Can you wash curtains with hooks in the washing machine?
Curtains need to be washed to remove dust and allergens, and it's recommended to do this at least once a quarter. If your interior contains expensive materials, it's best to leave them to a dry cleaner. The look of other curtains can be easily updated at home. But can curtains with hooks be machine washed, as removing them is time-consuming? Or will the hooks permanently damage the material?
Preparing curtains for washing
The first step is to prepare the curtains for machine washing. To do this, remove them and remove at least some of the hooks. If they are easily removed, it's best to remove all the fastenings.
Next, dust off the curtains and soak them in a soapy solution. To prepare, dilute one capful of shampoo in 10 liters of lukewarm water. After soaking, you can put the curtains in the washing machine.
Curtains are washed exclusively on a delicate cycle at the lowest temperature.
If you're washing curtains with hooks, be sure to use a special bag. Use only liquid detergents, such as gels or fabric softeners. They won't leave marks or streaks. Residue rinses out easily, keeping the fabric soft.
Tulle curtains
Tulle requires careful handling, so it should only be washed on a delicate setting. Before washing, place curtains with hooks in a special mesh bag. You can buy it in a store, or you can make it yourself from fabric, making sure to include a closure.
How to wash net curtains with curtain clips? Soak the fabric in warm soapy water for about half an hour. Place the net curtains in a laundry bag and place them in the washing machine drum. Select a delicates cycle at a low temperature. After washing, remove the curtains and hang them carefully to dry.
Thread curtains
Machine washing thread curtains requires extreme caution. However, if you follow these instructions, they won't be damaged. Before washing, braid the threads and place them in a mesh bag. Then, soak the curtains, complete with hooks, in a soapy solution for about an hour.
After soaking, you can put the thread curtains in the washing machine. Use only delicate cycles and low temperatures. Do not spin the curtains completely. After washing, hang the curtains carefully to dry, but do not unbraid them immediately.
Airy viscose and silk curtains
Delicate curtain materials also require special care. Due to their special structure, they don't require prolonged soaking. They can be thrown straight into the washing machine, but only if you use a special bag.
Please note: Curtains with decorative elements (rhinestones, beads, etc.) are not machine washable.
Viscose and silk curtains with hooks should be washed on a gentle cycle at low temperatures. Add fabric softener to the fabric's fabric compartment to maintain the airiness and lightness of the material. You can't wring out such curtains, so we turn off the spin cycle completely. After washing, smooth them out gently with your hands and hang them to dry.
Linen curtains
Curtains made of natural linen and cotton are machine washable, but only on a delicates cycle and at a low temperature. Pre-soaking is not required, as the linen is treated with preservatives during production.
Place the curtains with hooks in a laundry bag and place them in the washing machine. Set the cycle to delicates. Do not spin at all or set the cycle to the lowest setting. The temperature should not exceed 30°C (86°F).
Polyester curtains
Synthetic curtains with hooks should also be washed on a delicate cycle, with the spin cycle turned off. Hang them out immediately after washing to drain and dry. Be sure to use detergents designed for synthetics.
Pre-soak the curtains in a soapy solution for half an hour. Then place them in a mesh bag and put them in the washing machine. Use a cycle designed for delicate fabrics. The temperature should not exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). After washing, remove the synthetic curtains, smooth them out by hand, and hang them to drain and dry.
Roman curtains
These curtains require special attention. Be sure to clean them before washing. Remove stains and dust using special products or home remedies. Heavy stains should be wiped with a cotton swab soaked in gasoline, then with formic acid. How do you wash Roman shades?
- Remove the drapes and hooks from the windows.
- Soak the curtains in a warm soapy solution.

- After 1-1.5 hours, remove the material and place it in a laundry bag.
- Place the bag in the washing machine.
- Set the delicate wash cycle to the lowest temperature and low speed.
- When finished, take out the curtains and hang them immediately on the curtain rod.
It's important to hang Roman shades while they're still damp. Use all the hooks provided to do this. Leave them there until they're completely dry.
Pay attention to the hooks
When washing any type of curtain with hooks, pay attention to the material of the fasteners themselves. Some fasteners should never be placed in the washing machine, as they may become damaged. Such fastener materials include clips:
- made of metal;

- metal-plastic;
- chrome plated.
Important! It's better to take the time to remove all metal fasteners than to replace them completely later.
These hooks are very easy to use. They rarely break and ensure a secure hold for curtains. However, they should never be washed, as they are susceptible to corrosion.
Recommendations from professionals
It seems that washing curtains with hooks in a washing machine is very simple. But even if you follow the instructions above completely, you can ruin the fabric. Therefore, experienced housewives recommend:
- select a washing program based on the icons on the manufacturer's label;
- If the material cannot be machine washed, use hand wash only;
- do not use aggressive products to avoid damaging the fabric;
- wash curtains using liquid detergents intended for this type of fabric;
- the volume of curtains placed in the washing machine drum should not exceed half the required load (to prevent the fabric from wrinkling);
- Do not leave washed curtains in the washing machine, hang them up immediately.
A washing machine can be a great help if used correctly. It will effectively remove dust and dirt from your curtains. They will continue to delight you for a long time, provided you follow all the recommendations.
