DIY Gorenje Washing Machine Repair

Gorenje washing machine repairGorenje automatic washing machines are well-known not only in Russia and the CIS markets, but also in Europe. No matter how advanced and sophisticated Gorenje appliances are, they break down just like any other and require repairs. How do you repair Gorenje washing machines, and what are the most common problems with these machines? Read on to find out.

What breaks down more often?

The owners of the Gorenje brand have always known how to make their appliances more appealing to consumers. Even today, when almost every manufacturer produces "super-sophisticated" automatic washing machines, you can still buy unique appliances under the Gorenje brand. Just look at their automatic washing machines. washing machines with a water tank, which don't rely on running water! Well, today we're not going to talk about the technical specifications of Gorenje machines, but rather how to repair them.

Let's start by looking at the weak points of these washing machines and providing a list of the most common problems encountered in various Gorenje models. This list was compiled using statistics provided by leading service centers in the Russian Federation. Here's the list.

  • According to statistics, the drain pump most often breaks down in such machines. Almost ¼ of service center calls are related to a broken washing machine pump. G
  • In second place is the heating element.
  • Thirdly, there are problems with the drain pipe.
  • And finally, on the fourth – the motor brushes.

A close fifth place is taken by a broken hatch handle. However, this is a very easy repair to make yourself, and we won't describe it here. The key is finding and purchasing the original part, which can be challenging.

The pump is not functioning

Gorenje washing machine drain pumps do indeed break down quite frequently. This is most likely due to the operating conditions of the washing machines. The fact is that original Gorenje washing machine pumps are sensitive to water containing heavy metal salts. The moving parts are so closely fitted to each other that the deposits that form on them due to water block their operation, accelerating wear. Eventually, the pump breaks and needs to be replaced. How can you fix these problems yourself, without calling a technician?

  • We disconnect the washing machine from the utilities.
  • We take out the powder container, pour out the remaining water and put it back.
  • We take the car to a place where it will be convenient to carry out repairs.
  • The pump needs to be accessed through the bottom of the car, so we'll tilt it on its side.
we put the burning car on its side
  • Unlike other brands of automatic washing machines, Gorenje washing machines are closed on all sides. The bottom is also covered by a lid, so it must be removed by unscrewing a few screws.
the bottom is covered with a lid, unscrew the screws
  • Having removed the cover, we expose the part we are interested in, which is located next to the drain pipe - it cannot be confused with anything else.
we get to the problematic parts through the bottom
  • Now we need to confirm the pump is faulty. Take a multimeter, disconnect the plug and wires from the drain pump, and measure the resistance. The device should show around 160 ohms or more. If the multimeter shows nothing, the pump is broken.
  • We remove the old pump by unscrewing several fasteners holding it in place.
unscrew the screws holding the pump
  • We purchase the original pump and install it in place of the old one, not forgetting to attach the plug with wires in place.
  • We put the bottom back in place and then connect the washing machine for testing – the job is done.

Be careful! Malfunctions of this kind are easy to fix yourself, but be careful with the measuring device and don't mix anything up. Otherwise, you could throw away a working pump, leaving the problem unresolved.

The drain pipe is leaking

A rather specific problem with Gorenje washing machines is a broken drain hose. This problem occurs when seemingly sturdy hoses become damaged at the elbow (the double bend in the hose). Why does this happen? There are three main causes:

  1. Poor quality of the pipe material. A manufacturing defect that later leads to a crack in the pipe, resulting in a leak.
  2. The penetration of a sharp foreign object, which, unable to overcome the knee, is driven into it, causing damage.
  3. Using very harsh cleaning agents. Many users, after reading articles and watching videos about cleaning their washing machines, start pouring all sorts of harsh chemicals into their "home helper" in the hopes of getting rid of dirt and limescale. While this may remove the dirt, it also dissolves some of the machine's parts (just kidding).

In this case, repairing a Gorenje washing machine should begin with checking the hoses and pipes. You won't immediately realize that the drain pipe is leaking, so first inspect the drain hose for damage before disassembling the washing machine. The drain hose can also be accessed through the bottom of the washing machine. It's located next to the drain pump.

replacing the drain pipe

All that remains is to remove the original pipe, unscrew the clamps holding the leaky part in place and install a new one in its place.

Important! When installing the new hose, be careful to ensure it fits snugly into place and each connection is securely tightened with the clamp. Do not overtighten the clamp, as this will damage the hose.

The heating element burned out

The heating element is a weak point not only in Gorenje washing machines; most brands of automatic washing machines suffer from this problem, and there are many objective reasons for this.

  • Impurities in the water that settle as limescale on the heater, causing it to fail.
  • Problems with the power grid (voltage surges, etc.).
  • Operating conditions (frequent incorrect switching off of the washing machine by the user or washing at 900WITH).

In any case, if your Gorenje washing machine stops heating water, it's a malfunction, and therefore, at a minimum, you need to check the heating element and replace it if necessary. What's the procedure?

To replace the heating element yourself, you must first prepare the washing machine for use by disconnecting it from the power, water, and sewer lines. Then, remove the machine from its niche or cabinet and turn it so the back is facing you. You'll see a service hatch that needs to be opened by removing a few screws.

open the service hatch

We can now see the heating element, but it's difficult to work with because the drive belt is in the way. Let's remove the belt from the drum pulley.

let's take off the belt

Next, we remove the wires from the heating element contacts. To avoid mixing up the wires later, it's best to immediately label them with markings or take a photo.

