How to place a dishwasher in the kitchen?

How to place a dishwasher in the kitchenBefore purchasing a dishwasher, it's essential to consider all the details of the space, measure it, and carefully plan what and where to install it. Due to the small size of modern apartments, immediately installing a dishwasher in the kitchen in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable isn't easy. It's important to consider existing design solutions.

Depends on what device you have

Today, there are so many different types of dishwashers that many users can simply become overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. It's important to understand the details, decide on the type and design of the dishwasher, take all the measurements, and only then purchase the unit. Which one should you choose?

Dishwashers are typically divided into two categories. The first is compact or full-size, and the second is based on installation type (built-in, countertop, or freestanding). Full-size models are unpopular because they are inconvenient to install in the small apartments of most Russians. Therefore, preference is generally given to smaller, compact models.

Now let's talk about the installation method

Freestanding dishwashers. Yes, with this option, you won't have to look for dishwasher stands or install a kitchen cabinet with a niche for the dishwasher, but there are some downsides, too. For example, according to recommendations for proper placement, the dishwasher should be located as far away from the stove as possible and, naturally, as close to utilities as possible. You'll agree, this isn't always possible. Especially since freestanding models are typically quite large. Compact models, however, tend to be narrow but tall. And a tall dishwasher isn't always convenient.

Tabletop dishwashers are the most compact option. Firstly, they're easy to transport. This means you can install, remove, reposition, or move the unit at any time. Plus, you won't have to worry about complicated plumbing. It's not hard to find a place for a tabletop dishwasher

  • Drainage is carried out through the kitchen sink.
  • Water is collected through the tap.
  • You can place it on any table or kitchen cabinet, whichever is more convenient. Some people even place these PMs under the table, which saves even more space.

Important! The main drawback of this type of installation is the small compartment for dishes. A model of this design is a kind of mini-dishwasher. However, even when placed on the countertop, it will still take up a significant amount of space.

Built-in appliances. These are the favorites on the Russian market. As a rule, such a model is either partially or completely built into the kitchen unit and acts as a dining cabinet. In the first case, the dishwasher is color-matched but has its own façade (you can see what it's like), while in the second, it's hidden behind cabinet doors, as if it were just a kitchen cabinet.

All this is fine if there's enough space in the kitchen to install the model, as it's quite large. And then there's the problem of connecting to utilities. But where there's demand, there's supply. The market is currently brimming with compact built-in units. They're easy to install, there's always room, and connecting them to electricity and plumbing isn't all that difficult.

Size to capacity ratio

Many people believe that a dishwasher's external dimensions don't affect its capacity, but this is a misconception. The majority of the capacity is actually the load tank. Therefore, the smaller the machine, the fewer cutlery you can wash. How do you understand the relationship between the dimensions of the machine and its capacity?

  1. The average dimensions of the largest washing machine are 60 x 60 x 85 cm (width – depth – height). These are the dimensions of a full-size freestanding model. Some machines may differ by a few centimeters, but this is rare. This type of machine has the largest capacity tank, capable of washing 10-12 sets of laundry.
  2. Compact machines. These are built-in models, which are typically smaller than freestanding models. Their average dimensions are 45x60x85. Despite the slight difference in dimensions, the capacity of the washing chamber is almost half as large and is only 6-8 sets of dishes.
  3. Compact machines. They don't require large capacity (4-6 sets). Dimensions: 45x55x45.types of dishwashers

A set is a set of cutlery for one person. Typically, it includes a plate for the first person, a plate for the second person, a fork, a spoon, a knife, and a mug. What constitutes a set for a specific model is specified in the instructions.

Find a place in advance

Of course, it's much easier to plan the kitchen space properly and install all the furniture and appliances correctly before the main renovation is completed. Then you can decide in advance where it's most convenient to place the appliance and connect all the utilities to it. In the case of a built-in model, the kitchen cabinetry is designed with the location of the dishwasher and its utilities in mind.Consider the dimensions of the dishwasher in advance

But if you've decided to buy a dishwasher regardless of the renovation, when everything's already been installed and functioning for several years, you'll have to put in a lot of effort. It'll be difficult to create a space that won't have any connection issues, will ensure the stove is a reasonable distance away, and will fit seamlessly into the kitchen decor. Here are some installation recommendations.

  1. If the installation site is located far from utility lines, the pipes can be extended. However, if this isn't possible, install the unit closer to the sink. Without a connection to the necessary utilities, it simply won't work.
  2. Make sure the floor beneath the dishwasher is perfectly level. Slopes and uneven surfaces can cause leaks and damage.
  3. If by chance you have to place the PM close to the stove, leave 15-40 cm between them, otherwise the device will overheat and fail.

The mounting must be as rigid as possible. It's best to place the appliances between kitchen cabinets.
