What width do dishwashers come in?
When creating a flawless kitchen design and optimally organizing a small space, it's crucial to know the dimensions of all the appliances that will be installed in the kitchen, including the dishwasher. Therefore, kitchen owners, designers, and cabinet makers alike ask themselves: What width can dishwashers be? We'll answer this question in as much detail as possible.
Full-size dishwashers
In most cases, dishwashers have standard dimensions. Until 1994, there was even a document specifying the height, width, and depth of dishwashers. Therefore, installing them in cabinets (also of standard dimensions) was relatively straightforward, except in cases where there simply wasn't enough space in the kitchen for a dishwasher.
Today, everything is different; the approach to interior design has changed. Furniture is now made to custom dimensions. Sometimes this leads to appliances not fitting in the width, depth, or even height of such furniture. It's a shame that even a centimeter or two can ruin everything. Therefore, it's worth paying more attention to choosing a dishwasher, and to the production of furniture.
Most dishwashers are standard-sized machines, close to those once specified in GOST.
These dishwashers are called full-size; their width ranges from 55 to 60 cm, depth from 55 to 60 cm, and height from 80 to 85 cm. These wide dishwashers have a capacity of 10 to 15 place settings—the best option for home use if there's space to install them. Full-size dishwashers are comparable in capacity to automatic washing machines.
Wide dishwashers can be built-in or freestanding. Freestanding dishwashers can also be installed under the counter. Some freestanding machines may have a removable top cover, which will allow you to remove 2-3 cm in height. If the lid is not removable, you'll have to install it with the lid, but then the countertop height will also need to be higher than standard. It's important to note that this will depend on the appliance model.
We'll provide a few examples of dishwashers from well-known brands in a table for comparison. Analysis revealed that most full-size dishwashers are 60 cm wide, with a few models measuring 59 and 56 cm. There are no dishwashers with a width of 57 or 58 cm. But note that with a width of 60 cm, the height and depth of the unit may vary significantly.

Narrow dishwashers
Narrow dishwashers are those with a width of 45 cm or less, a height of 81 to 85 cm, and a depth of 51 to 65 cm. These dishwashers are popular because they offer an optimal capacity (9-12 place settings) and fit comfortably in small kitchens. However, sometimes even 45 cm proves too large, and people try to find dishwashers with widths of 40, 35, and 30 cm. But don't waste your time searching like that!
Important! Narrow dishwashers with widths of 30, 35, and 40 cm are not commercially available. Their production is not cost-effective or technically feasible.
If you see online stores offering dishwashers with a width of 30, 35, or 40 cm, it's just a marketing ploy. The technical specifications for these machines list the true width as 45 cm. Very rarely, a dishwasher is just over 44 cm wide. 40 cm is too small to accommodate spare parts and baskets for dishes in the car and still make it optimally spacious, and 35 and 30 cm are not even worth mentioning.
Narrow dishwashers with a width of 45 cm also come in:
- built-in;
- free-standing.
Here are some models from various brands. Note the Indesit dishwasher—it's the narrowest we found, while the Hankel model is slightly wider. Also worth considering are the Samsung built-in dishwasher and the Kaiser freestanding narrow dishwasher, as at 45 cm they are very deep, which is uncommon and may not fit a typical kitchen countertop (50–60 cm wide).

Please note: Dishwashers with a width of 46 to 54 cm do not exist, and there are no freestanding or built-in dishwashers with a width of 50 cm.
Compact dishwashers
Let's pay special attention to dishwashers, which are usually classified as compact or small. Judge for yourself how small these dishwashers are, as their width ranges from 54.5 to 60 cm, height from 43.5 to 60 cm, and depth from 49.4 to 60 cm.
The narrowest tabletop dishwasher is the Electrolux ESF 2300 OK, which costs about $300 and has dimensions (WxDxH) of 54.5x51.5x44.7 cm. Most models in this group have a width of 55 cm.Here are some examples of such dishwashers:
- Candy CDCF 6 is a tabletop dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 55 x 50 x 44 cm;
- Indesit ICD 661 is a tabletop dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 55 x 50 x 48 cm;
- Flavia CI 55 HAVANA is a built-in compact dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 55 x 50 x 43.8 cm;
- Hotpoint-Ariston HCD 662 S is a tabletop dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 55 x 52 x 44 cm;
- Korting KDF 2095 N is a tabletop dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 55 x 50 x 44 cm;
- Ginzzu DC281 is a freestanding dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 55 x 50 x 60 cm.
There are compact models with a width of 60 cm, here are some of them:
- Siemens SK 76M544 is a built-in dishwasher, its dimensions (W x D x H) are 60 x 50 x 45.4 cm;
- Bosch SKE 52M55 is a built-in dishwasher, its dimensions (W x D x H) are 60 x 50 x 45 cm;
- NEFF S66M64N3 is a built-in dishwasher, its dimensions (WxDxH) are 60 x 59 x 50 cm.
The only dishwasher model we've encountered with a width of 56 cm is the BELTRATTO LAC 4600. Its height is 46 cm and its depth is 60 cm.
Please note! Dishwashers with widths of 57, 58, and 59 cm do not exist.
Non-standard dishwasher models
Now let's look at what other dishwasher widths are available. We've classified these as non-standard; they're quite rare, but they do exist.
- The Smeg STO905-1 is an Italian dishwasher measuring 86 cm wide, 55 cm deep, and 58 cm high. This dishwasher is fully integrated into cabinetry and holds 12 standard place settings. It resembles a standard full-size dishwasher, but it's turned on its side, which is its unique feature. In terms of technical characteristics, this is an excellent machine: it is silent, has 10 different programs and is fully protected from leaks.It has a half-load function and a delicate program. This model costs around $1,020.
- The Smeg STO905 is another Italian-made dishwasher with similar technical specifications. Like the previous model, it's 86 cm wide. Minor differences make this model less expensive, costing around $850.
- The Smeg BLV2VE-2 is a beautiful freestanding yellow dishwasher, assembled in Italy. This machine is eye-catching not only because of its color but also because of its size. Like most full-size models, it's 60 cm wide, but it's nearly 89 cm high and 67 cm deep. It can wash 13 standard place settings perfectly, using only 8.5 liters of water. Besides being energy-efficient, it's also virtually silent, at 42 dB.
- Kuppersbusch IGVS 6608.3 is a full-size dishwasher assembled in Germany. With a standard width and depth, this machine has a non-standard height of 91 cm. This unit operates quietly and has a variety of programs. However, the price is off-putting, as it costs around $1,740.
Please note: This dishwasher analysis is based on Yandex Market data as of May 2016.
Incidentally, the innovative dishwashers shown in the photo are non-standard. They look neat and compact. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any information about their dimensions; some may be 30 or 40 cm wide. Where they can be purchased is also unknown; perhaps these are display models, not sold or mass-produced. Besides, it's highly doubtful that such appliances would be needed at home.

So, after a detailed analysis of dishwasher sizes, we can conclude that dishwashers with a width of 30, 35, and 40 cm do not exist; dishwashers only come in widths of:
- 44; 44.5 and 45 cm;
- 54.5; 55 and 56 cm;
- 60 and 86 cm.

Thank you for your advice. I only found the answer to my question on your website. I was looking for a dishwasher that was exactly 40 cm wide. They don't exist. We'll look for a solution.
I'm searching online to see if I can remove the lid of my 57cm wide dishwasher to fit it into a 56cm wide kitchen cabinet. I found out on your website that it doesn't exist. I feel like you're a master 😉
