Dishwasher sizes
When creating an attractive kitchen design, every centimeter of space counts, especially if space is limited. To arrange your kitchen appliances and ensure you don't miss anything, you need to know their dimensions. As for dishwashers, there are different types, and we decided to explain which ones are available, especially since there's plenty to discuss.
Dimensions of built-in dishwashers
All dishwashers are divided into two broad categories: built-in and freestanding. Many people today prefer built-in appliances; sales of built-in dishwashers are several times higher than those that cannot be built into kitchen cabinets. In this case, the appliance can be fully integrated, when the dishwasher is not visible behind the furniture front, or partially integrated, when the machine’s control panel is located on the front.
Based on size, all built-in dishwashers are further divided into three groups.
- The first group is full-size dishwashers, the height of which is from 60 to 85 cm, depth from 54 to 63 cm, width from 55 to 65 cm.
- The second group is narrow machines, the height of which is 81-85 cm, depth 51-65 cm, width 44-45 cm.
- The third group is compact dishwashers, the height of which is 43.8 – 60 cm, width 54.5 – 60 cm, depth 49.5 – 60 cm.
Please note! Built-in dishwashers are typically 83 cm tall—the standard height for undercounter installations.
Let us give some examples of models of such dishwashers, presenting the information in a table.

However, in addition to the three groups listed above, there are dishwashers whose dimensions are non-standard and difficult to classify. Examples include the following dishwashers:
- Kuppersbusch IGVS 6609 – dimensions (WxDxH) 60x55x87 cm;
- Kuppersbusch IGS 6908.1 GE — size (WxDxH) 60x57x91 cm (very high machine);
- Smeg STO905-1 — size (WxHxD) 86x55x58 cm;
- Samsung DW50H4050BB — dimensions (WxDxH) 45 x 65 x 82 cm.

Based on their dimensions, these dishwashers are quite large. Care must be taken when purchasing, as they may not fit the height, depth, or width of a standard kitchen. By the way, full-size appliances have an advantage in terms of functionality and capacity, which is important for large families, Read more about this in the article Overview of 60 cm built-in dishwashers.
Dimensions of freestanding dishwashers
Freestanding dishwashers can also be divided into two broad groups: floor-standing dishwashers and countertop dishwashers. They come in various sizes, and are further subdivided into:
- full-size ones have a width of 60 cm, a depth of 55-68 cm, a height of 80-89 cm;
- narrow ones have a width of 45 cm, a depth of 54-64 cm, a height of 82-85 cm;
- compact ones have a width of 54.5-55.1 cm, depth of 49-53 cm, height of 43.5-60 cm.
Important! Despite the dimensions listed in the dishwasher's data sheet, be aware that the manufacturer's measurements are not exact and may have an error margin of plus or minus a centimeter. In some cases, this centimeter can be crucial.

Let's note one more feature of the dishwasher's dimensions. Well-known appliance manufacturers such as Bosch, Candy, Siemens, Electrolux, and Hansa focus on the Russian consumer to a greater extent. The dimensions of their machines are standard, and they often fit perfectly into the dimensions of furniture. However, dishwashers from brands like Smeg, Kuppersbusch, and Miele can vary significantly in size, so be careful.
Please note! A full-size or slimline freestanding dishwasher may have a removable top lid, allowing it to be placed under a countertop. These machines typically have latches or screws on the back that secure the lid.
The smallest dishwashers
A few words about miniature or compact dishwashers are worth mentioning. In their quest to fit a dishwasher into a small kitchen, people are looking for appliances not only 45 cm, but also 40 cm, and even 30 cm. But where should these 30 and 40 cm be—in width or perhaps in depth? In fact, it doesn’t matter, because there are simply no dishwashers on sale that are 40 cm wide or deep, let alone 30 cm.
If a Yandex search turns up dozens of websites offering these mini dishwashers, don't get too excited. It's just a gimmick. Just look at the specifications of a specific model, and you'll see that its width is clearly not 30 cm, or even 40 cm. 30 cm is the external dimension of the dishwasher, either in width or depth, but what about the internal dimensions and volume of the washing chamber? You can't fit even two place settings in such a machine, let alone pots and pans. Furthermore, what kind of parts would be needed for such a 30 cm dishwasher, and how would they fit inside such a small cabinet? In short, it's technically impossible, or very difficult and unreasonable, to build such a dishwasher.
In general, the minimum dishwasher width is 44.5 cm. Such machines are rare; however, the most common models are 45 cm wide. As for depth, the minimum for a dishwasher is 49 cm. For example, the Dometic DW2440 dishwasher is 55 cm wide and 45 cm high.
Note! The smallest dishwashers are countertop models, while built-in compact dishwashers are a few centimeters larger. However, this doesn't prevent such a machine from being hidden in a cabinet under the sink.
So, after carefully examining the dimensions of various dishwasher models, we concluded that most are standard. If you choose your dishwasher carefully, you can find the perfect option for any kitchen. Happy shopping!
