How long does the rinse cycle last in a washing machine?

How long does the rinse cycle last in a washing machine?Washing machine owners rarely consider that by selecting a program, they initiate a complex technological process involving several steps: washing, rinsing, spinning, and, in some models, drying. Each of these steps affects the program duration and, consequently, water and energy consumption. The cycle that uses the most water is the rinse cycle.

How much time does the machine spend on rinsing?

The rinse cycle in a washing machine lasts, on average, 15 minutes, depending on the appliance model. Korean manufacturers, for example, have made this cycle as short as possible, taking no more than 10 minutes. While this saves resources, it also impacts the washing quality: LG and Samsung washing machines often contain detergent residue. Selecting the right program can help prevent this.Rinse duration on a Samsung washing machine

German washing machines offer the highest-quality rinse cycles. They take at least 13 minutes to remove detergent from laundry. However, this high-quality wash comes at the cost of increased water consumption. Also, the "Germans" always have an extra rinse function, thanks to which things get rid of even the smallest particles of powder.

Many modern washing machines feature this option. If a homeowner notices that the laundry isn't being cleaned thoroughly enough, they can run an additional rinse cycle, and in future, they can activate the desired function when selecting a wash program.

Why can cycle times vary?

Although the timing of all wash cycle components is preset by the manufacturer, it can sometimes vary even within the same cycle. This depends on the additional options selected along with the care program.

  1. Wash temperature. The higher the temperature, the longer it takes to heat the water, and the longer the cycle itself will last. For example, washing clothes in hot water will take a quarter of an hour longer than washing them in a delicate cycle at 30-40 degrees Celsius. The longest mode is the boiling mode.
  2. Pre-soak. This feature is used for heavily soiled items or laundry with dried-in, "old" stains. Any cycle with this option will extend the wash cycle by 15 minutes.
  3. Spin. The higher the spin speed, the drier your laundry gets, but the longer the washing machine runs. For example, spinning at 1200 rpm will take 4-5 minutes longer than at 400 rpm for delicates.Spinning on the panel of a German machine
  4. Intelligent mode. Available in more expensive models, it allows the appliance to automatically select a wash cycle based on the drum load, fabric type, and soiling of the items. This mode improves wash quality, but also significantly increases the machine's runtime.

The operating time of a household appliance is affected not only by its modes and additional features, but also by the condition of the unit. For example, limescale deposits that form on the heating element during washing machine operation increase the time it takes to heat the water to the desired temperature, thereby extending its operating time. Remarkably, this does not occur when selecting low temperature settings.

How long do washing programs last?

Regardless of washing machine model and manufacturer, the wash cycle times are generally the same, with minor differences. Standard programs include:

  • quick wash – an express mode used for lightly soiled items (also called “daily wash”) and lasting on average from 14 to 35 minutes;Quick 30 program settings
  • shoes – it will take about 40 minutes to clean sneakers and trainers;
  • delicate mode – takes about 50 minutes and is used for items made from thin, delicate fabrics that require low temperatures and reduced spin speeds;
  • synthetics – one of the types of delicate washing, but using higher temperatures and lasting about 1.5 hours;
  • Cotton – the longest cycle, taking about two hours, is intended for natural, dense fabrics;
  • Intensive mode – necessary for very dirty items, usually includes a pre-wash or soak option, which extends the appliance’s operation up to four hours.

Modern washing machines also feature a number of special programs. A program for large items allows you to clean blankets, comforters, and outerwear at home, while a "children's program" ensures the washing quality of clothes for the littlest members of the family is maintained. Large items take an average of 1.5 hours to wash, while children's items take 2-2.5 hours, as they undergo an additional rinse.
