Finish Dishwasher Salt
There are a wide variety of dishwasher detergents and dishwasher care products. One of the most widely advertised brands is Finish. Many dishwasher manufacturers (Bosch, AEG, Candy, Indesit, Electrolux, and others) recommend this brand, placing the Finish logo on their dishwashers. In this article, we'll discuss one of their products—salt—and answer questions about its purpose, its different types, how to use it, and what users say about it.
Description and purpose of salt
Finish brand salt is designed for use in dishwashers to soften water and prevent scale buildup on internal components. This will not only extend the life of the appliance but also improve dishwashing performance. As we know, soft water not only cleans dishes better, but also helps them stay clean. Salt itself does not soften water; it works in conjunction with the ion exchange resin built into the machine.
If you don't use the dishwasher salt for a long time, the ion exchanger may simply fail, preventing the entire machine from working properly. Therefore, when the salt indicator lights up on the control panel, be sure to add salt to the salt compartment, especially if your water is very hard. The harder the water in your area, the more salt you'll need.
Important! Some people replace salt with salt tablets, but if you have very hard water, this shouldn't be done. You should also add salt along with the tablets to maintain the ion exchanger's function.
The manufacturer of Finish salt claims the following functions of the salt:
- improving the performance of the dishwasher;
- water softening and scale prevention;
- removing water stains and plaque from dried dishes.
Finish salt contains sodium chloride. Some might say it's just regular table salt, sold under a well-promoted name. Yes, table salt does contain sodium chloride, but Finish dishwasher salt undergoes the best processing, so it does not contain technical impurities, such as carbonic acid salts, iron impurities, sand grains, etc. In addition, special salt has larger granules that dissolve more slowly and evenly in water.
Types of salt
Finish specialty salt doesn't have any specific varieties, and what kind could there be if it consists of only one component? However, users encounter different boxes and names on store shelves. While dishwasher salt is packaged in different ways, its composition and properties remain the same. You can find Finish specialty salt and Finish Calgonit salt.

Salt is available in 1.2 kg, 1.5 kg, and 4 kg packages. Products under this brand are manufactured in various countries. Specifically, salt is produced in Russia, Germany, and Poland. Russian-produced salt is offered on the domestic market. This salt is packaged with Russian language labels and comes in 1.5 kg packages. Special salt produced in Germany is usually packaged in 1.2 kg and 4 kg packages; there is no Russian text on the packages of this salt.
The price of salt from a European manufacturer will naturally be higher, but it is also very difficult to obtain.
As for the quality of the salt, this can only be determined after trying salt from different manufacturers. We asked dishwasher users what they thought of Finish salt.

I use Calgonit Finish salt. Washing with salt gives dishes a shine and prevents residue. A one and a half kilogram pack fits completely into the salt compartment and is enough for approximately 3-4 months. When the indicator light on the dishwasher panel comes on, I add more salt. This is the perfect salt for me; I don't want to use anything else.

I can say that Finish salt is a good option. The first time I used half a pack, it lasted me almost two months. When the indicator light comes on, I add more salt. But sometimes the indicator light comes on while there's still salt in the compartment. In that case, I just stir the salt, and then the indicator light goes out. This salt, in my opinion, is very expensive. There are cheaper alternatives, so I'll be looking for the best option in terms of price and quality.

I expected more from such highly-hyped salt, which is why I bought it, thinking it was expensive, meaning it was high-quality. As instructed, I poured the salt into the compartment, but the indicator light on the control panel kept flashing. At first, I thought the salt hadn't dissolved well and wasn't at the right concentration. But the packet of salt was running low, and the indicator light kept flashing. The salt itself seemed a bit coarse to me; in short, I didn't like it. I'll look for something else.

I occasionally buy 3-in-1 tablets for my dishwasher, which the manufacturers claim don't require salt. So I stopped adding salt to the dishwasher tray. But after a few washes, I noticed streaks and residue on my glass plates and glasses. It wasn't immediately clear why. But when I added more salt, the residue disappeared. So, my money-saving experiment failed. Now I'll go back to Finish salt, which I've been using for years; I'm happy with both the price and the cleaning performance. It lasts a long time, too.
So, whether to buy or not to buy dishwasher salt, decide for yourself. You can even replace salt analog, but just remember that in the event of a breakdown, the warranty on the car will not cover the use of non-special salt. The repair of the car will be carried out only at your expense. As for Finish salt, there are both those who support and those who don't. Try it yourself and then decide whether it's right for you.
