Removing the top cover of the washing machine

How to remove the lid of a washing machineRemoving the top cover of a washing machine can be challenging, but only for those who've never done it before. In reality, it's a very simple task and doesn't require any special strength or skills.

Typically, the need to remove the top of this type of appliance arises when something breaks. If your washing machine breaks, you first need to determine the cause of the problem. This requires disassembling the machine. In some cases, you can simply remove the top. In others, you have to disassemble almost the entire machine. And quite often, disassembling a washing machine begins with the top.

Is your washing machine broken?

So, if your washing machine breaks down, you have two options:

  1. Call a professional. This is the easiest option. You won't need to understand the washing machine, diagnose and fix the problem, or reassemble or disassemble your appliance. The only downside to this option is that you'll have to spend more money. On the plus side, calling a professional means you don't risk the continued functionality of your machine. And all work and parts replaced by the technician are usually guaranteed.
  2. You can find and fix the problem yourself. The downside: no matter how you look at it, there's still a risk for a beginner. Without the proper skills and understanding of what to do, you could damage the machine. Therefore, if you decide to repair it yourself, be careful. The upside is saving money. You won't have to pay for a repairman, but you'll still have to fork out for a new part (if the old one is completely broken).

Remove the lid

How to remove the lid of a washing machineRemoving the washing machine cover is necessary to disassemble the machine. Without removing the top part of the machine, you won't be able to access many of its internal components.

To remove the cover of the washing machine we need an ordinary Phillips screwdriver. The lid is secured with two bolts on the back of the machine. Therefore, if your machine is too close to the wall and you can't find or reach the bolts with a screwdriver, you'll need to slide it forward.

Don't forget to unplug the machine. Then pull it out and unscrew the bolts. Next, you need to slide the top part of the housing back. To do this, you can push it. It will disengage from the retaining grooves. Then you can simply remove it and put it away, out of the way of accessing the internal components.

The cover is put back on in exactly the same way. First, push the front part of the cover into the grooves by pushing the back part of the cover forward. Then, tighten it with two bolts.

It's worth mentioning that there are many different washing machine models. Some may have different lid mounting methods. Here, we've covered the most common mounting method, which is found on most front-loading machines.
