Checking a used dishwasher when buying from a private seller
According to statistics, more and more people are starting to use dishwashers every year. However, for some, it's still a rather expensive purchase. Buying a used dishwasher can be a great option. If the previous owners have taken good care of it, it's an excellent chance to buy a truly good unit at a lower price. However, you need to know how to properly check a used dishwasher for its "suitability" to avoid buying a wreck.
What are we going to check?
Not every used seller will allow you to disassemble the dishwasher before purchasing it to ensure it works properly. For this reason, it is better to buy from someone you know; it is easier to negotiate with them. To protect yourself from failure when buying from a private seller, you need to check a lot of things.
- Condition of fasteners. If the bolts show visible dents or signs of loosening, it likely means the machine has already been repaired. While repairs aren't necessarily a cause for concern, there's no guarantee that the parts used are truly high-quality. If significant cost cutting occurred during the repair process, it's not a good sign.
- Check for calcium deposits and other types of corrosion. If you see any with the naked eye, it almost certainly indicates that the pump, pipes, and heater are in poor condition.
- Sprinklers. They're the first to suffer from the notorious buildup and corrosion, and they can become ineffective. Check to see if they rotate freely, if they're all in place, and what their overall appearance is.

- Hoses' condition. Rubber hardens with prolonged use and can burst at any time. Check the hoses for kinks, damage, ease of movement, and blockages.
- Overall, the machine's functionality. When you sell it, it will likely be disconnected from all utilities, but you can protect yourself from fraud by checking that the unit turns on and off properly. Connecting it to the water supply is also likely impossible, so you'll have to rely on luck.
If at least the above factors are in order, this will provide some kind of guarantee that the machine will not break down in the first few days after purchase.
Why is it better to buy a dishwasher at a second-hand store?
Don't underestimate the value of consignment shops. Although they sell used items, they undergo inspection and pre-sale preparation.
Important! This procedure involves replacing worn parts, if necessary, and cleaning clogged areas.
So, used equipment stores are quite trustworthy. Moreover, all technical specifications are presented, and sellers even provide warranty cards. However, sellers on free classifieds sites aren't always as trustworthy. Some try to sell worthless equipment at a high price, concealing its flaws.
