The start button is flashing green on my Electrolux washing machine.

If your washing machine's start button is flashing green, there's likely a problem with the motor. In this case, the machine may detect damage and stop working, but the green light next to the cycle start button will continue to flash. Let's take a closer look at this issue and how to safely troubleshoot it at home.

The brushes are worn out

One of the most common problems with Electrolux washing machines is worn-out brushes, which fail after approximately 5 years of active use. This problem can be easily fixed on your own without calling a service center specialist. Moreover, the machine itself will notify the user that the brushes are worn out. How can this be determined?

• The washing machine is frozen and its start button is flashing green, but there has been no previous power outage, sudden voltage drop, or simple damage to the power cord.
• While the drum is rotating, you may hear a loud grinding sound and other sounds that are not typical for washing.
• The spin performance has seriously deteriorated due to the fact that the electric motor speed has decreased.
• Washing is accompanied by a strong burning smell.
• On the display of the Electrolux automatic washing machine you can see an error code indicating a malfunction of the electric motor.

Motor brushes should always be replaced in pairs, even if only one is worn.

Any of the above symptoms could indicate a faulty brush assembly. The likelihood only increases if multiple symptoms are present. To test this theory, you'll need to partially disassemble the appliance and carefully examine the parts. If the theory is confirmed, you'll need to purchase spare parts and install them in place of the damaged ones. This is very easy to do yourself, as we'll cover in detail in the following sections of this article.

Preparing for engine restoration

First of all, you will need to buy original brushes for your Electrolux washing machine. Of course, you can buy cheaper analogues, but you shouldn’t do this, because a fake will work worse and can also cause damage to your machine.After purchasing, you should prepare a set of repair tools that can be found in any home workshop:

• screwdrivers of different shapes;
• a simple pencil or pen;
• 8 mm TORX key.

Afterwards, be sure to disconnect the appliance from the power supply and water supply. Next, disconnect the inlet hose, placing a container underneath it to collect any waste liquid that may remain in the hose. Finally, remove the debris filter, empty it, and remove all debris from the opening where the element was installed.

This completes the preparatory stage. All that remains is to move the Electrolux washing machine to the center of the room to gain easy access to its rear.

Changing graphite tips

The brushes are part of the commutator motor, so you'll need to partially disassemble your Electrolux washing machine to access this key component. We disconnected the appliance from the power supply in the previous section, so you can get started right away. You need to remove the bottom cover of the SM housing - this will give you access to the electric motor located directly under the tank. You can also remove the back panel of your Electrolux washing machine to make the disassembly process much easier. What do you do next?

• Carefully remove the drive belt from the motor.
• Disconnect the wiring connected to the electric motor.

Take photos of the correct wiring connections to use as an example later.

• Unscrew the bolts holding the element.
• Remove the motor itself.

Now that you have the necessary part of your Electrolux washing machine in hand, you need to remove the damaged brushes located on the sides of the motor. Follow the instructions carefully to replace them.

• Unclip the wire.
• Move the contact down.
• Remove the brush by gently stretching the spring.
• Repeat the described steps with the second electric brush.

All that's left to do is install the new spare part into its seat with the tip in the socket. Then compress and install the spring, cover it with the contact, and connect the wire. After the replacement, proceed to install the motor in its place and secure the element with bolts. Pay close attention to the wiring to avoid any confusion. Finally, replace the drive belt, reinstall the back panel, and reinstall the top cover of the Electrolux washing machine.

This completes the repair; the machine should be returned to its original location and tested for proper operation using a test cycle. Initially, after installing the new brushes, you may notice some unusual noise during washing, but this will disappear completely once the brushes have settled in.
