A damaged front-loading door on a washing machine is a fairly common and relatively minor problem. Most often, you can repair the door yourself, without having to take it to a service center. We'll explain how to remove and repair an LG washing machine door at home, including the tools you'll need.
We separate the door from the machine body
The first step in repairing an LG washing machine door is removing the door. Trying to repair the door while it's hanging is a futile undertaking. Removing the door and hinges takes about five minutes. There's nothing complicated about the job. Here's the procedure:
de-energize the washing machine;
open the door wide to gain free access to all fasteners;
take a set of open-end wrenches;
Locate the retaining bolts near the door hinges;
Use an 8 mm spanner to remove the fasteners.
The door of the LG washing machine hangs on special hooks-holders.
Therefore, don't try to pry the hatch off the body immediately after removing the bolts. First, remove the element from the hooks. Raise the hinges by approximately 5-7 mm, then pull the washing machine door towards you.
This is the only way to quickly and safely remove the door of your automatic washing machine. Don't use excessive force; the hooks are made of soft metal and are easily damaged. Then place the door on a flat surface. The next steps will depend on the type of damage.
Possible door malfunctions
Now it's time to inspect the door and study its design. This will help determine what exactly is wrong. While door designs are similar across washing machines of different brands, there are still some differences. It's also worth examining the electrical circuit to rule out a faulty door lock.
What are the most common problems encountered when repairing a door?
crack in the sunroof glass;
sagging hinges holding the door;
breakage of the support on the hinges;
damage to the handle;
the latch does not work or sticks.
Sometimes the locking device itself, located separately on the washing machine body, fails. This lock is activated by a command from the electronic module. If the locking device fails, the system will remain leaky, meaning the washing machine will not begin filling with water. In this case, the door isn't the cause; you don't have to remove it; you'll have to work on the door. UBL.
Opening/closing mechanism
Let's say, while using the washing machine, you realize the drum door isn't closing tightly, and you have to push on it to engage the latch. Only then do you hear a distinctive click. In this case, the cause is most likely a deformed latch lever. The element develops irregularities that prevent it from engaging.
To resolve this issue:
remove the washing machine door from its hinges;
inspect the latch on the door lock;
Using a file, file down any uneven areas on the lever;
treat the surface of the latch with graphite lubricant (to prevent the appearance of new defects);
Put the door back on the washing machine.
Sometimes the door will no longer lock due to sagging hinges. This happens when the fasteners become loose. In this situation, the door hinges need to be adjusted. Tighten the fasteners until the hatch is level.
When using the washing machine, ensure that small children do not hang on the door. Also, do not place clothing on the door. This will prevent the element from sagging.
The glass is damaged
If the glass on the washing machine door cracks, further use of the machine becomes impossible. Water will simply leak out of the drum. In this case, the ideal solution is to completely replace the door. If this is not possible and the crack is small, repairing the glass is possible.
It is not possible to replace just the glass of the washing machine door; you will have to buy and install a new door leaf.
For minor glass damage, you can try repairing the cracks yourself. You'll need plastic film, tape, reinforcing tape, and an epoxy resin solution. Pay special attention to the preparation of the mixture.
To prepare the epoxy solution you need:
add resin and hardener to the container in a ratio of 6:4;
Mix the ingredients until they reach the consistency of liquid sour cream (if the solution turns out thicker, you should additionally heat it in a water bath).
Use only epoxy solution based on universal glue EDP. It is not recommended to use sealant to repair cracks in the glass of the washing machine door. After a while, it will wash out completely and the repair will have to be repeated. Resin will provide a more lasting effect.
How to properly repair cracks in your washing machine door glass:
disconnect the hatch from the washing machine body;
Seal the gap from the outside with plastic film and tape, without leaving any voids;
glue reinforcing tape to the inside of the glass (in areas with defects);
fill all cracks with epoxy resin solution;
wait until the mixture dries – the resin hardens within 24 hours;
remove all plastic and tape from the glass;
smooth out any existing uneven areas.
There's no need to rush; it's important to wait until the epoxy has completely dried. 24 hours is the minimum time the door should be left to dry. If you don't wait 24 hours, even resin won't be able to fix the problem.
The handle doesn't work
The handle on LG washing machines often breaks. It simply stops responding to pressure. In this case, the handle will need to be replaced. First, place the door on a flat surface. Then:
Unscrew the bolts located on the inner rim of the door;
carefully separate the halves of the hatch;
remove the axle holding the spring and the handle tongue;
remember the position of the spring - it will be important to repeat it when reassembling;
install the new handle in place;
install the tongue and spring, fix the structure with the axis;
check that the mechanism works;
connect the door halves, screw the fixing bolts back in;
Hang the hatch on the machine.
LG washing machines are common in Russia, so finding and purchasing parts won't be difficult. A new handle is inexpensive and can be customized for your specific washing machine model. All you need to replace it is a screwdriver and pliers—tools you'll find in every home.
To prevent damage to the door, it is important to remember the basic rules:
do not slam the hatch, open/close the sash carefully;
press the handle gently, without force;
Do not hang laundry on the door when loading and unloading items from the machine;
Do not allow small children to hang or ride on the door.
Careless handling of an LG washing machine can lead to various problems. Most door problems can be prevented by careful use of the washing machine. This will save you from additional repair costs.
