How to remove the lock on an Indesit washing machine?

How to remove the lock on an Indesit washing machineRemoving the door lock on an Indesit washing machine doesn't require any special tools or years of experience. Anyone can do it; all you need is a screwdriver and an Allen key. If you follow the instructions, the job can be completed in just 10-15 minutes. We'll explain the process in more detail.

Removing the UBL

You won't have to spend much time getting ready to work. All you need is a screwdriver and a hex key to the machine—you'll need these tools to remove the fasteners. Be sure to de-energize the equipment, disconnect the machine from the water supply and sewerage system, and move it away from the wall. This will allow free access to the rear panel of the case. The next steps are as follows:

  • unscrew a couple of bolts securing the housing cover;
  • remove the top panel by pushing it forward slightly and lifting it up (this will release the latches and the cover will give way);remove the Indesit CM housing cover
  • tilt the machine back slightly and slide your hand down the front wall;
  • feel the connector with the UBL wires (if you can’t find the part, use a flashlight);
  • Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the locking device (it is better to hold the lock on the other side with your free hand so that it does not fall);unscrew and remove the door lock
  • Pull the released lock out through the top of the washer.

You can get to the UBL on Indesits either through the top of the car or through the front wall by removing the hatch cuff.

If the first method fails to remove the locking device, you can try a different approach. To do this:

  • open the machine door wide;
  • remove the outer clamp securing the hatch cuff;
  • tuck the sealing rubber inside the drum;removing the UBL from under the cuff
  • unscrew the door;
  • remove the locking mechanism together with the UBL.

A novice is better off trying to access the locking device through the top of the washing machine. This way, you won't have to touch the seal. Replacing the rubber seal isn't easy; an inexperienced user can easily damage the machine's seal by making a mistake, leading to leaks.

Let's test the lock correctly

Before rushing to the store for a new locking device, be sure to test the old one. It may still be working properly and won't need replacing. Find the locking device's circuit diagram in the washing machine's manual. To test the locking device, you'll need a multimeter.testing the UBL with a multimeter

The tester is turned on and set to resistance measurement mode. Then, place one multimeter probe on the neutral terminal and the other on the live terminal of the locking device. Next, evaluate the readings displayed on the display. A three-digit number indicates the locking device is functioning properly. Any other readings indicate a malfunction.

The hatch locking device cannot be repaired; you will have to buy and install a new lock.

Finding a similar replacement part is very easy. Locks are sold in specialty stores and are inexpensive. When choosing components, be sure to provide the seller with the machine's serial number and model name.

Why does the lock break?

In some cases, users may notice that the Indesit washing machine door only closes halfway. Only the mechanical latch engages, but the door doesn't lock. In this situation, there's clearly a problem with the door lock system. This means the control module isn't receiving a signal that the system is sealed, so the "brain" doesn't initiate the wash cycle.

This type of malfunction typically causes a flashing indicator on the washing machine's control panel. Modern models with self-diagnostic systems display an error code corresponding to the problem.

What is the purpose of an electronic latch? It's necessary to prevent the door from swinging open accidentally. Due to the locking device, the hatch cannot be opened even if force is applied. This prevents leaks. If the locking device is broken, the machine will not start the cycle. Various factors can cause this malfunction. Let's look at them.Why does the UBL break?

  • Simple wear and tear. If the machine has been in use for several years, the bimetallic plates of the locking mechanism wear out. This disrupts the electrical conductivity of the part and the operation of the mechanism as a whole. Repairs won't help in this situation; the locking mechanism will have to be replaced.
  • Clogged. Sometimes the blocking device's connector simply becomes clogged with dust and other debris. In this case, cleaning the element will help restore its functionality.
  • Problems with the control module. Sometimes the problem isn't with the door lock itself, but with the electronic unit that receives the signals. If the circuit board tracks burn out or the triacs fail, the "brain" can't properly control the washing machine. As a result, the machine doesn't lock the door.

If the problem is with the lock, anyone can fix the machine. Simply remove the device following the instructions, clean it, or replace it with a new one. If the problem is with the control module, we don't recommend attempting repairs yourself. Messing with the electronics without sufficient knowledge and experience can only make the situation worse. It's best to leave diagnostics of the main unit to specialists.