We take a photo of the heating element wires

Now take an ohmmeter and check the heating element's resistance. Set the meter to the minimum resistance value. Attach the probes to the two outer contacts. A working heating element has a resistance of 10-30 ohms or more, depending on the heater's wattage. If the meter shows 0 or 1, the heating element needs to be replaced.

Important! If the heating element is working properly but the water isn't heating, also check the thermistor and the wires connecting it to the heating element.

We measure the resistance of the heating element

What should I do to remove the old heating element from the washing machine tank?

  • We unscrew the fastening nut that holds the heating element in its groove. The nut is located exactly in the middle between the heating element contacts.
  • Use pliers to press on the mounting bolt to remove the heating element from its seat, but do not overdo it so as not to break anything.
  • Next, grab the heating element contacts with your hands and rock it from side to side, pulling the heater towards you. If you can't pull it out, you can spray the edges with lubricant. WD-40 and pump again.
  • Once you've removed the old heater, don't rush to install the new one. First, carefully insert your fingers into the opening and try to scrape out any debris from the bottom of the tank. If your car isn't new, there's plenty of debris there.
we take out the heating element
  • Now you can install the new heating element. Insert it into the groove and make sure it's seated tightly.
  • We screw on the fastening nut with our hands, but do not tighten it too much, so as not to tear it off.
  • We attach the wires and put on the drive belt.
  • All that remains is to close the service hatch, put the Gorenje machine back in place, connect it and test it.

The motor brushes are worn out

Wear of the motor brushes is also a common problem in Gorenje washing machines. What are the signs of this problem, and how can you tell when the motor brushes need replacing? Firstly, the motor power will drop significantly, and the drum will spin much more slowly. Secondly, the machine will start to smell burnt, and the motor will likely make a crackling noise when running. Thirdly, the wear of the brushes can be detected by the machine’s self-diagnosis system Gorenje, displaying an error F4.

If these symptoms appear, you should check the engine—there's an 80% chance it's the cause. How do you do this?

  1. Open the washing machine's rear service hatch as described above. You'll see the motor right away, as it's located directly under the drum.
the engine can be accessed through a service hatch
  2. Next, you need to remove the drive belt from the tank pulley so that it does not interfere with us pulling out the engine.
  3. Now we unscrew the bolts holding the motor of the Gorenje washing machine.
we unscrew the bolts holding the engine
  4. We go around the front of the washing machine, take out the powder drawer, pour out the water from it, and then put it back.
  5. We lower the washing machine onto its side and remove its bottom.
  6. Disconnect the plug with wires from the washing machine motor.
  7. We pull the engine from its mounting place as shown in the figure below.
We pull the engine out of its mounting place and remove the brushes
  8. Now we need to remove the brushes from the washing machine motor and inspect them for wear. Worn brushes are difficult to confuse with new, working ones; they are partially or heavily worn and smell burnt.
    new and worn brush
  9. We install new brushes, screw them in place, seat the motor in place, and connect the wires to it. Then we screw the bottom in place.

When installing the engine in its seat, make sure that it is seated all the way, otherwise this may cause a malfunction in the future.

  1. We put the washing machine “on its feet”, go around it from behind and screw the motor in place with bolts.
  2. We put the drive belt back in place and then close the service hatch.
  3. We connect the washing machine and check the motor operation – the work is finished.

In conclusion, we would like to point out that almost all common Gorenje washing machine problems can be fixed yourself, without calling in a technician or paying them large sums of money. However, be extremely careful and cautious, and read the instructions in our publication before attempting anything. Happy repairing!

My Gorenje WS 41091 washing machine fills with water, but the drum doesn't spin and the water doesn't heat up. I've drained and refilled it several times, with the same result.

  2. Gravatar Victor Victor:

The drum rattled. I pulled a white plastic ball out of the drum through a rubber tube. Where did it come from, please?

  3. Gravatar Elya Elya:

Model WS43100, water isn't draining. The display shows error 7. We tried cleaning the drain hole on the bottom of the front panel, but various small debris and a coin came out. We cleaned it, closed it, and tried again, but the same error occurred.

  4. Gravatar Tan Tan:

The car says to lock the door on the display, but it's already tightly closed. And no matter how much I press it, nothing changes.

    • Gravatar Cat Cat:

Most likely, the hatch lock is broken. It needs to be replaced. I watched a video online on how to do it myself. After filming it, I found the right store and bought a new one. I replaced it. It worked.

  5. Gravatar Irina Irina:

During the wash cycle, my washing machine slowly releases water into the drain. What's causing this?

    • Gravatar Yuri Yuri:

The end of the drain hose was installed incorrectly. According to the instructions, it should be at least 50-60 cm from the floor. Yours is likely lower than the tank level. This is why the drain hose usually drains itself.

After washing, the door does not open, the start-pause indicator is on.

    I have Gorenie SensoCare.
I bought it a little over a year ago.
I washed it several times because it constantly showed Error 03.
The filters are clean, the water pressure is normal. I'm tired of washing by hand.
Can anyone tell me what the reason is? The car is new. Thank you.

I have the same car, and the problem is most likely that you accidentally enabled the child lock. It's easy to disable—press and hold the two buttons connected by the bracket that looks like a key or lock icon, and that's it! At least it worked for me; the car is fine. I was about to call a repairman. He should have come over, pressed the two buttons, and paid for the call! Thanks, internet!
