What cycle should I use to wash a down jacket in an LG washing machine?
A down jacket is a wardrobe item like many other items, and therefore requires periodic washing, especially during periods of heavy wear. Some modern washing machines automatically offer the appropriate program for washing down items, but with an LG washing machine, for example, this can be problematic. So, which program should you choose for washing a down jacket in an LG washing machine?
Features of washing in LG appliances
What happens if you wash a down jacket incorrectly? Perhaps washing instructions are of no practical use? This is a misconception: if you choose the wrong cycle or detergent, the item will become stained, the filling will clump, and the overall appearance will be completely ruined. Some down jackets are completely unwashable, and it's best to check the garment's label for this information.
If you own an LG washing machine, two functions are ideal for washing the item we're interested in: "Down Duvet" and "Bulky Items." The second program isn't available in all models, but the first is definitely available. Be patient: your down jacket will take a long time to wash thoroughly. For greater efficiency, add a rinse and spin cycle to ensure the powder is thoroughly washed out and the garment isn't heavy with water after washing.
If for some reason you don't trust automatic functions, you can try the "Delicate Mode." Its advantage is that the user can manually adjust the temperature and spin speed based on the manufacturer's recommendations.
Preparing the item for washing
To ensure a successful wash, it's important not only to wash your down jacket properly but also to prepare it for the water treatment. Anyone can do this themselves.
Make sure all pockets are empty. If you find any foreign objects, remove them immediately.
Check your down jacket for heavy soiling (cuffs, collar, or underarms) and, before throwing the item into the drum, rub the problem areas with powder or detergent.
Now you need to turn the item inside out and fasten all the buttons, zippers and locks that there are.
Check carefully for holes where down is leaking. If the holes are too large and significant amounts of down are leaking, it's best not to machine wash the item.
If possible, unzip the hood and fur.
Important! There's a good way to prevent your down jacket from clumping and pilling. Add 2-3 tennis balls to the washing machine along with it. They should be soft to avoid damaging the jacket, and it's best to pre-wash them to avoid fading.
Don't worry about balls being dangerous to your laundry. Most models can handle the weight and bulk of sneakers, which are much heavier and bulkier. Now you can safely close the drum, select a wash cycle, and wait for your item to come out clean.
How to dry?
When drying a down jacket, it's crucial to maintain its shape and appearance. To do this, try following these tips:
unfasten all locks and zippers on the product;
turn the down jacket inside out;
Turn your pockets inside out so they dry faster and don't retain moisture;
hang the item on a hanger to prevent it from becoming deformed;
Don't forget to fluff the down jacket thoroughly as quickly as possible. It will dry much faster in an upright position, so it's important to distribute the down immediately, preventing it from clumping inside the jacket.
If you dry your down jacket on a hanger in an upright position, you should also consider the following recommendations from experts. It is better to place the coat away from heating devices. Fat and other substances that settle, for example, on a radiator, can evaporate and damage the down and cause it to shed actively.
Don't lean the hanger against the wall or, in general, position it so that air can reach the down jacket from all sides. If even one part is blocked, the down inside will rot, ruining the garment beyond repair.
Important! If necessary, iron your down jacket not with an iron, but with a steamer specifically designed for this purpose.
Of course, you can dry-clean a down jacket. But if you want, even an inexperienced homeowner can easily wash a down jacket at home.
