Thread on the washing machine drum

Thread on the washing machine drumWashing machine repairs often require removing the pulley, but this can only be done by removing the screw that extends into the drum threads. This isn't the easiest procedure, especially if you're removing the screw for the first time. You also need to be careful not to damage the threads on the washing machine drum.

What is the drum thread?

Washing machine drum threads come in two varieties: right-hand and left-hand. Most often, the former is used, but left-hand threads are occasionally encountered, so it's important to check the thread type in advance. This is important because turning the screw the other way is dangerous, as you risk damaging the head.

Important! Another problem with removing a screw is that it's often not simply screwed in, but rather held in place with adhesive.

So even if you start turning in the right direction, there's a risk of either stripping the torx splines on the bolt head or breaking not only the head but also the wrench. To accomplish this task without any problems, you need to use special techniques.unscrew the screw

Screw removal technique

Many online experts recommend using an angle grinder with a metal cutting disc to cut slots in the bolt for a regular flat-head screwdriver. Some do the same, but with a suitable drill bit. However, this is a rather painstaking and delicate job, and there's still a risk of doing something wrong and damaging the screw head.

In fact, there's an easier and faster way to solve the problem. All you need to get started:

  • nut. Its diameter should be slightly larger than the star-shaped recess for the tool wrench on our screw;
  • an ordinary hammer.

Next, place the nut on top of the bolt, ensuring the star hole is directly under the nut hole. Then, strike it with a hammer several times (at best, you'll only need to hit it 2-3 times). After each strike, return the nut to its original position, as it will fly off.we heat the screw head

After several blows, try loosening the screw with a wrench. If it still won't budge, repeat the procedure as many times as necessary. There's another popular method for removing the screw on the drum pulley.

  1. Use a hair dryer and heat the head of the product with hot air. This will expand the area being applied, making it easier to work with.
  2. Use a center punch or a narrow chisel. Place it against the bolt at an angle so that subsequent hammer blows on the chisel apply pressure to the head in the direction you want to loosen. In the case of standard threads, the screw is unscrewed counterclockwise.
  3. After this, the bolt should be easily unscrewed with a Star screwdriver or wrench.

All of the above methods are valid, so when choosing equipment, be guided by your tools, available time, and experience with a particular device.

If you managed to remove the bolt holding the drum pulley in place once, you shouldn't have any trouble doing it again. The screw should easily come loose with a standard star wrench.
