Homemade dishwasher rinse aid
Not all dishwasher owners like using tablets. While convenient, as each tablet contains dishwashing detergent, salt, and rinse aid, it's also expensive. To save money, some people buy dishwashing powder and rinse aid separately, while others go a step further and make their own dishwasher rinse aid. This article explains what you can make homemade rinse aid from and how to make it.
Ingredients for a home remedy
There are countless recipes for homemade dishwasher rinse aids, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of recipe is yours, but let me first warn you against using certain ingredients that can be harmful to your health and damage your dishwasher's components.
- Mouthwashes containing hydrochloric or sulfuric acids should not be prepared. There are several recipes online that use these ingredients, but they are not recommended. Acids are very aggressive to some dishwasher parts, and they also damage dishes made of stainless steel, silver, or plastic.
- Avoid using alkaline-based recipes, as alkali is just as dangerous as acid. Furthermore, alkaline-based rinses do not store well.
- Avoid making vinegar-based rinse aids. 70% vinegar should only be used diluted to a concentration no higher than 9%. Otherwise, an essence-based rinse aid will, contrary to expectations, leave a lingering, unpleasant odor on your dishes. And you'd be better off not smelling the odor coming from your dishwasher's wash chamber.
Recipes for rinses based on 9% vinegar will be presented below.
On citrus juice
The first mouthwash recipe we'll look at today is made with natural citrus juice. This product is both pleasant to make and equally pleasant to use. Here's how it's made.
- Take half a glass of lemon juice (it works best).
- Mix the juice with four tablespoons of glycerin.
- Add 10 drops of orange essential oil to the mixture.

Mix all the above ingredients and pour the mixture into an opaque container. For 12 place settings, you only need one tablespoon of rinse aid. Pour the rinse aid into the fabric softener compartment of your dishwasher. The effect of this rinse aid is amazing. Your dishes will emit a light citrus scent, and the dishwasher will smell like lemons and oranges.
With balsamic vinegar
One of the best homemade dishwasher rinse aids is considered to be a balsamic vinegar-based product. How to make it? First, take 200 grams of balsamic vinegar and add a teaspoon of peppermint essential oil. Second, consolidate the mixture by adding 30 grams of glycerin. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly, and you'll have an excellent rinse aid.
Instead of balsamic vinegar, you can use 9% apple cider vinegar, but the effect will be slightly worse.
This product is economical to use, about 20 g per 10 place settings. For those who don't like mint essential oil, you can use orange or fir oil. The dishes will emit a subtle aroma of the essential oil you choose.

Soda
Washing soda rinse aid is also very popular. It's very simple to make. Take 150 g of washing soda, mix it with 50 g of borax and 100 g of citric acid. Finally, add 50 g of magnesium sulfate to create a dry rinse aid. Add this powder mixture to the fabric softener compartment just like the gel. It dissolves easily and imparts a very light, unobtrusive citrus scent to your dishes. Use 2 teaspoons for 6 place settings.

On ethyl alcohol
Some people accustomed to consuming ethyl alcohol internally may consider this recipe sacrilegious, but we'll share it nonetheless. Take 200 g of 90% ethyl alcohol, mix it with 50 g of citric acid powder and 100 g of warm water. Mix thoroughly and add half a teaspoon of orange oil. The mouthwash should be stored in an airtight container for no more than 6 months. Consumption: 1 tablespoon for 6 place settings.

With ammonia and essential oil
This rinse aid will not only give your dishes a clean scent but also an incredible shine. It's ready in just 5 minutes. Take 50 ml of ammonia, mix it with 5 g of essential oil (preferably citrus-scented) and 20 g of balsamic vinegar. Place the resulting mixture in an airtight container and store for no more than 2 months. Approximate usage: 1 teaspoon per 6 place settings. For example, forWhirlpool ADG 422 dishwasher Fully loaded, you need 2 teaspoons of this rinse aid.

So, making your own mouthwash is a piece of cake. The ingredients are cheap, and it takes no more than 5 minutes. For experimentation, you can try each of the above recipes one by one, then use the one you like best. Good luck!
