How to wash a hollow fiber pillow in a washing machine
Refreshing large items by hand is a chore, so housewives are increasingly opting for the more convenient and faster washing machine. Almost everything is on the "white list" for the washing machine, and even hollow fiber pillows are allowed in the drum. However, you shouldn't rush with the latter, as this type of filling requires special care. We'll explain in detail below.
The nuances of automatic washing
Despite the ongoing debate about the compatibility of hollow fiber and washing machines, don't put off washing your pillow. Another solution is to pay attention to the manufacturer's label. Each manufacturer has its own cleaning instructions, and if the label indicates machine washability, there's no need to worry.
For those unsure, there's another option: test the filling's readiness for the drum. To do this, place the pillow on a flat surface and place a heavy object in the center. After 3-5 minutes, remove the "press" and evaluate the results. If the original shape does not return, it means that the material is of poor quality or has lost its elasticity due to long service life. In any case, it’s not worth taking risks with machine washing.
There are no other contraindications for washing hollow fiber in a washing machine. Just remember to follow the special instructions for starting the cycle and adhere to the following instructions:
- select the “Synthetics” or “Delicates” program; it is strictly not recommended to turn on other programs, as they can damage the condition of the filler;

- Set the temperature to 40°C. If you set it higher, the material will permanently lose its original softness;
- Turn off the spin cycle or set it to the lowest setting. If the drum spins too vigorously, the hollow fiber will become crumpled.
- Pour a general-purpose liquid detergent into the tray. Powders should not be used, as they clog the seal and are difficult to rinse out of non-woven fibers. Chlorine-containing compounds are also prohibited due to their excessively aggressive effects;
- Carefully place the pillow into the drum.
Important! Do not confuse washing your pillow with cleaning down items, and do not place tennis balls in the drum. These will damage the non-woven fibers and ruin the hollow fiber.
- start the wash;
- at the end of the cycle, remove and let the absorbed water drain;
- dry.
We'll go into more detail about some of the steps below, but the general process for washing a hollowfiber pillow is as follows. If it is not possible to provide the product with all the listed conditions, it is better not to start the cycle.A safer alternative is hand cleaning or dry cleaning.
Dry the product correctly
It's best to stop drying the washed item. It's important to follow certain rules here, otherwise the already clean pillow will crumple and become ruined. What should you do in an ideal situation?
- Without wringing, remove from the machine.
- Let the water drain by placing a pillow on both arms over the bath.
- Place on a horizontal surface (e.g. a floor dryer) outdoors – on a balcony, street, avoiding direct sunlight.
Caution! Hanging a hollowfiber pillow with clothespins is strictly prohibited!
If you can't place the washed item outside, try a different approach. Place it as close to a window as possible, open all the windows in the apartment, and leave the premises. The main thing is to come back and fluff the pillow at least once an hour to prevent lumps from forming.
We restore the pillow to its original appearance
When the question of whether hollowfiber can be machine washed is asked during or at the end of the process, expect dire consequences. But a ruined pillow isn't a reason to give up. Most often, the situation can be corrected with simple manipulations. So, if you have a crumpled pillow, you need to:
- Find a large massage brush and an undercoat deshedding tool for dogs and cats.
- Carefully rip open the pillow, remove the loose filling and place it in a container.
- Take some holofiber, put it on a comb and brush it through.
- Continue this procedure until all the material is fluffed up.
Re-combed filling will not become perfectly soft and voluminous, but it will acquire an optimal condition and allow you to use the pillow for some time. Another option is to buy holofiber for a small amount of money at a sewing and craft store, and then replace the old material with new. The latter method will be a little more expensive, but it will save time and restore the pillow to its former beauty and elasticity.
For those who don't want to risk using a machine
The safest way is to forget about the washing machine and refresh your hollowfiber pillow by hand. This way, the risk of ruining its original shape and degrading the quality of the filling is reduced to zero. But only if you follow basic rules and recommendations. These include the following:
- First, fill a basin with water at 30-40 degrees and add liquid detergent (washing gel or hair shampoo);
- wait until the gel is completely dissolved in water;
- immerse the pillow and leave for half an hour;
- lightly rinse the pillow in a foam solution;
- without wringing, place in the bath and rinse thoroughly;
- Let the water drain, place it on a drying rack and dry, shaking the filling regularly.
A hollowfiber pillow isn't a reason to give up on the washing machine. By choosing the right cycle and following the instructions, you can easily achieve a clean and intact pillow.
