Checking the dishwasher circulation pump

Checking the dishwasher circulation pumpThe circulation pump is the heart of the dishwasher. It directs water to the spray arms and into the main chamber. Even minor damage to the pump can cause the machine to malfunction.

You can check your dishwasher's circulation pump yourself. We'll look at how this malfunction manifests itself and where the component is located. We'll also explain how to replace or repair the pump.

Demonstration of failure and inspection of the pump

The quality of all programs stored in the dishwasher's memory depends on the condition of the circulation pump. It ensures a constant circulation of water within the system. How does this element work?

  • The pump supplies clean water to the nozzles.
  • Liquid is sprayed under pressure throughout the working chamber, washing away grease and dirt from dishes.
  • The water flows downwards where it is filtered.
  • The pump again supplies purified water to the nozzles.

If the water in the dishwasher does not circulate, and the filter elements and nozzles are not clogged, then it is time to change the circulation pump.

Signs that indicate a faulty circulation pump:The circulation pump supplies water to the sprinklers.

  • the error code corresponding to the failure, displayed on the display;
  • the machine fills with water, but nothing happens – the wash does not start;
  • the appliance does not wash dishes due to weak water pressure;
  • loud noise and crackling when the equipment is operating;
  • activation of the leak protection system.

To inspect the pump that circulates water in the system, you'll need to partially disassemble the dishwasher. The procedure is as follows:

  • unplug the dishwasher;
  • disconnect the device from the water supply and sewerage system;
  • Move the dishwasher to a place where it will be convenient to work with;
  • place the machine on the floor;How to disassemble an Electrolux dishwasher
  • Unclip the latches that hold the bottom of the dishwasher in place;
  • move the machine tray to the side;
  • disconnect and remove the inlet pipe;
  • Find the pump, disconnect the wiring from it, and, having dealt with the clamps, remove the pump from the housing.

You can "reanimate" your dishwasher with your own handsIt is more expedient and easier to replace the faulty circulation pump with a new one. However, if you have the time and the desire to tinker, the element can be repaired. We'll tell you how experts repair such a part.

Is it possible to repair a circulation pump?

When the dishwasher fills with water but then stops and makes no more noise, in 98% of cases the circulation pump is faulty. Of course, the first step is to clean the filters, but if that doesn't help, you'll need to check the pump.

Possible causes of circulation pump failure:

  • strong power surge;
  • damage or jamming of the impeller;
  • wear of one or a pair of graphite bushings;
  • water getting on the pump winding;
  • combustion of the heating element (typical only for new generation circulation pumps with a built-in heating element).repair of the circulation pump

If the component failure is caused by a power surge or a short circuit in the winding, the component cannot be repaired. The pump will need to be replaced. If the impeller is damaged or the bushings are worn, the circulation pump can be repaired.

Dishwasher circulation pumps typically stop working due to worn graphite bushings. These are inspected after the pump is removed. If significant play is noticeable, the components will need to be replaced. We'll explain how.

  • Disassemble the pump by unscrewing the nozzle on the rotor.
  • Remove the impeller from the shaft (this can be problematic as the impeller often cracks during removal and needs to be replaced as well).
  • The bushings and impeller can be made on a 3D printer from nylon, or the components can be ordered online.repair kit for circulation pump PMM
  • Install new bushings in place of the old ones.
  • Assemble the pump in reverse order.

When ordering components online, be sure to include the model and serial number of your dishwasher.

The cost of a new pump will depend on the dishwasher model. A complete pump can be purchased starting at $37. Individual parts are less expensive; for example, an impeller starts at $3.50, and a graphite bushing starts at $2.50.
