Dishwasher modes
There are thousands of dishwasher models on the market today. Each model has its own set of modes that help it perform its intended task. So what are dishwasher modes?
In this publication, we'll answer this question and also provide an overview of the main brands of dishwashers and their modes. We'll do our best to make it interesting for you.
Differences between a mode and a cycle or program
Experts often use the terms "Cycle," "Mode," and "Program" when referring to dishwashers. What do these terms mean, and what's the difference between modes, cycles, and dishwasher programs? Let's not beat around the bush, but rather state frankly that there's no meaningful difference between these terms. The program, mode and wash cycle all mean the same thing. We're talking about a specific algorithm of actions for a dishwasher, thanks to which it can achieve its main goal – washing dishes, and simultaneously solve a number of other problems:
- leave the dishes intact;
Special modes allow you to carefully wash fragile dishes.
- soak items with dried food residue;
- save resources;
- dry dishes, etc.
Each such algorithm is stored in the dishwasher's memory, and to select it, the user must take the initiative using the control panel. The final result depends on how well the user selects the program, and this requires specific knowledge.
Programs for different brands of dishwashers
As we've already noted, different dishwashers have different modes. The program names may be the same, but don't let this mislead you. Modes can have the same names but fundamentally differ in their operating algorithms, especially when it comes to dishwashers from different brands. So, we decided to do a short review, looking at the modes of some of the most well-known brands.
- Bosch. The Bosch dishwasher's operating modes can be called classic. There are only a few of them, but they work perfectly and make it very easy to understand the dishwasher's operating principle.Bosch dishwashers There are always 4 classic modes: a quick program (for rinsing dishes), an intensive program (for very dirty dishes), a standard program (for everyday washing), and an economical program (for lightly soiled dishes).
- Electrolux. These machines have similar programs. However, the Electrolux's intensive program is slightly longer. Many models also feature a pre-soak program. It's a very useful feature. It helps soak dirty dishes that have been drying for days.
- Miele. More expensive and advanced Miele dishwashers from Germany boast special wash modes: "delicate," "eco," "disinfection," and "turbo dry." What is an eco mode in a dishwasher? It's a program that saves water, electricity, and detergent without compromising cleaning performance.
Turbo Dry isn't a wash mode, but a special drying mode. It blasts dishes with a stream of hot air, accelerating the drying process.
- Blomberg. These machines have a wide range of wash modes stored in their control modules. Owners of these "home helpers" have plenty to choose from, including a BIO program, an automatic program, a half-load mode, and more. The BIO program is specifically designed to combat protein stains. The half-load mode, meanwhile, allows for significant water and energy savings, as it's designed for a single basket load.
- Indesit. One of the most affordable and popular dishwashers in Russia. These machines have a multitude of programs. In addition to those already listed, there are also the following modes: "Children's Dishes," a customizable mini-program, and "Extra." The "Children's Dishes" program is designed specifically for children and allergy sufferers. It uses a small amount of detergent and rinses thoroughly. The mini-program can be set to complete the cycle in 35-40 minutes. If the dishes simply need to be rinsed, this is sufficient. "Extra" is a super-intensive program, suitable only for easy-to-clean and heavily soiled dishes.

- Ardo. Ardo dishwasher programs are very similar in composition and execution to Bosch dishwasher programs, so we won't describe them here. There's nothing special about them.
- AEG. As always, the Germans have something to brag about—just look at the abundance of badges on the bodies of their machines. For example, AEG often includes a night program. Washing at night is beneficial, and if the machine uses a special quiet mode, it's even better. The "Extra Hygiene" program will help clean dishes contaminated with bacteria. It thoroughly removes all dirt, leaving nothing but clean items in the machine, and all germs and hazardous dirt are flushed down the drain.
The list of dishwasher brands is long, but we've decided to stop here, especially since we've covered the main washing modes. Other programs may have different names, but they function essentially the same.
Useful features
In addition to modes, dishwashers can have a significant number of useful functions that can be actively utilized during operation. A description of these functions can be found in the dishwasher's manual; we'll just provide a few clear examples to give you an idea of what we're talking about.
- Automatic door opening. This feature prevents dishes from "suffocating" inside the washing chamber after washing if they are left in there for a long time. Furthermore, leaving the door slightly open allows the dishes to cool faster. This feature allows the machine to open the door automatically at the end of the wash cycle, leaving a 10-15 cm gap.
- Program completion signal. This feature is not new and is very simple. However, many users highly praise it, as the machine always loudly alerts you when it's finished.
- Wash chamber lighting. This feature allows you to unload and load dish baskets without turning on the kitchen light. The lighting is very bright and looks great.
- Delayed start. By setting the timer for a specific time, you can rest assured that the machine will automatically wake up, start, wash, rinse, dry, and shut off. This is convenient for washing dishes overnight.
That concludes our story. We've covered the modes and functions of modern dishwashers, and if you have any questions, we'll be happy to answer them on our forum or in the "Comments" section. Good luck!
