Salt filter in a washing machine
Everyone knows that the water supplied to our apartments is rich in various impurities, which make it hard. These elements cause limescale, scale, and rust, which can cause discomfort and even damage washing machines. However, there is a solution: a salt filter for your washing machine. We'll explain what it is in this article.
What does the filter look like and work?
A salt filter is designed to prevent chemical reactions in water that lead to the formation of harmful deposits. How does it work? The device itself resembles a transparent flask filled with crystals and sealed with a knob-like lid.
- The crystals inside are polyphosphates. They combine with water and "paralyze" the calcium and magnesium molecules that form salts. Consequently, the substances do not react with other impurities and do not contribute to the formation of deposits and sediments.
- The flask is made transparent so that the polyphosphate level can be observed. They gradually dissolve in the water and decrease in quantity. As a rule, one bookmark is enough for 365 washes.
- The lid is equipped with two holes to which water pipes are connected.
Sometimes people prefer to install several filters at once, but a salt filter is quite sufficient, as scale and limescale are the main problems. If you're still unsure, you can try installing a filter that removes coarse and fine sand from the water.
Caution! When refilling the polyphosphate filter, turn off the water supply to the unit and unplug it from the power source to avoid accidents.
Filter installation
Before installing the filter, turn off the water supply to your apartment, as the device is attached to a branch of the water pipe responsible for filling the machine with water. To install the filter:
- Disconnect the inlet hose through which water enters the machine;
- attach the filter to the pipe; the threads of the device usually match the threads on the pipes, so this shouldn’t be a problem;
- then connect the hose to the filter so that the device is between the pipe and the hose.
That's it! This procedure is easy for anyone to perform, without any special training.
Which filter should I buy?
Among the many salt filters manufactured by a huge number of companies, there are a few favorites that completely satisfy users with their characteristics and price-quality ratio. Here they are.
- Geyser 1 PF. This $2.50 filter is designed to purify water not only in washing machines but also in dishwashers and boilers. If you want to purify water in several devices at once, the filter should be installed on the pipe supplying water to the apartment, not on a separate unit.
- Aquafon Styron. This part is from a domestic manufacturer. Its price is slightly higher - $3, since the filter completely replaces any powdered anti-scale agents. It can also be used for washing machines and dishwashers, but is installed between the hose and the device.
- WFST BEST-2 Dosing Filter. This device can remove hard salts from up to 20,000 liters of water. It is manufactured in Poland and holds approximately 100 grams. This filter is installed between the water supply hose and the faucet and primarily protects the heating elements.
- Atmor ATP. This Israeli filter costs about $3 and is the most popular among users. It is distinguished by its high quality and durable materials. It is also very easy to use.
It's up to you to decide whether a salt filter is right for you, but it won't make things worse. The water will be softer, so your laundry won't be damaged as much, and limescale, rust, and other odor-causing contaminants will no longer accumulate on your machine's components. We're guessing that's not something everyone wants.
