Professional and industrial dishwashers
If you own or plan to own a cafe, restaurant, or large hotel, you'll need professional equipment to improve service quality and gain a competitive advantage. Professional dishwashers are just such equipment. How do professional dishwashers differ from household ones? What types are available and what features do they offer? We'll discuss these topics in this article.
Types of industrial dishwashers
There are a huge variety of commercial dishwasher models, and to understand them and choose the right one for your business, it's important to classify them. A good basis for classification is the type of commercial dishwasher. There are three types of commercial dishwashers:
- frontal type;
- dome type;
- tunnel type.

Professional front-loading dishwashers are the most popular type among consumers. And for good reason.
- A front-loading dishwasher takes up much less space than a dome-type or, even more so, a tunnel-type dishwasher.
- It is much easier to use than other types of machines.
- In terms of cost, it is somewhat cheaper than dome and tunnel ones.
- Its productivity is just enough for small and medium-sized catering establishments such as restaurants, cafes, bars, and canteens, of which there are most.
Front-loading dishwashers have a limited capacity. Typically, their throughput does not exceed 800-900 items per hour., but this amount is sometimes enough to serve three small cafes at once. A front-loading dishwasher is very similar to a domestic dishwasher, the only difference being the size.
A dome-type dishwasher differs from a front-loading dishwasher in its larger size. The machine's body is attached to the sides with a sink and an impressive sorting surface. The main body of a dome-type dishwasher divides into two parts when loading dishes: the base and the dome. The top of the base has a sink-like recess where the basket of dishes is placed, then the dome closes this recess, and the washing mode is selected. The machine's throughput reaches up to 1,500 items per hour.
Tunnel-type dishwashers are considered the most productive. Under certain conditions, these machines can wash up to 2,000-2,500 items per hour. These are conveyor-type machines, meaning the dishes are pre-loaded into special cassette trays, each the size of a small box. The cassettes are placed in a row on a conveyor and gradually move toward the washing tank and then the drying tank.
Dishwashers with such high performance are installed in cafeterias at large enterprises, in large hotels, business centers, and in major catering establishments. Installing such a "miracle of technology" requires approximately 15 square meters of space.
Important! A tunnel dishwasher requires human presence to operate, as dishes must be loaded onto a conveyor and then picked up as they emerge from the tanks.
How does an industrial dishwasher differ from a household one?
As noted above, industrial front-loading dishwashers are very similar to regular household dishwashers. So what's the difference between them, other than price? After all, a professional dishwasher will cost four times as much as a household dishwasher.
- A professional machine differs from a household one in size and tank capacity.
- Professional machines are made from highly reliable components, each designed for a significant service life. For example, a household machine might have a flimsy plastic spray arm, while a professional machine might have one made of stainless steel.
- An industrial dishwasher can wash tens of times more dishes than a household one.
- Connecting an industrial dishwasher may require special communications - a water supply with a certain capacity and an industrial power supply.
Please note: Not all commercial dishwashers offer a fully automated dishwashing process.
Some entrepreneurs naively believe they can equip their small cafe with a few household dishwashers, and they'll be perfectly capable of handling the task. While this may be true at first, the equipment will eventually wear out, forcing them to constantly pay for repairs. As a result, immediate savings will turn into significant costs in the long run. Experts say it's better to pay a little extra upfront and buy a commercial dishwasher to avoid problems later.
