and small objects that fall into the tub. In general, no matter what you call it, it performs one function - filtering waste water from large debris so that it does not get into the pipes and pump and does not damage the parts.

Where is the drain filter located? At the bottom of the machine, of course. In both top-loading and front-loading washing machines, the drain filter is located behind the narrow bottom panel. This panel is secured with clips. It can be removed by prying it off with any flat tool, such as a screwdriver or scissors. Once the plastic panel is removed, the drain filter cover is immediately visible; it's located on the right side, typically black, and has a handle.

We remove and clean the filter

Removing the filter from the pump is easy: just turn the cover counterclockwise. But before you do, be prepared. When you unscrew the drain filter, water will leak from the machine. It won't be much—about half a liter. However, this can add to your workload. If the machine is built into furniture, even a small amount of water will leak under it, requiring you to pull everything out, wipe it clean, and dry it.

preparing to clean the filterTo avoid this, prepare a large, soft cloth that absorbs water well. Place a rag around the bottom of the machine in the area of the part you're removing, and then unscrew the drain filter. After a couple of turns, pull it out.

All that's left is to clean the part. To do this, you can do the following:

  • rinse the filter under running water;
  • if it is very dirty, use an old toothbrush and clean the dirty areas;
  • You can soak the filter for several hours in a solution of water and citric acid; this cleaning will help remove limescale and unpleasant odors.

Don't forget to clean the filter seat. Shine a flashlight into it to see if you can spot any debris. Try to remove it.

What difficulties may arise?

drain filterIt's not as simple as it might seem at first glance. Cleaning your washing machine filter can present several challenges. It might simply not come out, no matter how hard you try. And you won’t be able to twist it too much, you might break the plastic. This can indeed happen if the filter has never been removed from the pump during its entire period of operation, meaning it has never been cleaned, and has simply become “stuck” during this time.

To remove the part, you need to remove the pump from the Indesit washing machine. Access to the pump is easy in this brand of machine. Turn the machine on its side and look at the bottom. If there's no cover, you'll immediately see the pump. If there is a cover, you'll need to unscrew it. Disconnect the hoses and wire connectors from the pump, and remove the bolts holding the part in place at the front. Then unscrew the electrical part from the pump and spray the filter with WD-40. Afterwards, try opening the filter and then cleaning it.

Once cleaning is complete, assemble the drain pump and connect it to the pipes, fix it to the front panel. Check if you have screwed the filter cap tightly, if not, water will leak onto the floor.

! The washing machine filter should be cleaned as needed, but at least once every six months.

So, don't wait until the filter gets clogged, or worse, the pump. regular cleaning Not just this one part of your Indesit washing machine, but the entire system itself. Take good care of it, and you won't have to worry about replacing it.

    After cleaning, the filter started leaking. What should I do?

      This means you installed the filter cap incorrectly. It needs to be held strictly perpendicular when screwing it on, without tilting it.

    What should I do if the filter is cleaned, but the machine does not switch to the next operation, and the light comes on that requires re-cleaning?

    That's not a filter, that's just nonsense. The old Vyatka-Alenka had a filter! It had a magnetized comb—like a paper clip. Metal coins would stick, and anything non-metallic would get stuck in it!
